Uncommon Common Sense ? Know What is the Most Important Thing in Your Business
Over 3 of my meetings with 3 business owners last week, what really shocked me was how uncommon common sense was. 2 out of 3 I spoke to do not know what is the most important thing in their business. They keep on trying on other things that are not important. As we know, every business has ONE most important thing in their particular industry. You need to do well in your most important thing and the rest will take care of itself. For Manufacturing: Most important is your quality consistency and how low is your unit cost. It doesn't matter if you have a proprietary technology but if you can't produce the goods in a consistent manner, nobody will buy it. Look at the failed air purifier industry and you'll know what I mean. For Trading: As you are a pure middle man (like CAO), you need to be cash rich or have access to cash at very low funding cost. This will allow you to buy goods in bulk at substantially lower price than the rest. It' doesn't matter what goods you sell, high or low tech. As a trader, you make money from buying and selling, nothing else. Not putting your faith in the latest high tech products, you must sell what moves or you will be moved out of the industry. For Retail: (service or goods, including food & beverage): Most important is location, location, location. Next is engagement with the customers, for retail is an experience, and it can only be experienced through passionate retail service staff. If your retail staff is not passionate about their work, change their passion or change them! If your location is good and the rental is high, capitalize on it by getting your customers to buy at higher dollar value, or do more 'pay first and collect goods now' business. Like one Chinese dim sum restaurant in Tanjong Pagar (one of the busies town with expensive rental in Singapore) did, they added one take-away counter outside their restaurant and see their sales increased by 27%. For Professional Service, including IT: How many good people do you have? Since highly skilled people are also highly paid, are they loyal to your firm or are they just loyal to their salary? It doesn't matter what service you are providing, from legal to advertising or web-services. You need to get the really good skilled people that will not leave, like what the Big Four Audit firms do in grooming their high flyers into partners. For Start-ups: Sorry, most start-ups haven't found a good business yet, so whatever you are doing, you just need to be persistent and you'll find your way there. For Stockiest: The good days of bulk buys and offering bulk discounts are over: with Internet anyone can buy anything. Stockiest need to have a few products that nobody has, and the best way is to have your own brand and OEM it out. If you want to know about how to build your brand, follow the "Osim" model. For Management: You need to have access to management tools, systems and manuals. Anyone can learn about leadership but all leaders need to have management tools or they will just be a leader without achieving anything. And most importantly, is to use the tools properly. Don't be like what CAO did; they have the best tools but nobody use them! For Employees: The most important thing is to help to solve your boss' problems and your career will fly. What can you do today to make your employer happy? For Everyone: It's all about DOING! NOT THEORY or 'should' or 'could'. For only when you do will you know if your theory is right or wrong. And the more you do , the less risk you have because you will be learning fast. Gordon Goh is author of the free, informative website Simply Motivation offering quality useful tips for Motivation

Innovation Management: The Quality and Quantity of the Idea Pool Creativity can be defined as problem identification and idea generation whilst innovation can be defined as idea selection, development and commercialisation. Is Your Business Ethical? Ethics - in a profession or trade - is that branch of philosophy which studies the principles of right and wrong in human conduct. Train Me -- But Follow Through My mechanic has me trained. When I take my car in for an oil change, he places a sticker in the upper left hand corner of my windshield to remind me what date and mileage I should have my next maintenance completed. But every once in a while, he forgets to put the sticker on the window. Then I have to remember the date and mileage details. Business Relationship Germs In management seminars I often compare debt to an infection. A reasonable amount of debt will not kill a business, but too much debt will. While most businesses carry a substantial amount of debt from time to time, it must be maintained in an acceptable relationship to stockholder's equity. Why Outsourcing Could Be The Best Thing You Do For Your Business While it's probably not true to say that the traditional 9-5 job is on its way out, it IS true that more and more businesses these days are starting to see the value of outsourcing the jobs they can't cover themselves. Things like copywriting, PR, programming ? even secretarial and admin support - are being outsourced to freelancers working from home or running their own business. But why? The Importance of Business Goals For you to get where you want to go, there are four key steps for you to take. They are not difficult, but they are vital. Know Your Client - The First Rule of Business Coaching Whilst the very best coaches have undertaken independently accredited training and or have years of experience with clients, new self-assessment questionnaires are coming available which is evolving coaching into a far more focused activity. And that is to the benefit of coach/client relationships for the following reasons:- Its All In The Systems Have you ever noticed french fries taste the same at every McDonald's? The same can be said for Subway and its Italian BMT. How do these fast food icons replicate themselves at nearly 40,000 locations when some eateries struggle to get it right in a single restaurant? The answer is simple: it's all in the systems. Creating a Team Working Environment TEAM DECISION MAKING: Managers who invite participation believe that people directly affected by a decision should be involved in making that decision. The effort is toward joint, cooperative decision making. The aim is to give employees a chance to have a say about things that affect them. This means giving them more control over their own work and giving up some of your own power and control. Necessary Tasks You May Want to Delegate As a business owner, time is of the essence. Running a business is demanding. You are either performing the day-to-day administrative work or you're working in your business, attending to your customers or clients. What is the best use of your time? The answer is simple. Your time should be spent doing what you do best. The day-to-day administrative tasks can be delegated. It's so much easier to review work than to do it yourself! Here are some suggestions to get you started. Is Your Employee Newsletter Management Propaganda? It should not be. If it is an effective newsletter, it will serve the needs of readers (employees) as much as it serves the needs of the publisher (management). Two Critical Success Factors in an ITIL Implementation Any IT manager who wants to pursue the IT Service Management journey by implementing the Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) needs to understand two very important factors well in advance. Managing YOUR Expectations I sit on the board of an organization and at the last meeting found myself speaking with another board member named Standolyn Robertson. Standolyn is also a business owner and our conversation was about managing expectations ? both ours and our clients. She said something that is very true--'It is about using our knowledge and expertise to foresee and side-step roadblocks, revise unrealistic timelines and debunk myths.' And I couldn't agree more. People Literacy Every Manager has experienced the frustration of not understanding why one management approach that works beautifully with one employee is ineffective with another. That's because what we think would be motivating isn't always motivating to someone else.
