Discipled by the Kingdom of Heaven -- Becoming a KingdomScribe!
Jesus tells a story - a powerful story - that illustrates how God's Truth for today is always a new Word for today. And it also helps us understand that if all we're holding onto are "old truths", we're really holding onto no truths! (By the way -- if you want to read a summary of this teaching, just read the words in bold...it will actually make sense! ) Let's examine Jesus' story of the "Kingdom Scribe" to understand both its interpretation and its application to you as a Follower of Jesus Christ. The text is from Matthew 13. 51 & 52: And [Jesus] said to [His disciples], "Therefore, every scribe who has been discipled by the Kingdom of Heaven is like a man that is a householder, who, out of his treasure, brings forth things new and old. Jesus said to His disciples, "Therefore'..." Any time you see the word "therefore", always ask what the word is "there...for". "Therefore" is a connective word and it means that something that's said before the verse is going to affect the interpretation of that verse. This story occurs in the thirteenth chapter of Matthew. This chapter is often called the "Kingdom of Heaven" chapter. In this one place, Matthew gathers most of Jesus' teachings about the Kingdom of Heaven. Jesus' last story, in chapter thirteen, is the story of the scribe who is "discipled by the Kingdom of Heaven." We need to understand what a "scribe" was in Jesus' day. Some interpreters of this passage suggest that Jesus was only talking to people in His day who were "officially scribes". But He's talking to us all, because in today's Kingdom, you're called to be a scribe. Every one of you. We're all "scribes". So we need to understand what a scribe was in Jesus' day in order to see that part of our spiritual calling in today's Kingdom. Let me insert a prophetic word here: In this season, God is beginning to raise up the Teachers in the Body of Christ as never before. We can't possibly share with others the Kingdom of God without this gift coming to maturity in Christ's Body. But to say He's "raising up teachers" means more than that He's raising up the "Five-fold Teachers" of the Body - it means that the "Five-Fold Teachers" are raising up EVERYBODY as teachers and scribes in the Kingdom of God. The goal isn't only for YOU to be "well taught", but for you to "teach well"! Now back to our text - In Jesus' day, people depended on their "rabbis" to interpret and apply the Scriptures to their daily lives. If two people joined together in a contract, and one felt the other violated it, they might go to a rabbi for him to apply the Scriptures in resolving their dispute. But this was not the function, primarily, of a scribe. The scribe was a "teacher of the law". Scribes had great prestige and power and were seen as having esoteric or obscure spiritual knowledge that could only be passed on to committed students - disciples initiated into the mysteries of the Scriptures. But Jesus leaps from the natural understanding of a scribe to a new and supernatural understanding: This scribe "has been discipled by the Kingdom of Heaven!" My gosh! This is astounding! Some versions translate this as, "every scribe who has been instructed about the Kingdom of Heaven", but this is not what Jesus actually said. The way in which this is written in the original language is that this scribe is not discipled about the Kingdom of Heaven, but is discipled by the Kingdom of Heaven. There's another place in Matthew's Gospel that uses the same grammatical construction. It's in chapter 27, verse 57. In it, it says that Joseph of Arimathea had become a disciple of Jesus, not a disciple about Jesus. Joseph of Arimathea was discipled by Jesus, not about Jesus. Jesus discipled him. In the same way, this "scribe" Jesus is telling us about, hasn't been discipled about the Kingdom of Heaven but by the Kingdom of Heaven. Now don't let that easily slide by you. Grab hold of it - it's not at all the way we'd normally think about discipleship. What would seem more normal is the way it's used there in chapter 27. We think of people being discipled by Jesus or discipled by a pastor or discipled by a spiritual teacher. But here Jesus reveals that the Kingdom of Heaven itself disciples people! Come on! Look at this! This scribe "has been discipled by the Kingdom of Heaven"! Have you been "discipled by the Kingdom of Heaven"? Or have you only been "discipled about the Kingdom of Heaven"? Do you want to know for sure you're being "discipled by the Kingdom of Heaven"? Well, what's it mean to be "discipled by the Kingdom of Heaven"? A disciple is more than a mere student. A student says to his teacher, "I'm going to hear what you have to say, and consider whether it will be to my benefit to apply it." That's not what a disciple says. When a person becomes a disciple, he transfers his allegiance from self to the discipler. So here's what the disciple says to his "teacher": "I'm going to hear what you have to say, and obey it." God has designed the Kingdom of Heaven to enter into your life as a Teacher, a Discipler. If you transfer your allegiance to that which the Kingdom of Heaven imparts to you, you will be discipled