A People in Exile (Part 1)
Second Isaiah, so called because his book of prophecy was affixed to Isaiah's, had the ability to interpret events in the light of the fundamental conviction that God was the supreme director of all movements of history. He spent most of his life proclaiming to his people, their deliverance and restoration. It was all so certain to this prophet that he saw it already accomplished. The power of religion has seldom been more beautifully expressed. The prophet's own experience; his own enthusiasm, his own optimism shines through his words as clearly as sunlight shines through a window. The portrait presented to us in Isaiah by this nameless prophet of God depicts a troubled people in a troubled land. Awake, awake, O Zion, clothe yourself with strength. Put on your garments of splendor, O Jerusalem, the holy city. The uncircumcised and defiled will not enter you again. Shake off your dust; rise up, sit enthroned, O Jerusalem. Free yourself from the chains on your neck, O captive Daughter of Zion. Isaiah 52:1-2 (NIV). The Israelites were struggle weary, hopeless, a haggard group of people who were dried out from suffering. In the great Babylonian civilization they constantly felt the tremendous power of the Chaldean Empire. Its mighty armies, gigantic buildings and great material wealth had crushed all hope out of their hearts. This poor lifeless despondent group of Jewish slaves succumbed to the idea that Babylon was far too mighty, far too powerful to be overthrown. They were a troubled people in a troubled land. I ruminated over the fact that there are so many today who feel exactly the way the Israelites felt. A mood of disillusion has take possession of our lives. The dark cloud of apprehension and fear hangs over us. A sense of futility has somehow overlaid our hopes and taken captive our faith. Instead of us determining our own course, forces beyond our control seem to determine it for us. Many, many folks today feel powerless and frustrated. Many have not only lost their sense of internal reference, but they have also lost their sense of direction. Washington, the seat of government, cannot ease our mental stress because we realize that even after Watergate, Camp David, peace talks, arms limitations, treaties and new presidents; the situation in this world is still grave. While some of us are dying from overeating, people all around the world die daily of starvation. The sharp sword of nuclear holocaust dangles impatiently over our heads. There is weather upset, fuel crisis, mindless crime, political corruption at all levels. And, as if this wasn't enough, our own personal and individual problems appear to be mounting. Some folks because of the price hard times entail and some, caught up in the conflict of these times are being torn asunder. Life is restless. It's untamed and moody and perilous. Life does not flatter you. It offers you toil and labor. It has in its bosom every possible danger in many modes of death: famine, fire, shipwreck, earthquake, hurricanes, plane crashes, cold, snow storms, and tornadoes. We are born, no reason given. We just suddenly become aware one day that we are man or woman, an African pigmy, an Egyptian Pharaoh, a Chinese coolie, Abraham Lincoln or Jeffrey Dalmer. We are ushered into the Stone Age or Dark Age or Age of Technology. We inherit according to birth; belief in voodoo, Christianity, atheism or Judaism. We are born into this world to live and yet many die in infancy. Others, due to some unfortunate twist in fate, die in middle life and others live to a ripe old age. And then we ask ourselves upon what principles are we allotted our looks. What is it that makes us ugly or attractive or "plain?" What is it that gives us a musical ear or an artistic eye; an affectionate disposition or an uncontrollable temper, a talent for mathematics or skills of language? What about these frames in which we live with their tiresome demands and endless complaints. Our bodies do as they please with us. They become coronary prone, diabetic, emphysemic, burdened down with cancer. They mar our best intentions. They reinforce that which is low in us and keep our bodies in need of constant repair. When you consider nature as our mother, she certainly is not the best of teachers. (continued in Part 2) Rev. Saundra L. The Psychical Research Foundation Karen was the name of the reception person, who sat behind the desk one Saturday morning around noon when I dropped in. I had never heard about them and was actually planning to find the J.B. Rhine Institute or the Federation for Research on the Nature of Man (FRNM). I had stumbled in to the 'mother lode'. It wasn't necessary to come to these places to look for their literature or research. I could have found more than enough of that at the Association for Research and Enlightenment library in Va. Beach. I wanted to experience these things first hand. A Life That Is Purpose Driven I started reading the book "The Purpose Driven Life" about 45 days ago. This book is written by Rick Warren. It is one of the best books I have ever read and It has changed my life. It is a really good book and I am out there trying to get people to read it and acknowledge the difference it makes in your life. I had been waiting to read it since it first came out but I kept putting it off. It took my approximately 40 days to complete it and that is because he ( Rick Warren) wants you to sign a covenant with him stating that you will take that time to realize your life and path that God has chosen for you. I made the promise and the commitment and I took it to heart. I missed one day in reading that book and the very next day I read two chapters to make up for it. It does take you, going by his directions, approximately 40 days to complete. I started it around the time I wrote the article 40 days and 40 nights. 