Do It Now!
"At the end of our lives we never regret at the things we failed at but at the things we hope for but never attempted." Richie Dayo Johnson Few months ago, I went to Ashburnham Place, a Christian conference and prayer centre set in glorious East Sussex countryside for church groups, retreats, holidays and conferences with one of my mentors Joe De Souza, a top rated motivational speaker. He asked me, "if five frogs were attempting to jump out of a river, after 2 minutes how many of them would be left in the river?" I answered him by saying five frogs. The reason being that they are attempting to jump out of the river and have not jumped out of the river yet; they only attempted. The five frogs will remain in the river if they only attempt to jump and never actually jump. Likewise, a goal will be a mere castle in the air if no attempt is taken to actualise it. If Thomas Edison, the inventor of electricity, only had the dream without attempting to bring it to life, there wouldn't be electricity today. Many dreams have being destroyed in the realm of imagination without any attempt to bring it to life for fear - fear of failure and fear of rejection. When we only hope or wish and never do anything to actualise it, we are simply killing the inner ability we have in bringing such goals to pass. It is when we attempt to do something about our dreams that we discover the inner capability we have in seeing it through. It is amazing how this happens, but the truth is that as time goes on, other ways of maintaining our dreams unfold, but we need to first take the bold step of attempting it. Though man is limited, but the Giver of the vision is limitless. He has given diverse visions and different ways of actualising them. We only need to take a step by attempting to do something about it. The good thing about 'attempting' is that if we fail, which is inevitable, we are invariably exposed to different ways in which we could maximise such goals. Failures open our eyes to new ways of achieving our goals, if persistence and perseverance are set in motion. When Thomas Edison had the dream of the electric light bulb, he attempted it and failed 999 times; but his persistence to actualise his dream made him triumph and today we can read about him. You will never be celebrated for a dream you only wished for, but for a dream you imagined, attempted and achieved. I am a man of action. People who are successful always take action. Anyone who has ever been successful has done something. Think about it! Even someone who is a successful 'thinker' (as opposed to a 'doer') is usually known because they did something that tells us about their success. Sir Richard Branson founded Virgin Atlantic; Tony Ryan founded Ryanair; The Wright Brothers built the world's first aeroplane; Richie Dayo Johnson founded Richmond Johnson Academy, Stephen Covey wrote "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" and "The 8th Habit: From Effectives to Greatness" and Thomas Edison invented the electric light bulb. The list is endless. What they all have in common is ACTION. They did something with conviction! They took action and that is the reason we can talk and read about them today. Just how essential is action? Let me describe it this way. Action is the great separator. It separates the achievers from the non-achievers. It separates the rich from the poor. It separates go-getters from mere dreamers. It separates the winners from the quitters. On the whole, it separates successful people from the unsuccessful people. Nobody plans to fail, but many fail to plan. The greatest waste of time in our lives is having no idea of what it is we are supposed to accomplish. You must make a list of what you want to do every single day before starting the day. Do not start the day until you have mapped it on paper. This will make your day more organised and enable you get more work done. Prioritise your day and time. Make a sequentially numbered list; prioritise your work and take action on the most important item first. Develop a deep sense of priority and urgency. Do something each day that will move you in the direction of your most important goal. Develop the discipline of doing something every day that will move you forward and towards your desired goal. You will be astonished at how much you accomplish when you adhere to this routine everyday. The person who is determined to achieve maximum success learns that progress is made one step at a time, not all at once. A house is built one brick at a time, just as every big accomplishment is a combination of a series of little accomplishments. Do it now! Its a Habit Do you sometimes have the feeling that you're running into the same obstacles over and over again? Many of my conflicts have the same feel to them, like "Hey, I think I've been here before," but I can't figure out how I wound up in the same place. The situation is different, but the conflict feels the same. How to Get Motivated and Have Industrial Strength Self-Motivation It is not your fault if popular self-help courses have never worked for you over the long term. A Turning Point 19 years ago, I was a young working mother at 28, independent and working for a prestigious company, until circumstances made me choose between family and career. After going through weighing my options, I chose to become a full-time Homemaker because I believed that family should come first if the situation would permit. Taking The Leap Every four years, February gives