by the Kingdom. And you'll be like the scribe in Jesus' story. In Jesus' day, scribes were discipled by other religious leaders. Paul's religious teacher was renowned and honored by all the Jews. His name was Gamaliel. Paul was discipled by Gamaliel. But after he met Jesus, he transferred his allegiance. He became a disciple of Jesus. Not only that, Paul became a disciple of the Kingdom of God. In other words, part of who Paul was in fulfilling his spiritual destiny was a man who committed his allegiance to the Presence of the Kingdom of God in his daily life. Let's look again at our little story: And [Jesus] said to [His disciples], "Therefore, every scribe who has been discipled by the Kingdom of Heaven is like a man that is a householder, who, out of his treasure, brings forth things new and old. The scribe (and not just any normal scribe, but the scribe who's been discipled by the Kingdom of Heaven itself!) Jesus compares the scribe to a "householder". The "householder" is the "master over his house". In some Bible versions, "treasure" is translated "storeroom". It refers to a safe place in which a homeowner could store his most valuable belongings. Why would a homeowner "go in and out" of his storeroom, bringing out things new and old? Presumably, it's to distribute the valuable things he has safely stored away for the use of his household. Possibly, he goes into the storeroom to bring out a gold-edged platter for a banquet that night, and maybe a string bag of spices for the preparing the feast. Now, the word for "storeroom" or "treasure", in the original Greek, is a lovely word: it's thesaurus. That's the word we use for collecting into one book, a "treasury" of all the possible synonyms and antonyms for every word in English. In the Bible, this word is translated "treasure". Jesus compares this "Kingdom Scribe" to a "homeowner". How is a "spiritual teacher" like a "homeowner" who goes "in and out of his treasury", fetching stuff? Also, whose "house" is the scribe in charge of? And what's in the "treasury" that the Kingdom Scribe is supposed to go in and out. Finally, what's the stuff the Kingdom Scribe is supposed to be bringing out, stuff old and new? If a homeowner stores spices and banquet platters in his "treasury", what does a "scribe" store? A scribe is a "teacher of Scripture", so what he goes into his treasury for are teachings - teachings both "old and new". Comparing the scribe to the homeowner implies that the scribe's teachings are his own property. Have you been "discipled by the Kingdom"? Have you stored up in the treasury of your heart, Kingdom teachings that are not only "old and new" but your personal truths? Or do you only have teachings stored up about Jesus and about the Kingdom, teachings that honestly are just the teachings of other "Kingdom Scribes" that you've adopted as your own? We're still comparing the "Kingdom Scribe" to a homeowner. Now, the homeowner's "treasury" is located in his "house". If the scribe's "treasury" is located in the scribe's "house", what is the Kingdom Scribe's "house"? "House" doesn't just refer to a structure of stone, sticks or straw. "House" is the "household" - the family and the family's possessions over which the householder has authority. And just as the homeowner brings treasures out of his storeroom for the sake of his household, so the Kingdom scribe brings forth things new and old, not for purely private or personal reasons, but in their capacity as teachers. What has God given you authority over? Your own life? Children? How about your community? How about the world around you? According to Jesus, if you are faithful with the smaller things over which you've been given spiritual authority, you'll be given cities over which to exercise your authority. Whatever you exercise authority over now, that's your "house", and whatever truths the Kingdom of God has discipled in you, are your truths to bring out into your sphere of authority. Finally, Jesus says these "truths" are "old" and "new". Most people read this phrase as if it speaks of several "truths" - some of which are "old truths" and some of which are "new truths". That's not a correct interpretation. The correct interpretation is staggering in its implications. According to the Expositor's Bible Commentary, what the Kingdom Scribe brings forth from his treasury are not "new things as well as old", which suggests the new things have been added to the old things. The Kingdom Scribe brings out of his treasury "things that are old and new." What's this? The new truths are not added to the old truths - there is but one Revelation, but since Jesus has ushered in the Kingdom of Heaven, the "old" truths are revealed in a "new" way. In the Kingdom, the "old" has become "new"! God has promised to reveal to us "the mysteries of the Kingdom". And yet every "mystery" revealed to us can in seed form be found as an "old" truth in the Old Testament. For example: we already know of the "truths" of David's Tabernacle, but in the Kingdom the significance of these truths - over 3,000 years old - is made new for us today. The truths of David's Tabernacle are both 3,000 years old and they're new this very day - if you hear the