40 being represented in the bible and a significant number that God has used. I took the time to read this book every morning when I awoke, one chapter a day until I completed it. It has a lot of spiritual information and a lot of information period. I really loved it and I suggest everyone read it. I don't want to part with my book but I plan to buy at least three more for friends and family and have them pass it on. It is encouraging and enlightening. There are many things one will learn by reading what he has written and I feel it was totally God inspired. Just Learning To Cope I have been thinking about this all night. I am realizing that there are more and more people dealing with anxiety. I have my opinions in regards to anxiety and I have written my own story in dealing with that. I am thinking of starting a support network for individuals and families dealing with this. Anxiety is debilitating. Anxiety begins with a fear that ends up an obsession. I personally think that anxiety is the result of feeling out of control. You are at a point where your life and world has now become out of control. It is to much for a person to handle and that is where your fear begins. I am no doctor but I know from experience if you have not experienced this you will never understand and you could not possibly. That is why I would like to start a support network. If you are dealing with it you need to be able to access someone who has dealt with it and know YOU ARE NOT ALONE, and I do believe this to be the biggest relief. Anxiety can be a result of feeling alone, a fear that becomes an obsession. I think everyone who has been through this will understand that simple sentence. I am going to give you some examples of anxiety and hopefully some tips. Where Are You, God? Do you ever have one of those days when you wonder if God is really there? Does he really exist? If he does, then why can't you see Him or even sense His presence? Why do you feel so desolate, so alone? I was in that place a few days ago. The 5 Elemental Codes: Seeing Your World Through the Eyes of Universal Understanding (Part 1) This article is the 1st part of an open response to a question that I encountered online a few years ago in one of the many Martial Arts Ninjutsu forums. The question (paraphrased) was: Thank You Lord, Most Graciously There are moments in the believer's life when the Spirit of the living God gets in us and gives birth to thanksgiving and holy reflection. Moments when we really comprehend how good God is and how good He has been. Not only how good He has been in general, but how good He has been to us particularly. We reflect upon how He stepped into our own situation, how when nothing else could help, His love lifted us. We ponder how in those times when we were down and could not hear anybody pray, He spoke to our hearts and lifted our burdens. No Star-Studded Career What is success? It probably means different things to different people. One person said, "Success is the ability to fulfill your desires with effortless ease." Another person said, "Success is an outcome and a state of mind and being and a matter of choice." And still another concluded, "Success is your belief that you will achieve anything you desire." There seem to be a consensus that accepts the definition of success as, "The achievement of something desired, planned, or attempted." Traveling Out Of Body I can see the cops coming! They're a good thousand feet away. I can clearly make out their uniforms and swinging nightsticks. How can I be seeing this? A Beautiful Mind is a Simple Mind!! In the movie "A Beautiful Mind" John Nash (played by Russell Crowe) is a schizophrenic math genius who struggles with is inability to have peace of mind. In one scene he bangs his head on the window until it bleeds, begging his mind to slow down, all the while having a conversation with his imaginary roommate, Charles. A Scary Thought For Some... What could be a scary thought for some? How bout' this--The thought that as a Christian you can do whatever you want......scary? Simple It was my intention to explain the word "simple," and by the time I put the thoughts into words it became more difficult. I am sometimes at odds with others when I say that something is simple, and I must remind them that I did not say easy, there is a big distinction between the two terms. Why Worry The possibility of almost 400 Old Testament prophesies coming to fulfillment in the incarnation of Jesus Christ, apart from God's sovereign control of history, staggers the imagination. The certainty that God planned the coming of His son into the world can offer stabilizing support to our faith in our Lord. Elvis Left the Building and Moved in with Me! Years ago no matter where I lived, whether a house was new or not, I'd experience doors opening and closing by themselves, items disappearing only to be found later in the strangest places, seeing people others didn't and being touched by unseen hands. Not only was this unnerving; it was also really frustrating! Each time I moved I'd think "Here we go again! What surprises are in store for me this time?" Are you Bringing Light or Discord? We are living in highly challenged times. Our mass consciousness directly reflects the discord in which many of us find ourselves within our own personal lives. Why There Are Four Gospels The first gospel written by Matthew, who is Levi, is the first archtype of Christ in you as the fulness of the Godhead. Write Your Own Magic Recently, I received a postcard from Ireland. Without reading the message, I knew who had sent it. Several months earlier, I had met a charming woman named Jessica. We discussed the poetry of William Butler Yeats, and Jessica expressed a strong desire to visit the Lake Isle of Innisfree, and other places in Ireland that Yeats had loved. The Traitor Within Life is like an obstacle course in which we run like an Olympian athlete and at times getting nowhere. We exert a lot of energy trying to avoid life's ditches, jump over the potholes, leap across stumbling blocks, miss the dangers, and somehow sidestep the troubles. Of course, we could significantly improve our quality of life if we took the time to seriously think through our responses to situations. A load of troubles can be alleviated by a little forethought, a little preparation, and a little contrivance. The Who Am I Koan When we ask ourselves the question who am I in earnest, we have this expectation that we can answer the question. True Justice and Freedom The world's idea of justice and freedom fall short of their purpose. Prison bars keep the guilty from repeating their crime while behind them. They cannot change the person. Freedom comes with a price. We have to take responsibility for our actions. We are never free from the tensions of living on the earth. We must pay the price of making a living and existing among people of different temperaments and cultures. Being in Christ is the perfect answer because he has already paid the price for our sins. DREAMS, Does God Still Use Them Today? The bible has many accounts throughout time that He used dreams as a form of communication to His people. A few examples are Daniel, Joseph (old testament), Joseph (Mary's husband) and many others. |
