Choose Happiness
It's a beautiful spring day in Beverly Hills, California. I'm looking out my window at elm trees in full leaf and roses in full bloom, and thinking about the people who helped me get where I am today. Mark Johnson was the kind of guy some people love to hate. He was always in a great mood and always had something positive to say. When he saw you, he enthusiastically boomed, "Hello, my friend!" When you asked him how he was, he nearly shouted, "I'm on top of the world!" I was sometimes a little embarrassed by his noisy exuberance, but I was glad he was my friend. Mark was a unique worker at the Phelps Dodge Copper Mine in my home town of Ajo, Arizona. The miners followed him around. Because of his attitude, he was a natural motivator. If one of the guys was having a bad day, Mark was there to help him see the bright side of any situation. Once I remember him taking one of the men to the bank with him after work. I later learned that Mark had personally given over half his check to help that man cover his family's medical bills. It wasn't the first time Mark had done this. Many could testify to his generosity. And those were tough times for copper miners in the 1970's-with only a decade left before the mine would close, and Ajo would turn into a ghost town Mark Johnson and I worked in the Smelter-the OVEN. Hot enough to melt gold. Hot enough to melt your shoes?it was Hell. Mark's positive approach to life made me curious, so one day I asked him, "I don't get it! Everyone grumbles and complains about the hard work, the heat, and the low wages. Everyone but you. No one can be a positive person all the time. How do you do it?" Mark had a quick answer, and a quicker smile, "Each morning I wake up and say to myself, 'Mark, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or you can choose to be in a bad mood.' Don, I choose to be in a good mood. Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or I can choose to learn from it. Don, I choose to learn from it. Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining or I can point out the positive side of life. Don, I choose the positive side of life." "Yeah, right, it's not that easy," I protested. "Yes, it is," Mark said. "Life is all about choices. Every situation is a choice. You choose how you react to each situation. You choose how people will affect your mood. You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood. The bottom line: it's your choice how you live life." My job in the mines that summer was challenging. I was only 19 years old after all. I was home for the summer to try to make enough money for my sophomore year at Arizona State. Challenging? That is a major understatement. My assignment: to shovel from the top of the OVEN the metallic soot that would build up on the roof. It took a shovel and an industrial strength vacuum cleaner to do the job. Life threatening? Yep! That OVEN had to be clean or it might collapse. We worked in crews of two-man teams. For safety, we strapped wooden platforms beneath our shoes. As we worked we kept an eye on our platforms, and if they started to smoke, we jumped off the OVEN before our shoes caught fire. The top of the OVEN was the hottest, because heat rises. I resented when Mark was transferred to the ICE HOUSE. He was going to work in the coolest place in Arizona during that infernal summer. Why not me? He now had one of the nicest jobs you could get in that fiery Hell called a copper mine. Why not me? Things change. The miners went on strike. Mark came to me in great distress. It was the first time I'd ever seen him upset. "Don," he said, "I've got to work. I'm going to have to be a scab. I have a family to feed. My wife Becky is 8 months pregnant." Tough decision. The toughest. In Ajo, an innocent child of a scab was once shot to death. Countless are the brutal stories I can recall of how scabs were severely beaten, crippled or killed for their decision to cross the picket line. Mark had nowhere to turn. Copper mining was the only industry in that town 100 miles from civilization. He had no money to move, no money to travel. Sadly, I supported him in his decision. What else could I do? The next day was ugly. Hundreds of angry miners lined up to taunt, jeer and protest the few scabs who showed up to work. Mark hung his head in shame as he drove through the picket line in a company truck with armed escorts. The decision to work was fatal. But not because of the miners' hatred of scabs. Mark was assigned my job to clean the top of the OVEN. The same I'd worked on only days before. That day, witnesses saw the OVEN collapse, and my friend Mark was instantly incinerated. Mark's death had a major impact on me. It could have been my life that was taken by that OVEN. I was a kid, and I hurt. Worst of all, I felt guilty for resenting his time in the Ice House. I felt guilty for not always welcoming his positive outlook. But, now he was gone. His family was fatherless. Because his last work was that of a scab, he was counted as a temporary worker, and the family lost all his benefits. It was a tragedy I couldn't handle. The fire of that oven burned inside my gut. I had to turn my anger, my guilt, and my sadness and pain into something positive. I reflected on Mark's upbeat philosophy and decided that I could best honor him by being like him, and focusing on the good in my life. Mark's untimely death taught me a valuable lesson. Life is short. There is no telling when we will be called to take the Great Adventure. Each day of our lives is precious. Mark was 100% right. Each day is a choice. You and you alone decide what kind of day you will have. You can choose to be happy or sad, loving or hateful. Enlightenment is all about choice. What choice are you going to make today? Remember my friend Mark this week and make the choice to be happy. Top 10 Secrets for Being HAPPY! One of my favorite songs is Bobby McFerrin's refrain, "Don't Worry, Be Happy". I recently had the opportunity to observe people's reactions when a highway was closed because of an accident ahead. As we waited, I watched as some listened to radios, a few began tossing a Frisbee, other's seemed to be working or reading, and some opted for a quick nap. But, there were also a handful who were clearly