Fool for God
The following article is an exploration of the Spring holiday season and its spiritual implications. In it will be a unique perspective with a special emphasis on the importance of owning our dualities for the purpose of transcending them. The duality of Spring is that while it is a time for thorough "house cleaning" it also requests of us our lightness of being and simple trust. When we make a complete and unconditional surrender and trust the mysterious, unknown void with our lives, we enter the domain of the Fool for G-d. We become a servant to G-d, which is as free as we can be as human beings. There is no way humans will ever experience pure happiness, peace or love without connection to Spirit. We will always encounter our next level of pain and challenge until we can hold on to our divine connection in all our human interactions and worldly activities. In being a Fool for G-d, we are led by the allure of a deeper mystery, a presence that leads to unimaginable freedom. This article is but one attempt to reawaken ourselves to the truth of that freedom. Michael Ozair ------------------------------ Spring Harvest The Birthing of a New Energy Cycle Background Each year when the Sun goes into Aries, when the Earth begins a new life cycle at the Spring Equinox and when the Moon and the Sun join at the New Moon in Aries, we are offered another opportunity to redefine ourselves, our world and our place in it. The following is a study of some of the energy changes taking place this month. The Talmud records: Conception of the world is in Tishrei (Autumn); Birth of the world is in Nissan (Spring). (Tosaphot; Rosh HaShanah 27a). The Kabbalah distinguishes two types of spiritual dynamic. It speaks of an itaruta de-leylah and an itaruta de-letata, 'an awakening from above' and 'an awakening from below.' An awakening from above is an encounter initiated by G-d - an epic event in history, a miracle, a deliverance, a moment in which the veil is lifted from the course of history and the hand of G-d becomes visible. An awakening from below, though, is one that comes from the hearts and minds of human beings. Something within the human soul breaks forth and reaches out to God. According to Talmud, the birth (of New Energy) happens this coming month, the Hebrew month of Nissan. This itaruta de-leylah , the Arousal (as initiated) from the Above contributes to the birthing in us. This birthing comes as a result of the conception of the earlier part of the year. But unlike the Fall/Winter season of conception, Nissan initiates a different energy dynamic. The connection we make with our Higher Power is no longer something we have to labor for, nor is it contingent upon any merit, but rather it is more about allowing and receiving. The "arousal" is initiated from Above. Our job is simply to "clean house" in order that we may host this New Light, and allow it to stimulate in us a process of awakening to our Higher Nature. When the Higher Meets the Lower Itaruta d'leila, or "Arousal (as initiated) from the Above" gives us specific spiritual work to do. Our job is to allow the Divine to penetrate our very depths, our darkness, and the most hidden aspects of ourselves. According to Kabbalistic philosophy, the lower has to be transformed, not neglected, shunned or condemned. What does it mean to "transform the lower"? The lower part of us is the area of the psyche that an individual would rather not acknowledge. It contains the denied parts of the self. Since the self contains these aspects, they surface in one way or another. Bringing the lower into consciousness diffuses the charge that our darkness has over us , and in the process can even recover valuable resources from it. The transformation comes from having accepted your lower parts and integrated them as components of your Self. Passover is a time of an incredible Itaruta d'leila, an undeserved outpouring of kindness and beneficence from G-d. Israel had descended to the 49th level of impurity and had almost no merits with which to beseech G-d for salvation. Nevertheless, G-d initiated a great Exodus for Israel. On Passover a person must be an open vessel to receive this blessing of Divine Flow. In preparation, we rid ourselves of chametz, all the vanity, the inflated ego, and the resistances for change. On Passover we must remove all the false exteriors, we must be free of obstructions, and open ourselves to receive G-d's blessing of new beginnings. The Hebrew month of Nissan corresponds to the English month of April. The English month April is when a new energy cycle begins. The word "April" comes from the Latin verb "Abrir" which means to open, to release. The term itself implies the energetic work we must do ? opening and releasing ? to clean house for the New Energy to enter and stimulate a change in us. "Spring cleaning" is a beginning point to host a Divine visitation. Origin of April Fool's Day Just as Nissan is the first of the Hebrew months according to the Torah, April was the New Year in the Old World calendar. Ancient cultures, including those as varied as the Romans and the Hindus, celebrated New Year's Day on April 1st. Even the Zodiac wheel begins with the constellation of Aries (April). But in the year 1582 this natural in-sync resonance with the cycles