Wind of God's Spirit on this truth. Many people - especially in non-renewal congregations - are afraid of prophetic ministry. They're afraid that people who see themselves as prophets are going to start writing new Scripture like Joseph Smith did. It's important to notice that the Apostle Peter commands everyone who serves the Body by speaking gifts, are to "speak as God's oracle". "Oracle" means "God's mouthpiece". This fear that the "new" truths the Spirit brings to us every day can be contrary to that which has already been revealed in Scripture, is not at all unreasonable. But this fear can be dispelled by the fact that what the Holy Spirit speaks through us are in fact ancient truths, but ancient truths brought into our lives with a fresh Wind of illumination. They are "old and new". The Kingdom Scribe will go into his Treasury of Kingdom Truths, and from that Treasury will distribute to others Truths that are "old/new" -- ancient, and yet fresh for today. Every, successful, Kingdom Believer who is discipled by the Kingdom of Heaven, will find that the Truths of God's Word are new everyday. If you go back into the treasury of Kingdom Truths God has discipled within you, and you bring out a Truth - is it just an "old truth"? Is it yesterday's Manna? Then you're not being a faithful scribe of the Kingdom. Here's how you can go back into the Treasury and bring forth an "old truth" that's also a "new truth": Take an "old truth" you know, and go to the Father with it. Take it in your hand and say, "Heavenly Father - illumine this truth... I know what it's meant to others, I know what it's meant to me - but ever since I opened my eyes this morning, it's been a new day, and I need fresh Manna today (not old Manna); I need the Wind of the Spirit to blow across my understanding of this Truth, and see afresh." Bible and Kabbalah: The Hardening of Pharoahs Heart There is continuous creation, out of the new ideas discovered in the Torah. Praying Effectively ? Understanding How To Pray Part 2 In our last study, we looked at understanding prayer. In this study we will be focusing on how to pray effectively. What Is Perfect Love? Today, sitting in my pink armchair, reading about how a world-famous medium was able to communicate with the spirit world and our physical world and end the grief of those who had been left behind, I became even more aware of how love is the central theme of the universe itself. This was what the departed passed on to those who remained on earth. Their major regret was that they had not loved or expressed their love when they were alive. Fundamental Church Failures Every great human movement toward freedom, whether commercial, political or religious or a combination thereof, begins with the determination of concerned men and women to make life better by resolving recurring human problems. The Renaissance and the Age of Reason occurred through the efforts of talented people to end the brutal political, financial and religious abuses common within Medieval Europe. The Protestant Reformation and the revival of a personal redemptive relationship with God occurred because people rebelled against a corrupt Catholic hierarchy that was using the Spanish Inquisition to maintain their dominance over society and burning thousands of reformers alive in the name of God. Even the American Revolution of 1776 and the Mexican Revolution of 1917, erupted along fault lines between thoughtful people and a ruthless aristocracy that controlled virtually all the wealth. And while the new nation wasn't perfect, we spent the next two centuries getting more and more things right in the service of a more equitable society. That desire to serve people is collapsing now for one major reason. While the World is on Fire - Part Two Luke 19:49-19:46 This world is a tender box, of political, industrial and religious, differences. What is making the world that we call home, so violent? Religion is the biggest fuel to the coming fire than any other source. More people are dyeing today in the name of religion than at any other time in history. Suicide bombers, arson-est and snipers, to kill mame and destroy. All this in the name of religion. These are some of the causes, now here is the effect, in our coming future, what will you be doing while The world is on Fire? Luke 19:49, Jesus said, I am come to send fire on the earth, and what will I, if it already be kindled? There's a fire coming and you may be part of it. The Lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, an at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him asunder, and will appoint him his portion with the un-believers. Luke 19:46. Can you afford to set back and think that every thing will be OK., that you'll be all-right, Cant you smell the smoke before the fire? Are you going to be among them that don't believe are you in that number that Jesus talked about are you the lost one that he's still looking for to save, well are you? Ask yourself, will I be setting around, lost, when Jesus breaks the eastern sky and takes his children Home, will you say, Jesus, I never had the time to pray. The Bible states that you will, cry out to the rocks and mountains to fall on you to hide