agitated and angry. Pacing about, swearing, and upset, they decided that the best response to this event, which none of us could control, was to be very unhappy. I was reminded of Abraham Lincoln's comment that, "Most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be." The following are my Top 10 Tips to increase happiness in your life: Happiness - Work Now or Later? Long-term success and happiness follows hand-in-hand with strength of character. Common Scents For Emotional Well Being Aromatics which include essential oils, perfume, centred candles and incense, have been used for centuries to affect the mind (and also, ultimately, the body) in a positive way. This practice finds its origins in religion and primitive beliefs. Aboriginal Australians burned the leaves of eucalyptus to fumigate an area from viruses. Aboriginal Americans use sage and cedar and the Slavs, such plants as sunflower, pine and garlic peels for the same purposes. This was done because occult powers were thought to be sensitive to fragrances and could protect against fever, sorcery, epidemics and demonic charms. Colors: How Do They Make You Feel? One of the most important colors in advertising is the color blue. Calm, comforting, soothing, and peaceful are all feelings evoked from this color. The color blue is also often used in a smooth way, many night clubs and upscale stores will use this color to provide a sense of an icy ambiance and a cool feeling. Contrast Can Work FOR You Have you ever had an experience where everything you wanted had come to you and THEN you discovered something that seemed to spoil the entire event? Dont Let Life Happen to You Don't Let Life Happen To You It is not death that a man should fear, but he should fear never beginning to live. - Marcus Aurelius (121-80 AD, Roman Emperor, Philosopher) Lifes Like that It is now 5 years since I passed out of college and started working. Ilove working. I am not a workaholic but I love working. There is a lotof pressure in the work we all do. This era is all about speed.Everything around us moves at the speed of thought. And the wiseguys from the big B-Schools would tell you to be there at the righttime or else you'll loose the next big opportunity. All of us try tosearch for the next big opportunity so that we are not left of out inthis race. We travel from place to place in search for that hiddentreasure, success, happiness or whatever one may like to call it. I have closely interacted with hundreds of people in these years andone of my favorites activity is studying people and humanbehavior. In the beginning I used to get surprised (sometimes evenlaugh) when I hear a new kid out of college and starting his lifesay that he feels burnt out. But then if you look at it closely, thekid is right. He is burnt out before he even starts because he isalways expected to perform beyond what his mind and body can take. There is always this sense of urgency within all of us that usuallykeeps us unhappy no matter what we achieve. I too was in this rat race till my mother taught me the most importantlesson of my life and that is about being in the present and enjoyingevery moment of it. Sadly though I had lost my mother by then. I stillremember that day on 18th December 2002 when I was thinking about mymother in the back of my mind but yet I stayed in the office as we had this requirement to get the ISDN up in our office. I was scaredthat if the leased lines goes down we'll not have an alternative. So Isat with the providers and did not listen to my heart. As a result bythe time I went to see my mom it was too late. I wish I had followed myheart instead. That is when I realized that the ISDNconnection had no real significance in my life and yet I gave it anunwanted priority. Here are some rules I live by now which I hope would help all of you. They say that it is best to learn from others mistakes. 6 basic rulesthat we must all follow to be happy - Live in the present - Most good books on better living talk about being in the present. You cannotafford to think and live in the past. Neither can you think about thefuture all the time. You do not know what would happen in the future. You do not have control over it. This does not mean that we should notplan. It just means that we do not need to over stress ourselvesthinking about what would happen in the future. Let me explain with a simple example. You want to go for avacation. You need to plan and buy the tickets in time. But it does notmean that when you are in the train or aircraft you start runninginside it. You'll not reach any faster than all the other passengerswho are traveling with you. However, do remember that you must learn from your past and improveuponit. The food from Pizza Hut is fattening. This means that it wouldremain the same, unless they do some major changes to the way pizzasare made. So saying that I cannot think about the past and I shouldkeep going over and over again to Pizza Hut does no make sense. Also another important point is that you must learn to visualize aboutthe future. When I was kid our swimming coach used to talk a lot aboutthe power of visualization. He used to say that if you going for acompetition tomorrow, the previous night one should visualize theentire event. It goes like this - Ifeel light and energetic. The weather is great for swimming. I am goingto get the best place. My start is perfect. I have a perfect dive inthe water. The water is not too hot neither is it too cool. It is justright for me. My breathing is perfect and my strokes are perfect andcoordinated. I am the winner... Simulate the same situation when you are facing a client or an ISOauditor. Another aspect I'll like to point out here is that some people get intothe urgency because they feel insecure about the future. They think "IfI die my wife or family would face alot of problems... " In the process they start taking insurancepoliciesleft and right, try to buy a house etc.. In many cases they are notable to keep up with all the liabilities and in that tension many doreally die. One must plan and have a secure future butnever over do anything. Take commitments only when it is possible tolive up to the commitment. In short it all boils down to one thing. Be happy and live in themoment. Enjoy