How Much Better Can You Have It?
"If you don't like something, change it. If you can't change it, change your attitude. Don't complain."-Maya Angelou How Much Better Can You Have It? I have a long time friend that truly believes that bad things happen only to her. Instead of taking responsibility for the choices she has made in her life, she believes that she is a victim of circumstances, other people's treatment or just bad luck. Each email I receive from her is a continuing saga of one bad thing after another occurring. I noticed over the last few months that the frequency and the severity of these events are increasing. I have also noticed that there is a direct correlation between the number of things she complains about and the number of "bad things" that happen to her. In listening to my friend, I have become more mindful of things I complain about. Last week I was called for jury duty and was selected to be on a jury. It was the 5th time I have been called, and the 4th time I had to actually serve. Of the group of people that were assigned to the court room along with me, I was the only one that had actually served on a jury. While we were going through the jury selection process, I was 'complaining' to the others about having to serve so often and wishing that I would not be picked again. Only 6 jurors were selected out of 20, and I was the last one picked at the end of the day. On my way home that night, it struck me that my complaining had something to do with my selection! What one focuses on, is what one attracts and I had focused on what I did not want -being selected for jury duty. Do you know someone that is a constant complainer? What does their life look like? What are they attracting with their complaints? Do they seem to always have something go wrong? Complainers believe that someone else is at the steering wheel of their lives, and they are just along for the ride. Here's a statement I heard this week from T. Harv Eker, author of The Millionaire Mind: "Complaining is the worse possible thing you can do for your health and your wealth." The truth of this statement really struck me, and the question I asked myself was, what would my life be like if I stopped complaining? Even though I make a point of expressing what I am grateful for each day, I do slip in a complaint or two! As terrific as my life is, the question is how much better could I have it? Take a look at your own life. How often you do complain about something or someone? What would happen if you stopped complaining? Is there any downside? How good could you have it? Take the challenge and find out! Here are some actions you can take: -Pay attention to the number of times you complain about something each day. -Pick 2 days and commit to no complaints for that time period. See how you feel and what happens at the end of the 2 days. -Incorporate this new practice into your life on an on-going basis! Your Thoughts Are Powerful The only thing between you and your desire to be successful and wealthy is one single fact: You are not successful or wealthy because of how you think. This little known fact keeps many from reaching their goals of success and wealth. Seeing Through Fear "I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. But the challenges themselves aren't holding you back; rather, it's how you react to the challenges that determine your ultimate success and happiness. My Attitudes "If you don't enjoy getting up and working and finishing your work and sitting down to a meal with family or friends, then the chances are you're not going to be happy. If someone bases his or her happiness or unhappiness on major events like a great new job, huge amounts of money, a flawlessly happy marriage or a trip to Paris, that person isn't going to be happy much of the time. If, on the other hand, happiness depends on a good breakfast, flowers in the yard, a drink or a nap, then we are more likely to live with quite a bit of happiness." ~~Andy Rooney Oh for a Really Good Day! What's wrong with me? When I'm sick I get grumpy and irritable. When I'm criticised I become defensive. When people interrupt me I become impatient. I get angry at injustice. Waiting in lines, and bureaucratic runarounds make me feel I'm wasting my life. When Things Go Wrong As They Sometimes Will... Dont Get Your Knickers In A Twist! In frustration it's easy to jump to false conclusions that life is out to get you. Wrong assumptions will invariably lead you to wrong conclusions. And, it is ridiculous to think that our limited experiences are reflective of life in general. When the struggles begin, it's time for a reality check. Are You A Victim Of FABS? Part One Have you heard of the FABS? The FABS are quadruplets; they are not identical but they are very, very similar! The FABS are: Fear, Anger, Blame and Shame. This quartet love to arrive, uninvited, at people's houses and literally stay forever. They will certainly stay as long as you allow them to; they never seem to get tired of hanging around and causing troubles for the unsuspecting host. Start Your Day on Your Terms Most of us start the day like we're trying to catch a train. We wake up, grab a cup of coffee, look at the paper and listen to the news. We rush out of the house to make an appointment or deadline or to put the finishing touches on a project. From deadline to appointment it goes. When we leave work we have other responsibilities and obligations, and it doesn't end until we go to sleep, and for some it still doesn't end. We never do catch the train. We forgot one essential thing. We are the conductor and the train can't go anywhere without us. Lose Your Hope And You Can Bring Down The Curtain! The others in the raft didn't seem to share Eddie's state of mind. His companions clearly began to think about what lay beyond death; And, to think about it in terms of their own lives. Eddie said, "at no time did I ever lose hope that we would be saved." Instead, Eddie tried to impart something to his comrades that would help them and be of great value to them. What was it? Believe It Or Not I am often astounded at what and why people believe what they do. I am sure that you too have noticed that some people believe in the oddest things. How to Change Any Belief I have studied the idea of changing thoughts to create a new reality for some years. There are many books on the subject. They talk of visualisation, affirmations, positive thinking, overcoming the past, transcending your beliefs, prayer, meditation, use of structural tension or creating intention to change. I have used all of these techniques to change beliefs with varying degrees of success. Some beliefs seem quite easy to change, while others require a lot more work. Our Beliefs Define Our Limits The universe is vast, it's dimensions inconceivable, it's potentialities unimaginable, and we know too that our own consciousness has depths to it that are virtually infinite, and yet despite this enormity within and without, we choose to confine ourselves to beliefs in scarce resources. I Know I Can, I Know I Can I'm sure most of you remember the children's book about The Little Train That Could. I have to admit that at my age, I don't remember the exact title or exactly how the story goes, but I don't recall the idea in the story. Lets Get to the Bottom of Low Self-Esteem If you suffer from low self-esteem, it's because you don't know yourself well enough to appreciate how basically wonderful you are. This is not empty flattery. It is true. Taking Responsibility for Yourself This week I happened to catch a few minutes of a popular talk show on television, and the topic was confessions. A young man was confessing to his girlfriend of 5 years that he had cheated on her with her best friend. Not too unusual these days I guess. But what he said next floored me. "It was an accident. One thing led to another and before I knew it, we were having sex."