you from the face of the Lamb and from the wrath of God. Look at Revelations 16:8, And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun, and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire, and men were scorched with great heat. It doesn't say heat, it says, GREAT HEAT. This is part of the beginning of righteous Judgments of God upon the wicked and evil men upon the earth. Can you hide, can you run, can you survive? This is not a question to answer, but to avoid. Today its pretty outside, blue sky, gentile wind, the blue jays and blue birds are eating of the feed that I've left out for them . The sweet songs of the season are all around, I've put my babes to bed and life is good, the world is at peace. Whats that noise? This is what people will say the day the earth catches fire, this is the time of great deception, when Satan will tell the world that every thing is fine. One moment you'll be basking in the peace of a cool fall or summer day and then, fire and smoke, mingled with blood surrounds you. Rev 16:15, Behold, I come as a thief. Screaming, wailing and gnashing of teeth. You look around and huddle with fear, not caring any more for the money you used to take so highly, or the home, in flames, that you worked on Sundays not listening to the songs coming from the church, just down the street, the beautiful trees you planted all now ablaze going up with your home. Knowing in your heart, the position with the church as a decon, that you held with growing pride, was just a lie, something to make you look good, knowing that you were just fooling yourself, its all over in a heartbeat. Then you think, Ill run to the sea, it will be safe there, There's nothing there to burn, the water will cool my blisters that cover my flesh, thats what Ill do. Revelations 16:3. And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea, and it became as the blood of a dead man, and every living soul died in the sea. What then, where will you run, the mountains and islands are moved out of their place the grass is even on fire and the sea has turned to blood, what now, where to go, God help us all. You say, why are you telling us these things, why cant you say things that are nice to here? Look at Jude 22 and 23. And of some have compassion, making a difference, and others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire, hating even the garment spotted by the flesh. Pulling them out of the fire, pulling you, out of the fire, thats our goal. Were coming down to the wire, You are just a heart beat away from judgement. Don't wait to be put into the hands of the Living God, bent upon wrath and judgement. Don't let today slip away and here again the question, What will you be doing, While The World is on Fire. 7 Year Tribulation As you will see in the Scripture verses listed below, the Great Tribulation will last 7 years. At the midpoint of the Tribulation, the Antichrist will seat himself in the Temple of God that will have to rebuilt by the Jewish people. He will proclaim himself to be God. This event is called the abomination of desolation by the prophet Daniel. Jesus Himself specifically refers to this event in the New Testament. Jesus says that once this event occurs, that His people are to literally run for the hills. Jesus says that the last three and half years of the Tribulation set off by the abomination of desolation will be the worst tribulation and time of trouble that the world has ever seen. He says that had these days not been shortened by God the Father, that no flesh would be saved.I feel Jesus is implying that man probably would have destroyed the earth at or shortly after the Battle of Armageddon. The Antichrist starts to lose control of his empire. Other nations come against him in the battle of Armageddon. With the availability of nuclear weapons, my guess is that the Antichrist may have been willing to "hit the button" if he thought he was going to lose his empire. If he hits the button, chances are the other nations he is going to fight against will also be willing to hit the button, and you thus could end up in a full scale nuclear war. Helping Others - What Did Jesus Say? Helping others was something Jesus did on a dailybasis. He was constantly approached by people, but Healways found time to stop what He was doing to helpthose in need. This is a lesson we must learn if wewant to be anything like Jesus, our savior. Are You Doing the Good Part? Just compare yourself to these two sisters. Ministry Of Absence I was meditating the other day and contemplating the thousands of folks in the cemeteries who lived and died without making any impression upon anybody. No one hated them and no one loved them. They are not missed because no one ever knew they existed. They touched no one's life in any memorable way. How sad. Teach Your Child to Pray There are so many books out there on being a praying woman, or a praying wife, husband, nation, etc, but I'm not familiar with one about teaching my child to pray. A child that prays can have such an impact on his family, friends, and nation. If we as parents could teach our children this awesome phenonemon, we really could change the world one kid at a time. Serving Some