every moment of it. Because the present will become thepast tomorrow and you need to cherish it then. Never have any anger - Thereare times we are unhappy because we have anger against somebody. Thatreally does not help. All it does is make us sad. In no way does iteffect the person who has angered you. As in my case I was angry withthe providers for having given us a good for nothing ISDN modem. What Ilost in return was a lot more. It is not possible for us to not getangry because the reason why one gets angry is when things do not workthe way we want it to. When people do not behave the way we want themto. And this would continue to happen. The best we can do is focus onsomething else in such situations. That makes us more relaxed. Also, begrateful for what you have and do not think about what you do not have. There are many in this world who are lessfortunate than we are. Never have an ego -Most of us have a big ego which makes us all worse than what we think we are. Weare nobody to judge another person. We are nobody to justify ouractions on others because of what they did to us. In most cases when wedo something against a person it would due to some false ego we haveinside us. "How could he do this tome. I'll show him who I am".... Like I said a little while ago.I am nobody. If somebody treats you bad it is his fault and there noneed for you to teach him a lesson. He needs to have self realizationabout it. Most of our epics is about teaching a lesson to the otherperson. I remember as a kid watching Mahabharat and Ramayana on TV,most of times somebody would be testing somebody else's ego. When I do talk about ego, I feel it is necessary to talk about self esteemtoo..Both these are very different. We all must have a level of self esteemand dignity. But we must not allow somebody else to treat us as a doormat. If you do notlike what the other person did to you. Cut off the relation orremove the expectations. Take pride in who you are- What is the Ultimate Lifestyle? Since the mission of this newsletter is to help you define, carve out, and live your own Ultimate Lifestyle, I figured I should devote some space to laying a proper foundation for doing that. Change 1 Thing Per Month - Making it Great One Step at a Time So you're stuck in a rut, bored with how your life is, and you can't think of how to get through this period. Einstein defined insanity as "doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." So stop being insane?and try something new. Can Money Buy You Happiness? Well, doesn't that depend on what's causing you to be unhappy, in the first place? Choose To Integrate Body, Mind, & Soul Our bodies were made in such a way that everything is integrated. Themind appears to control everything. When something happens to thebody whether good or bad, it registers in the brain and the brain thendictates the bodies response. Scientists has found that it also worksthat way within the body. Biofeedback has shown that the mind candirect the immune system to fight various infections in the body includ-ing the dreaded strains of cancer. For the average person this is a wonderful idea, but biofeedback costs money and besides noteveryone has a life threatening problem. Imagine being able to do thisfor yourself in the comfort of your own home, office or anywhere elseyou can go to be alone for a few minutes! There are another kind ofscience that is telling us that the body listens when we talk. Thinkabout that for a minute. When we talk we are saying what the mind isthinking; we are just saying it outloud. So, it follows we can do ourown biofeedback anywhere we want. A very simple illustration of thiswill prove this to you. Hold your arms out in front of you extendingyour two index fingers. Shut your eyes and repeat our loud, "fingerscome together". Think it and say it and within two minutes your fingersdo come together. When I first tried this it was very exciting to methat it worked because for me it opened possibilities in my mind! Sincethen I have become a talker to myself! A self whisperer if you will. Italk to my body and to my sub conscious even and I have gotten amazing results. This is one thing that I think will work for everyonebecause this is one of the functions of the body, mind and soul thatwas part of the design, just as blood running through everyone's bodyis the same. But, you must have an open mind! Your mind acceptsthat blood runs through the body in a specific manner and so it must accept that the body, mind and soul will listen when it is spoken to, no matter who is speaking, yourself or someone else. Getting Connected "The foolish man seeks happiness in the distance, the wise grows it under his feet." -James Oppenheim Our Feelings and Attitudes Around Happily Ever After Our feelings and attitudes have a huge impact on our ability to achieve 'happily ever after.' Are feelings and attitudes the same thing or different? Does one cause the other to happen? Which one has more power over how we respond? Does the person experiencing them have any choice in the matter? What if they are in conflict? Relationships and the Law of Attraction This question and answer article was done by Gizelle River, Virtual Administrator and Writer. Visit her website. Clearing a Path for Happiness In the United States, the pursuit of happiness is a god-given right and Americans have a document to prove it. But I wonder why the Founding Fathers deliberately phrased it, 'the pursuit of happiness', as if to say --- happiness in itself cannot be granted because it was, and still remains, tied to materialism. In the "pursuit" of happiness, it is each person's own definition: riches, health, religion, etc. Personal Alchemy, Turn Your Suffering into Gold I am sure it is safe to say that each of us has had times in our lives when we had hopes, anticipation, expectations and events where we desired a certain outcome. Choose To Be Happy - NOW! The older I get, the more I realize that ninety percent of life is about choices. Both the choice to be happy or unhappy is mine. Sure, unforeseeable circumstances come and rattle our cages from time to time but it's our decision how we choose to cope with them. We can resolve to allow the situations to defeat us or we can simply count it all joy. |
