New Age Spirituality
New Age Spirituality is all about getting back your power. Not that you ever lost it. Sometimes you gave your power away, misplaced it, or forgot you had power in the first place. And why does the term: "New Age Spirituality"... seem to bother some religious leaders, especially leaders of the Christian faith? After all, we are in a new age: The Age of Aquarius. The concept of an Age exists within ancient spiritual traditions, and lasts 2000 years. It denotes a change process, occurring during those 2000 years, for the evolution of consciousness, for the good of all. The energy which entered this plane over 2000 years ago, at the beginning of what astrology calls the Piscean Age...was Agape (brotherly and sisterly love) - love of one human being for another, simply because each is worthy of love and part of the same human family. That energy is only now being accepted in any general manner. It has taken us the entire Age for us to "get it." Christ brought this love-energy to our world over 2000 years ago, and we humans have been working on it ever since. We are just beginning to open, to sisters and brothers everywhere. And now that The Age of Aquarius is finally here...maybe we have developed that critical mass of love-energy that is needed for this New Age Spirituality. This time, the message expands to, "not only are we brothers and sisters...we are one." The Piscean Age taught us, we are all connected; we must love one another as ourselves. The "other" is an illusion. You and I are one consciousness, reflected in an infinite rainbow of seeming difference. All is one. The Age of Aquarius is referred to as the "New Age," but there is nothing new about it. It is simply an evolution in human thinking. "New Age" thinking, asks that each person take responsibility for everything that happens in life...because everything in life is connected. We must learn to love ourselves; for out of love for one's self, comes love for others. The person who is bound by a negative image, wallowing in self-doubt, does not permit time or energy to really care about anyone else. When we confront ourselves, and understand the causes for our feelings of hatred and anger, we can change the feelings...or even let them go. This involves taking responsibility for what we feel; becoming more consciously aware of why we feel what we do. In doing so, we are expanding our conscious awareness. To use a New Age term- we are "raising our consciousness" about our unconscious perceptions of who we are, and how we are behaving. Peace for the world begins with peace within ourselves. The biggest hurdle is learning how to create that inner peace and balance. The best way to inner peace...is to go within. How do you go within? You meditate. If prayer is talking to God, (Divine Intelligence, Source, Creator or whatever word you prefer to use) then "meditation" is the art of listening to God, while in an altered state of consciousness. By going within, you connect with your God-Source, and you can receive all the answers to any question about your life that you might pose. This is what gives you back your power. For truly, you are a child of God, and as a child of God...a co-creator, One with the Infinite. You do not need a priest or a minister to intercede for you. And that scares your religious leaders. They recognize that you no longer need them in the same way you did in the past. They also recognize; they can no longer control you, through guilt or fear. Is it any wonder the words, or the concept of New Age Spirituality frightens religious leaders? There is no doubt: We have left the Piscean Age, symbolized by the sign of the fish...and have entered the Aquarian Age symbolized by the water bearer. It is time to take back your power. It is time to remember you had it all along. About The Author Elaine Murray is a retired elementary school teacher who lives on the shores of Lake Erie in Southern Ontario, Canada. Honoring the Sacred in Everyday Life How many of us rush blindly through our days, fall into bed exhausted, and wake up the next morning to do it all over again? For many of us, our lives are composed of millions of meaningless moments, all strung together -- perhaps with a sprinkling of sacred moments mixed in. I'm sure you can think of a few sacred moments in your own life. Maybe your marriage, the birth of your child(ren), or perhaps a heartfelt moment of connection with a good friend. These are the moments when we are consumed with joy and awe. At these moments, we are fully present in the moment. We aren't worrying about tomorrow, or trying to rush through the experience to get to the next. We are in the now, and the now is amazing. Whatd We Miss? Did we just overlook the amount of love that God has for us? How Much Do You Love Me? Love...it's a deep emotion. Sometimes we say it in jest to appease someone. We say it to friends when we feel more than just a casual liking for them, but would we die for them? Spouses say it to eachother out of habit sometimes, parents tell their children, "I love you". Being a parent, I feel this is probably the truest form of love as we know it. Can people really know what it means to have perfect love? God showed us what this kind of love is, He calls it agape' love. There are no boundaries to this love, there are no exceptions and no excuses. Our love tends to wax and wane when someone either pleases us or disappoints us. It's a good thing God doesn't measure His degree of love for us that way. His love never changes even for the child who is disobedient and turns his back on God. Let's look at a man who loved God so much he would do anything. Standing in the Gap I'm weary of saying No to my children. Not just the everyday No's. Don't hit your brother and No, you cannot have 5 pieces of candy. I am weary of the No I am continually saying to our culture. The world is bound and determined to take away my children's innocence. They want my children to grow up way too fast. They want my little girl to dress like an adult. They want my little boy to know things he is way too young to know. I'm weary of saying you can't go to that movie, because it is not appropriate for your age. No, you can't wear what everyone else is wearing, because it is not appropriate. The straw that finally broke the camel's back was when my son walked in while I was watching the news. He asked me, "Mommy is it true that men can marry men and women can marry women?" "Mom, if two women marry can they have a baby?" My son is 6. I don't want to be discussing sexuality with