people may ask how do we serve God and am I serving God correctly? Well lets look at what the Bible says about serving God. Lets start by knowing what a Blessing it is to serve him. Look at the Book of John 10:27 it says My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me is greater than all, no one can snatch them out of my Father's hand I and the Father are one. Now look at Jude 20 verse it says But you, dear friends, build yourselves up in you most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit. Keep yourselves in God's love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life. What Is True Egalitarianism? Why did the founding fathers of the United States consider egalitarianism to be such a necessary value? True egalitarianism is based on tolerance for differences. It is a principle of integrity much more than a rule of law. The antithesis of egalitarianism is judgment. Judging others does not define them. It defines you. Under Siege! This Article is the result of another hard night of realizing the fact that the Church is falling into deception. This was a particularly hard night for me. The first 15 paragraphs of this Article were written while I literally balled my sorry eyes out. (I just had a major eye transplant surgery, so that was not a comfortable experience). I was happy that my wife went to bed before the tears started. I just felt so sorry and sad for the things that are happening in America today, as what probably amounts to the greatest country the earth has ever seen is reduced to another fascist, police state, basking in religious bigotry. I am not marveled by that too much, I mean this is what the kingdoms of this world do, it's no big surprise. What Is The Most Important Righteous Requirement Of Gods Law? To live "under the law" is to live under theexpectation of fulfilling God's moral standardsthrough one's own human ability. However, rather thanexperiencing the joy of a clean conscience, wesometimes feel enslaved to legalism and guilt. The 7 Seal Judgements These next 3 articles are going to be extremely HARD HITTING. I am not going to pull any punches on what will be discussed in these articles. These article have to do with the JUDGMENTS AND WRATH OF GOD HITTING THIS EARTH FULL FORCE DURING THE 7 YEAR TRIBULATION - which will be the last 7 years of the world. A Powerful Word For Those Who Have Lost Loved Ones For what it is worth, I'd thought I'd pass this on to the rest of you. I wrote this article a few years ago. On TBN, they had a middle-aged couple on one of their talk shows that were really anointed. They had their own church and ministry - I can't recall where it was at. But part of their testimony was on the death of their young daughter. The Occult "Christianity posits the realization of human freedom not here on earth but only in the Kingdom of Heaven." (1) Fukayama tells us, and it seems to me he is interpreting what the dogma says; even though it fits his own slave and master concept taken by his evil predecessors. Right as he may be about Christianity, he is not right about the teaching of Jesus. Well, what good is there in such a belief system? It encourages no growth or potential for freedom while you are alive. It gives no insight to actual knowing of what exists hereafter, except through faith in someone telling you what is right. How can anyone accept such utter hogwash? Are we to be enslaved to such a cosmogony while alive? God grows too, and he would be dead if he didn't. All things around us in nature say change is a good thing. Catholic Hierarchy: The Nobiliary Element in the Catholic Church It seems to me that some of the oldest still surviving hierarchies are those of the nobility, the Church and the military. What is perhaps not commonly known is how they correspond with each other. Below is an outline of the correspondence between the catholic hierarchy of the Holy Roman Catholic Church and that of the nobility. No Word Yet on Pedophiles With New Catholic Pope The new Pope is not expected to break ranks with his fellow Cardinals or Army of Priests any time soon and come clean on the issues of child molestation and pedophilia. We all know and it is no secret that Catholic Priests around the world are pedophiles and child molesters. Not all but enough to be alarming as the problems are so wide spread it might be safer to take your kids and drop them off for the weekend at 'Never Neverland Ranch' then to leave them alone with the local Priest. Some argue and defend the church others know these things have been going on for over two thousand years. Beauty Some people say beauty is only skin deep, others say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I like to wonder who proclaim beauty and who decided what is or what is not beauty. Let's see what the Bible says. Look at Eccclesiastes 3:11 it says He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from the beginning to the end. I know that there is nothing better for men than to be happy and do good while they live. That everyone may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all his toll-this is the gift of God. I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so that men will revere him. |
