What Are Your Priorities?
"The indispensable first step to getting the things you want out of life is this: decide what you want." At the end of every winter as warm weather and sunshine approach, I find myself keenly aware of where I'd like to be spending my time. Outside as much as possible! I think the changing of the seasons is a great time to re-evaluate our life and what areas we would like to change. After all, if you don't know what you want, it's impossible to get it. Take a moment now to evaluate your quality of life. Do you know what you want from this life before your time is over? On the suggestion of a good friend, I sat down recently and wrote out a list of my personal priorities. It was a very eye-opening and useful experience. Once I could see clearly (on paper!) my true, personal priorities it was obvious what small changes I could make in order to more fully live my life the way I want. It is a very motivational experience that left me feeling fully "alive". Thinking about your professional life, what are your priorities? You might want that promotion, corner office or dream job. It's important to have clear goals but you also need a plan to get yourself there. When you look at your choices each day, ask yourself if they are helping you make progress toward your envisioned future or not. Once you have identified the actions that are hindering you, it is easy to let them go. You can begin to focus on making more choices that are in-line with your professional vision and growth plan. Take this opportunity to start new growth. Lay down some constructive plans for your quality of life and professional development. Who knows what your life could look like this time next year! If you have a daunting task and the mere thought of it overwhelms you, it's probably too big to implement directly and should be broken down into actionable parts. I find this happens to me frequently -- I see the big strategic goal that I want to achieve, but become paralyzed thinking about the size of the project. To accomplish my overall goal, I need to crack this task into small doable pieces. In that way, I keep it simple and focused on one thing at a time. Attitude What makes attitude so important? Why not just learn some "seductiontechniques" to get the girl? The answer is simple: learning techniques (orhaving expensive clothing and cars) without improving your attitude is likewrapping a cheap gift in expensive wrapping paper. It still looks expensiveon the outside, but when the girl "unwraps" you, she'll find out that youwere faking it all along. This might work for a one-night stand, but if youwant anything more, you'll need to change both on the "inside" and"outside". Make Your Life Easier? 'Have you read the Art of War?' someone asked me once. Fighting someone to get your way is definitely a valid strategy. But you don't need me to tell you about that one - we've all been arguing and manipulating to get our own way since we were born! And you may have noticed - often when you push, the other person pushes back! Wars have been fought, relationships lost, and many ulcers create with this kind of energy. Creating An Effective Toolbox For Success WHAT'S IN YOUR TOOLBOX? The Harvest: Shared Power The fall harvest comes upon us once a year. The farmers collect the sometimes-scant rewards of their heroic efforts begun months before. For those of us who are hobby or family gardeners, fall is the time for us to pluck the firm orange pumpkins, the deep green flowers of broccoli, and the plump red tomatoes from their vines. As we reap our rewards of months of work and waiting from the backdrop of the black, black earth, we realize our personal power. If not for our labors, if not for our devoted attention and timely reaction to environmental hazards, these fruits would not be borne. The seeds we sowed in the early spring have given us sustenance and security for the coming frigidness.