of nature changed, at least with a new Church mandated calendar. In 1582 Pope Gregory XIII ordered a new calendar (the Gregorian Calendar) to replace the old Julian Calendar. The new calendar called for New Year's Day to be celebrated Jan.1st. Many countries, however, resisted the change. In fact, some European countries held out for centuries (Scotland until 1660; Germany, Denmark, and Norway until 1700; and England until 1752). But the first to resist the new calendar changes were in France. Still keeping their traditional calendar (celebrating April 1st as their New Year) they were labeled "April's fools" and it became local custom to pull pranks on those people. "Foolish" Connections Ironically, the word "Fool" is actually an appropriate term to describe the nature of the month of April. For just as Aries is the beginning of the Zodiac, the Fool card is the beginning point of the archetypes of the Tarot Deck. Meaning of Fool Card ? Beginning of a journey with simple faith. Leaping into some new phase of life. Being free spirited, carefree. (as in the Beatles song "Fool on the Hill"). The Zodiac sign Aries that corresponds to April is represented by a Ram's head, a symbol of "energy bursting forth, the creative force of Spirit", much like the Tarot's symbolism, it is the beginning of a journey. Passover occurs this same month, for it is also a new beginning. It is the holiday commemorating the birth of the nation Israel into freedom after the being released from the constraints of Egypt. On the Hebrew Calendar, the Jewish holiday of Purim - where one is expected to increase their joy, light heartedness and foolishness ? comes before Passover. "This is no coincidence", my rebbe R. Shlomo Carlebach explained. "Purim comes before Pesach (Passover) because Purim prepares us for Pesach. I need to get in touch with my joy, before I can even begin to think of leaving my Egypt". Court Jester as Enlightened Fool ? Historically, the court jester was a state-sponsored mischief maker who was not only permitted, but hired to speak his mind--often in jokes, riddles or songs-- when others were forbidden in the presence of power. The jester was the only acceptable form of deviation in the King's courts, expected to poke fun at all the cultural taboos, to puncture the ruler's ego and publicly break rules, thereby allowing an outlet for otherwise "forbidden" insights, behaviors and feelings. The ability to poke fun at the current norms and standards we set for ourselves, or imposed upon us by society is an important part of growth for it allows us to "unlearn". Unlearning is as important for growth as learning. Some of our present knowledge, beliefs, and assumptions about how the world is may no longer be serving our highest interest. The jester allows us to hold a mirror to ourselves and examine our own shortcomings. When we can do this with genuine humor and honesty, we can open ourselves to transformation. Embracing the Paradox of the Season ? Introspection and Foolishness There are two main points which serve as our duality of Spring: First, that a spring cleaning and personal inventory is necessary to receive the influx of Divine Light showered upon Creation during the Spring season. Second, that we must have an almost naïve, foolish surrender into the uncertainty of our own personal journey. In a sense this is a duality in that one requires careful introspection owning all of our parts, which is no easy task. The other requires a detached involvement from the woes of the world, and a conscious "lightness of being". This dual task of living is the key to our liberation. It is when we can embrace both polarities and honor each as they arise, that we are in a better position to "spring forth". It is when we can be the ALL that we are, our light and our shadow, that the Divine is able to find us at our home address. When we are not living at our home address, it is much harder for G-d to reach us. A spring cleaning may not be sufficient by itself. But a deliberate decision to return home and actually live there, will make a better chance for the transformation. Why is it important to "own our darkness" as well as our light? Simply put, because the darkness we don't own, owns us. This Spring, we must accept that we are all here to learn how to navigate this human trip. Therefore, honor yourself and your path. Give yourself a break. Don't be so hard on yourself, yet don't forget yourself either. Celebrate this Spring with a good cleansing, and getting rid of what is no longer necessary, while always remembering to play. It is this season that the Divine comes to not only fill our vessel with Light, but to also give us the strength to create that vessel, especially if we don't have the strength to do it by ourselves. A Simple Fool's Final Prayer May we give each other the strength to cast out of our minds, all the thoughts that are not of our highest and most noble nature. Please G-d, may we not be tempted to doubt the light that lights up the entire world. And through this light, may we become more familiar with the depths and power that we are, when we share in our Divine Inheritance together. Sit or lie in any position you wish. Arrange yourself as if you were preparing for a long chat with a close friend. My Search for the Truth