Parts that Make the Whole? or Not
There are many parts that make up you. There's the Musical You, the Friendly You, the Amazing You, the Genius You, the Calm You, the Peaceful You, and many more parts that make up who you are ? much like an identity check list: All round good guy/gal part - check We all have wonderful attributes; we also have parts not so wonderful which we'd rather keep hidden but really, it's okay to acknowledge we have both. There's a part of me that's greedy. I can be greedy and thirsty for knowledge. On the flip side I will give away this knowledge to others. In a nutshell, there's a part of me that really wants it and another part that gives it away. Sometimes we have infighting between parts because one wants to do one thing and the other part wants to do the opposite, much like a tug of war. An example is when you hear yourself or someone else say "A part of me would really love to move on but then again a part of me would rather I stay" or "There's a part of me that loves what money can bring but there's another part that says it's not important". Eventually we can become indecisive, apathetic, confused or frustrated, to name a few. If a win/win negotiation becomes lose/lose our parts will slowly begin to separate from our true self. Imagine for a moment a plump juicy, untouched mandarin. With the mandarin's segments still deliciously intact and protected by its shiny, orange outer skin, it's whole. Now imagine that these segments are the mandarin's parts or aspects if you like. Once peeled and a segment is broken off it then becomes separate from its original form. Very much like our parts when they separate. The difference is we can reclaim ours - the mandarin simply gets eaten. Something Fun to Do If you've haven't given much thought to how many sides of you there are, maybe you'd like to try the following exercise. You can do this as a group or as something private and only for you. Here's what you do: *Pencil in approximately one hour of 'Me Time' in your diary for the weekend, a day off, or after working hours and find yourself an area where you'll be undisturbed. *Get some A4 coloured sheets of paper, coloured pencils/textas/crayons, scissors, glue, and a large sheet of white card paper, and anything else you might like to include. *Get into the Zone by spending some time in quiet contemplation before you start. *When you're ready - write on your coloured sheets of paper the parts of you that you discover. Some examples might be: Busy Me! Genius Me! Loud Me! Considerate Me! Hormonal Me! Selfish Me! Masculine/Feminine Me! Creative Me! The Sex Goddess/God Me! Wicked Me! *Cut out all the different parts and glue to your large card paper ? you might like to add stories to it, favourite quotations and anything you believe is relevant to you. *When you've completed this exercise, step back and notice how truly unique you are. Judging by the extraordinarily positive reader response to Po Bronson's What Should I Do With My Life?, people are aching for a sympathetic outlook on their stories of career dissatisfaction. Why a Coach is NOT a Consultant Often while talking to people about my coaching practice I get asked what the difference is between a coach and a consultant. Many people believe they are either the same thing or very similar. This is untrue. There are many distinct differences between someone who coaches and someone who consults. Be A Champion Communicator by Becoming a Chameleon Recently, I worked with a client who was having a problem with some of the women in her organization. The organization had just undergone major changes, which resulted in different reporting relationships for many of the women. The problem was that the women were having trouble effectively communicating with their new bosses. Forget Resolutions - Craft A Life Theme That Works How many people do you know who, in January, enthusiastically name their resolution for the year yet somehow neglect to follow through with it a few weeks or months later? Forget making New Year's resolutions. They rarely work because they are often based on "shoulds" versus the bigger picture of your life. What I've found does work is creating a life theme for the year ahead.Your life theme will be your overriding intention or "big picture" focus for the upcoming months. It has an expiration date of December 31, when you'll get a chance to re-evaluate your direction. Having a life theme is like having a personal mission statement for your whole life, personal and professional, updated annually. A life theme works because it takes into consideration and connects all your intentions for the year in a succinct and powerful phrase. This collection of one to five words describes what you want to accomplish in all areas of your life and cements your main priorities with intended action.Discover Your IntentionsPerhaps as you've explored who you are and what you want to create for your life, you've noticed that "Wellbeing" or "Wellness" has come up for you over and over. Or perhaps you've noticed more of a "Relationship" theme. Or maybe the word "Passion" has tugged at your heart repeatedly, or you've focused on "Patience." These are all great themes for the upcoming year. Through your own personal discovery, you may recognize that you haven't made time in your life for many friends, that your networks are weak and that you'd like to have a social circle beyond your immediate family. Your life theme in this case could be "Connection." It may be you've realized that your life is far more filled with work and errands than with fun and play, and you want to fix that imbalance. Your life theme then could be "Energize." Feel the MagicBase your theme on what you find joyful and what you want to accomplish both personally and professionally. Your theme needs to strike an emotional chord with you and bring a smile to your face when your say it. You must own it. You must feel your theme's magic. It must propel you forward. Now take a few moments to reflect on the bigger picture vision you have for your life. What would you like to accomplish first? What will bring you joy and fulfillment with your work, your family, and your personal time? What is the essence of what you wish to experience in this upcoming year? When you have an idea of what it is you wish to create and who you want to "be," take some time to meditate or concentrate on developing your life theme. The right phrase for you may come to you immediately, or it may take some time to evolve. Brief is BestWhen the phrase does reveal itself to you, try to keep it to a maximum of five words. Brief is better. Feel the power of these concise life themes: "Let go. Rebuild. Move Forward. Growth and Independence. Balance and Follow-through. Connection. Stretch. Calm and Quiet." You might have to live with your life theme for a week before you know that it's the one that will speak to you for the next year. You will know when you've got it. Get StartedOnce your life theme is clear, write it down. Put it where you will see it every day as a reminder of where you are heading in 2005. Tell loved ones, friends and colleagues what your life theme is. The more often you say it and share the more real it will become. Every time you make a decision large and small put it through your life theme filter. If your theme is "connection" say yes to building friendships, social invitations and neighborhood parties. If your theme is "adventure and fun" perhaps you say no that new pair of shoes and yes to signing up for a rock climbing course. The most surefire method to ensuring you live your life theme is to ask yourself every morning when you wake "what can I do today to experience my life theme." The key to success is to be intentional with your thoughts and actions on a daily basis. By living intentionally and with purpose you'll never feel the need to make another New Year's resolution again. Business Coaching Legacy: Reflections on What You Want to Leave Behind? Updating my will has been on my mind for quite some time now. Life circumstances change, kids grow-up, financial situations changes. I procrastinated for a very long time about this will.