us a whole 24 hours of bonus footage to add to our year. Many people take this opportunity to "do something special" with their extra day. But why wait for Leap Day? Why not celebrate the "leaps" and risks we take every day when we venture outside of our comfort zone or work to improve our lives? Of course change, especially life-altering change, is bone-shakingly frightening sometimes. The whole concept is fraught with a veritable minefield of "what ifs" that can be hard for us to see and get past in order to reach the destination point where our dreams lie. So I offer you the following "what ifs" along with some answers to help you take that leap, whatever it may be, and land safely on the other side! Making Excuses I edited and re-edited my article. I had to make sure it was just so. Then I procrastinated on writing the query letter to get my article published. The house needed cleaning, I ran out of stamps, the letter wasn't quite right. Delivering the query letter to the mailbox took another week what with family, meetings and such. I had good excuses why I wasn't actively trying to get published. But, the real reason was that I was afraid I wasn't going to be good enough. Does Your Battery Need Recharging? A technical support person in a pager company tells the story of a customer call to the customer service center from a man who repeatedly complained he was being paged by "Lucille." He was instructed that he would have to call her and tell her to stop paging him. 4 Barriers to Overcome For Growth As we begin a new year, it's natural to reflect a bit on what we really want out of the next 12 months. Whatever your resolutions are, they all boil down to one thing- you want GROWTH! Congratulations! You've taken the first step towards seeing positive results. Celebrating the Couch Potato Ah, the couch potato, that icon of American pop culture values. Isn't that the life? Why would anyone want to exert extra energy to be productive when you can simply plop down on the couch in front of the telly and enjoy all that delicious snack food and a cool one. Why worry about a yard that needs mowing, a sink full of dishes or that overflowing garbage can. They will all be there tomorrow or even next week - you can take care of them then, or not. Going The Extra Mile There is one sure way to get what you want in life, but few people actually do it. Put this practice firmly into your day to day business activities and you will have an advantage over the rest of the crowd. Dismantle Self Imposed Limits Round about us is an invisible box that we have created around ourselves, which defines our horizon. Things within this box are within reach, achievable, see-able, touchable, believable, feasible, possible. Outside this box is a region beyond our wildest imagination. Things in this domain are too much to handle or contemplate. They are beyond reach. Don't even think about it, and we don't. Journaling - A Tool for Healing and Growth The word "journal" comes from the French. It dates back to the 14th century and means daily. As recently as April 26, 1999, "Newsweek" magazine ran an article entitled "Pen, Paper, & Power. Confessional Writing can be Good for You." Don?t Let Motivation Cause You to Fail Yesterday my teenage son Matt came home with a less than stellar report card. (Yes, even peak performance experts sometimes have trouble motivating others.) Now Matt is by no means stupid. The reason he got poor grades is because he did not do the work that was required for some of his classes. Why didn't he do the work? According to him, he didn't feel motivated to do it. After having a loud discussion with him (translation: I was ranting and raving), I realized that Matt is no different than many people in his erroneous idea about motivation and success. Do It Now! It is a natural human instinct to find a partner. Someone who we can grow and expand with, someone we can have a family with, someone we can spend the rest of our life with. Instant Willpower We've all heard people say "I have a system". Ever since I was a little girl and watched my mother put together a grocery list, I've known -- and used -- the power of systems. The First Step Today is an anniversary of sorts for me. Three years ago today, I publicly launched Tomorrow's Edge after years of getting ready, talking about how I was someday going to do it, and researching everything but advertising! It was a huge first step in the middle of a bunch of first steps that I had taken up to that point. Naturally, it fell flat on it's face because of my lack of education in the marketing area. So, here I am three years later, better educated, dusted off, boot straps pulled up, repeating that first step. I take a deep breath, psyche myself up, wiggle my toes a bit, bend my knee, lift my foot, and sit back down with another cup of coffee?. Maybe in a minute or so. Just Do It! If you run a business like I do, you probably have limited time to do all the things you need to do each day. In order to make sure I get to exercise each day, I have to get up BEFORE the chickens do ? between 4:30 AM and 5AM. Every single time I have to tell myself, "Kim, JUST DO IT!" I don't always want to either but I do it. 9 Great Ways To Change Your Life By Changing Your Motivation Style If you are not as productive as you'd like or tend to procrastinate, you can become motivated by changing your personal style. The trick lies in making the activities you put off more interesting, easier, and less unpleasant. |