I am a Falun Dafa practitioner. Maybe you've heard about the persecution of Falun Dafa (or Falun Gong) practitioners in China. Over the past five years, many people have been committed to mental institutions, tortured, detained, imprisoned, and even killed, simply for refusing to give up this practice. Unfortunately, most Americans don't know about this situation, or they've been given a negative impression, and so the persecution goes on. My intention is to give my impression of Falun Dafa, and hopefully, bring an awareness of this situation to the people of this country--a country that was founded on the basis of religious and spiritual freedom. All of my life, I have been searching for answers to all of life's most fundamental questions: Why am I here? What is the purpose of life? Why do bad things happen to good people? Who is God? Why does He allow all of this? As a child and again as a teenager, I searched for the answers in Christianity, and even though I sensed wisdom and truth in the teachings of Jesus--being honest, loving thy neighbor, turning the other cheek--there seemed to be something missing. Maybe something got lost in the translation. I didn't have a problem with not understanding everything about God's actions--I mean He is God after all, and so how can I expect to understand Him? However, I did feel that I had some legitimate questions about justice. For instance, why do really bad things happen to seemingly good people? Why are babies born with deformities? How could this person's life of ninety years be equal to that person's life of 25 years? If all you have to do to go to heaven is believe that Jesus died on the cross for your sins, then what kind of a place would heaven be? I mean, I know a lot of people who believe that, and I'm not really sure that heaven would be better than earth if that were the case. Also, what happens to people who have never been exposed to Christianity or believe in some other god or religion? Obviously, I had a lot of questions that could not be answered within the framework of contemporary Christian religions. Consequently, I gave up the search--at least for the time being. When I was twenty-three years old, I became ill. Over the next few years, I became unable to work, and I was eventually diagnosed with lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and vasculitis. I had problems with every joint in my body; I couldn't stand, sit, or use my hands for any length of time; I had no stamina and slept for about twelve hours every day; I often had acute pain that came and went for apparently no reason and chronic pain that could last for hours; I often could not get comfortable enough to go to sleep; because of the amount and kind of medication that I took, I developed a lot of digestive problems; and I often ran a low-grade fever for days, and sometimes, weeks at a time. Over the last two years, the vasculitis had become quite bad. I would often break out in large hives all over my body, and would get large spontaneous 'bruises' on my legs and arms that were not the result of any trauma and which took an unusual length of time to heal. I knew that this could not go on indefinitely, and so I had come to accept the fact that the length of my life was severely limited. I thought that I would just try to live what was left of my life the best that I could, but I still longed for the answers to those age-old questions. Even though I believed I would receive the answers when I died, I decided that I would ask for them while I still lived. So, one day, I imagined myself crying out to the universe for help. I remembered reading in a book that if you ever have a question, you should go to the library. Even if they don't have the answer, they can probably help you find it or where to go to get it. So, I went to the library to look for the answer. In the foyer, there is a bulletin board with flyers, announcements, etc., and shelves beneath. I looked all over the bulletin board, all over the shelves, and on the bottom shelf, underneath something else, there was a brochure: a bright blue brochure with oriental characters on it. As soon as I saw it, I knew it was the answer. It was a Falun Dafa pamphlet, and inside was a contact name and number. That was February 6th of 2000. I started practicing Falun Dafa within days. Within weeks, I was able to stop taking all of my medication, I became free of my illnesses, and I was eventually able to go back to work. These things were really just fringe benefits to me--after all, I was just looking for answers, not healing--but I became well just the same! The practice of Falun Dafa is very simple. It consists of five exercises--four standing, and one sitting meditation--and a set of three principles, which we believe to be the nature of the universe: Zhen (True), Shan (Good), and Ren (Endure). The exercises are gentle and relaxing, as well as energizing. The practice of implementing the principles-to be True, Good, and Endure--is simple, and yet amazingly powerful. You may notice that they are the same basic principles that Jesus taught, as well. At the very base level, Falun Dafa is learning how to be a better person in every aspect of life: at home, at work, and socially. At a higher level, the goal is the same as other practices: wisdom and enlightenment. Falun Dafa is not a religion: we don't worship any particular God, although we do recognize the existence of great enlightened beings throughout history such as Jesus, Sakyamuni, Lao Zi, Amitabha, etc.; we don't have temples; we don't have any type of administration; we don't have any rituals; there are no requirements; there is no membership; and we absolutely do not involve ourselves with money. If you want to learn about Falun Dafa, any practitioner can and will teach you the exercises for free, all the books can be downloaded from the internet for free, and we do not even accept donations. It's a pace-yourself kind of course--you practice when you want to, how often you want to, and for how long you want to. It is completely up to you whether you practice or not. Falun Dafa may very well be the largest spiritual movement in the history of the world. Right now, there are an estimated 100 million practitioners world-wide, with practitioners in over 50 countries, including the United States and China. All we want is to be good people and be able to practice our beliefs--our cultivation--without persecution. Speaking of those answers: I did find them, as well. I also found a peace of mind and a sense of being that I never could have imagined. My goal is still to live my life the best that I can, but I also want to share what I have found with others who may be able to benefit as well. I would also like to inform those who believe that we all have a basic human right to practice our beliefs without being persecuted about the situation for millions of Falun Dafa practitioners in China. Religion or Spirituality There is a natural tendency to asociate spirituality with religion, but they are very different. That I did not know before I researched and wrote "Spiritual Clarity." Religion is an organized system of beliefs in and the worship of God or gods. Spirituality is finding your own authentic self. Each individual needs to find their own way to spirituality and if that includes religion, so be it. Some people will be perfectly content to just believe as they are told, others will need more. Nothing is wrong with either path. Why Sit Here Until I Die? The bible tells a story about four men who sat at the entrance of the city's gate dying with leprosy, an incurable disease which causes terribly visible swelling and sores on the skin, only then to eat inward to the bones. Because of this contagious and incurable disease, these lepers sat outside of the city because they were not permitted to live within the city. These men were faced with a fatal disease, were outcasts, and were starving because of a feminine in the land. Such a hopeless life and no perceived future, would make the average person throw in the towel and just give up on life -- but not these men. Anamcara - Driving into Paradise "Let me take youdown to a town called Paradise." Pray Off Your Debts in 10 Days or Less - A Short Case Study Last Friday night, I met a Christian at a prayermeeting. He was rescued from war-torn Sudan and brought to the U.S. three years ago. He clearly loves to pray. He gushed facts. The True Self as the Hidden Man of the Heart The Apocalypse, or unveilling, is the name given to the Book of Revelation in the New Testament. The Book of Daniel is an apocalypse. So is Isaiah. The entire bible is an unveiling of the consciousness of man evolving from the human(OT) to the divine(NT). Love, Honor, and Obey Let's take a look at all these aspects. The bible speaks a great deal about loving, honoring, and obeying the Father. God, the Father off all creation, loves us so much, that he sent his only begotten son to save us from our sins. We have all heard this, but, "Do we love God enough to give him our all?" "Do we love him enough", to weather any storm and rely on Him for everything that we need. "Do, we show this to other people?"; I hope that we do. God, wants us to show him how much we love him. He, wants us to love him enough to worship him in everything that we do. Unfortunately, to many times we get caught up in our own personal problems, and forget that God is in control of the situation. We have all done this, but when we do this, it shows that we are not relying on God to take care of us. We try and do things our own way, with our own might. The bible says, "Greater is He that is in me, than He that is in the world". This is a very powerful statement, and a proclamation of God's sovereign power. To think, that he loves us so much, that He took all our sins and forgive them through His grace. Do we, as christians, have this kind of LOVE? Can we honestly say, that no matter what happens, "WE WILL LOVE HIM!" That, no matter what comes against us, we will stand firm in our faith, and love for God. This is not an option, we must always love Him and pray for His help. How To Fall With Style - The Art Of Sin Adam had it right when he covered himself with fig leaves. It's not that he thought it would cover his sin. He knew this was impossible. But he suddenly recognized his own weakness, and he doesn't try to battle it. Instead, he covers it. Out of sight, out of mind. But when God asks him why, he comes clean, accepts his punishment, and and continues to cover himself. Now that's how we're suppose to do it. |