him much less homosexuality. So, I told him that no men can't marry men and women can't marry women (for now anyway) and that women with women cannot have a baby. (Don't get me started on explaining how they can). I should not be having these discussions with my children, but I'm being forced too. What happened to childhood innocence? Payday Someday Let us face reality squarely in the face by acknowledging the tragic fact that it does not matter how "good" you may be, folks can always concoct a way to destroy you. If people want to tear down your good name, they will find a way to somehow achieve it. If jealous, envious, greedy individuals want something you have, they will do anything and use any willing body to get you out of the way. Four Voices The Bible tells us that we must be led by the Holy Spirit. Since there are always four voices we hear speaking to us at any given time, we must learn to distinguish each one so that we are able to do the right things. Kachina Doll To a shaman a kachina isn't really a doll or a child's toy. Also, it isn't a collector's piece of art or a decoration. However, it is often used that way, and that's ok too. There is a place for that approach in our lives. They do make a powerful addition to any home's decor, and make a great conversation piece. So, if you are a history buff, especially American history, a kachina collection is most appropiate. Kachinas origionally came from the Hopi and Navajo tribes in the American Southwest. If you enjoy sacred art, like I do, add a kachina to your collection. Life is like Golf In the golfing world, yesterday may have been oneof the most exciting and long awaited days in thesports history. "The Masters" golf tournament isthe most prestigious championships in all of golf, but no more important than to the man that won it.As he walked up the eightieth fairway, I couldn'thelp but wonder what was going through his mind. You see, Phil Mickelson was known as the bestgolfer in the world who never won a majorchampionship. In forty-seven tries he placed inthe top ten eight times and three of them werepreviously placing third in The Masters, yet henever could win the big one. He developed areputation of choking in the last rounds neverable to finish on top of the leaderboard. Drifting Like a Summer Breeze He knew it was going to happen. He wasn't really surprised.Yeah, if he had to be honest with himself, it hit him kind of hard because he had been with them for so long. But to be honest, they never really showed any real interest in him or his work. What Makes You A Saint Don't be confused that a saint is a religious leader sort of person who has a particular way of dressing and a lonely life-style. Instead, a saint is a person who leads a simple disciplined life with a motto of "Service Above Self". He is a person who has crossed the barrier that bars from being spiritual. So, if you want to become a saint then you have to work towards crossing the threshold that will lead you into spirituality. Thou Shalt Not Be Shallow I have sent out hundreds of press releases for my new book entitled Hook Line and Sinker or What Has Your Church Been Teaching You, published by Publish America of Baltimore MD.It has been a great learning experience for me. Heart Matters-- What Matters Most With excitement and anticipation I jumped on aplane last Thursday evening to Florida to visit myfamily and fish some with my dad. Six hours afterarrival I painfully watched while many types ofmedical professionals frantically, yetmethodically temporarily stop my father's heart inorder to prevent it not to matter twenty minuteslater. Eliminating the Past Most forms of psychotherapy I know either tries to help you accept the past, understand the past, learn from the past, perceive the past differently, or try to take the emotional edge of the past. In spite of all this effort to ameliorate the effects of the past it, in the end, is still inside you and you continue to identify yourself with it. Living The Lords Prayer Luke 11:1 And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.11:2 And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven... Our Father which art in heavenHallowed be Thy name.Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be doneOn Earth as it is in heaven.Give us this day, our daily breadAnd forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evilFor thine is the Kingdom, the power and the glory,Forever, Amen.I have a special place in my life for this prayer. When I close my eyes in meditation I always begin with this prayer, and when I lay down to go to sleep I usually do the same. Jesus taught his disciples this prayer as a guide to getting in touch with our inner peace, and open the door to communication with God the Father and the Creator. I believe that we should be praying to our Creator all the time, every moment of our lives; it should be a common practice. The Lord's Prayer is short enough to be an affirmation that is easily applied at any time.I have used this prayer when I am afraid or unsure and one thing that always shines through is the Truth. That is what The Lord's Prayer is, how to be the Truth. In the dictionary Truth is also defined as "reality". The Lord's Prayer is a special prayer asking that we may recognize Reality/Truth and eventually be that Truth, just as Jesus was the Way, the Truth and the Life.My interpretation of The Lord's Prayer is not the only one, there are many others, but I am sharing mine with you in the hope that we can experience this prayer rather than just recite it. Our Father who art in Heaven... Where is Heaven? Jesus tells us that The Kingdom of Heaven is within us, and that special place is where we can go to connect with God our Creator. For me it is a wonderful place of peace and silence. Last summer I had a glorious experience; I spent ten days in my trailer parked in my mom's backyard. For those ten days I enjoyed listening to the birds and working in the garden. But most of all I learned how to enjoy the silence within. I discovered for myself how to go to this personal place and listen and feel the intense "peace". There was one moment that I will always remember, it was a feeling of such happiness, so much Joy that I could not contain it all; at that moment I felt the most joy I have ever felt in my life. God is within each and every one of us; He is the Light and the creative and loving urge in us that seeks expression. We only have to be still and know that God is in the silence within. Hallowed be Thy Name...The name of God is sacred. His "Name" is his Essence, it is in us - we are sons of God. What does that mean? That means that his Essence or Spirit is in our DNA, that is what makes us more special, and elevated above all other creatures. God created us in his image; he gave us his Name and that name is in our bodies, right down to the cellular level. Thy Kingdom come, Thy Will be doneOn Earth as it is in Heaven... God's Kingdom is within each and every one of us. His Will, as Thought (in Heaven), is manifest on Earth (physical form). This verse teaches us that what we think becomes manifest here in this world. With our thoughts we can either make or create. When we use His Will we create; and only creation is real. Jesus taught that sickness and poverty do not have to exist; we make these things and so they are not real; we need only recognize the Truth or reality and look away from the false appearances that this world shows us. It takes great faith to be able to do this, but Jesus assured us that if he could do it, so can we. This line in the prayer is an affirmation of reality. Give us this day, our daily bread..."...this day..." The only time that is real is NOW, there is no other time. The NOW is also Eternity. Eternity is defined as "no beginning, and no ending", "unchanging", and "forever". When you examine all these definitions you begin to see how each of these verses seem to have the same meaning ? Eternity, Truth, Reality, NOW... When we look for evidence of God we have only to look at the trees and the flowers, feel the wind in our hair, and the warmth of the sun on our face. God exists in the Now, and we will only find his presence here. The bread is our daily staple, it is a requirement. The Lord's Prayer is a daily requirement. And the requirement is experiencing the moment, the NOW, because that is all that we really have and that is where God is. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. It is so important to let go of the negative feelings that keep you separated from God. Connected to God we shine, and when we harbor darkness such as thoughts of resentment, anger, and jealousy, we are disconnected. Likewise, we should not worry about others opinions or judgments of us, these are the things that this verse tells us is important to remember. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil... "temptation" is not the urge to eat that whole chocolate cake, but rather it is asking our Father to help us to control our thought. It is our Thought that determines what we make or create in this world, and we have to be very careful what thoughts we focus on. We are continuously hearing our ego talk to us, and our ego has it's own agenda. For thine is the Kingdom, the power and the glory... So true, and so powerful a statement! Only in God do we have a kingdom, it is not here in the material world, it is in the Kingdom of Heaven which is within us. But don't think that the material world is not important! It is very important - we have a Divine Purpose for being here. Forever, Amen... Forever; eternity; NOW and always; Unchanging; No beginning and no ending. Amen means "it is done", "so be it". This is a very powerful word. To affirm that something is already done is to proclaim its power. Pray with reverence and meaning and you shall always be close to our Father. By using this special prayer that Jesus taught us we can learn to connect with the Universe and let our thoughts work for us instead of against us, because it has never been more true that our thoughts have the all the power of God's creation behind them. Amen. The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly That we must live with imperfections is a fact of life that cannot be denied. We must come to terms with the silent and perennial truth that the field of human life will always consist of the good, the bad and the ugly coexisting together. Elvis Left the Building and Moved in with Me! Years ago no matter where I lived, whether a house was new or not, I'd experience doors opening and closing by themselves, items disappearing only to be found later in the strangest places, seeing people others didn't and being touched by unseen hands. Not only was this unnerving; it was also really frustrating! Each time I moved I'd think "Here we go again! What surprises are in store for me this time?" New Century; Same Old Story In His graciousness, God has blessed us to enter a new century. When you look back on the years and experiences you had in the last century, you probably wonder why you did not lose your mind. When you think about some of the traumas and extreme challenges you had to contend with, you know you should have had a breakdown or been confined to the rubber room. Spiritual Surrender: Let Nature Be Your Teacher Although spring is just around the corner, there have been days lately where it feels as though it will never be here. I am not a cold weather person and I never have been. I often kid with people that when it came my time to come to Earth I had requested to live someplace like Tahiti, somehow my request was confused with someone else's who had asked for cold weather and I ended up in the hills of Connecticut. Not funny! As I sit here in this cold, April weather waiting for spring, the one thing I am sure of is that spring will come. Before I know it the snow will have melted and the grass will be green. The daffodils and tulips will be blooming in all of their colorful glory and I will feel the warmth of the spring sun on my face. Lance Armstrong had it Right-- Every Second Does Counts! I have been counseling people on weight loss, exercise efficiency and nutrition for over twenty years. Every time I go to the gym I observe people, their training tactics and their workout habits. Over the last few years I have noticed something about certain people in the gym that has been interesting. You would think more people would do this but they don't. What I have noticed is certain people have a habit or process they go through when they workout that most do not. What is interesting is, before I even realize that they do it, I can tell by the way their bodies look that they have this habit. They are leaner, healthier looking, and stronger than most. People Fail in Life Because They Do Not Plan Life is growth. For many people life is like a merry go round. They feel life is going to work, paying bills, spend time with family that is it. You must always ask this question. Is this all I want in my life? Are you utilizing your God given potential? You must make a choice of how you want to live your life. |
