Real Life Self-Defense Starts From...
"Nicky Bats" was an "old school" kinda guy. He was "street" thru and thru. He was a hard bark tough as nails S.O.B. He was a survivor. His definition of "success" in life was dying peacefully at a ripe old age of natural causes, not dying on some frozen blood-soaked battlefield in Korea after being over run by a human swarm of Chi-Coms. Not winding up in a landfill dead of lead poisoning and not dying in some filthy gutter with your innards spilling out from a gaping knife wound. I once asked Nicky what he thought the "secret" to real world survival was. Now "Nicky Bats" WAS the "go to guy" on matters concerning "reality based" violence. He boiled it down to these words, words which carry a GREAT deal of wisdom???????.."Dealing with most people is like dealing with a jackass. Even a dumb as a stump jackass has a brain, but it all depends on which end you're doing business with. Pick the wrong end and pretty soon you'll find yourself standing knee deep in a pile of stinking donkey s@#t." Nicky Bats had a REAL dislike for hard guys, tough nuts, and blustering blowhards. Nicky called these types "hard boiled eggs"?????.seemingly tough on the outside, but easily cracked and all yellow and mushy on the inside. If you didn't know Nicky Bats, by the time he "introduced" himself, it was usually too late. It took me awhile, but I eventually realized that what "Nicky Bats" was saying was that REAL survival was rooted in the ability to fully understand human nature and understand how that knowledge could really be put to use to "work the mark", as he would say. So-called "self-defense" at its core has far more to do with watching, studying and understanding all of the varied components of "human nature" than it does with ANY set of "techniques", "system" or "method". EVERY single interaction with another individual CAN become a "self-defense" scenario or situation. Think about this. HOW many times during the course of a day, a week or a month does someone run SOME type of "grift" with YOU as the intended "mark". From the subtle to the overt; from the "sneaky" and the "backhanded" to the OPENLY hostile, aggressive and potentially violent; these actions range from the snide comment or wiseass crack all the way up to and including a full blown lethal physical assault. AND they occur EVERYWHERE all the time in EVERY SINGLE "interaction" you have with someone that winds up with you muttering to yourself "what an ASS" or worse, you have in point of fact just engaged in a scenario of "self-defense". Every time your head pounded, your heart raced, your guts churned, your teeth gritted, or you clenched your fist in anger because of another's actions you have just experienced the "jump street" of SELF-DEFENSE. In the same way that we strive to deal with violent PHYSICAL attack, we should strive to "know" how to deal with these less overt intrusions into our personal space and lives. REMEMBER the MOST subtle of actions can open the door for the most dangerous of encounters and the MOST VIOLENT of outcomes! The ANSWER lies right there in the "philosophy" of "Nicky Bats". From the simply annoying and peevish traits of the human condition RIGHT up to the MOST detestable, ugly and violent actions the ANSWER remains pretty much the same. IT'S THIS SIMPLE: Realize from JUMP STREET that you are dealing with the WRONG END of a JACKASS, that NOTHING GOOD will stem from this and that sooner rather than later you are most assuredly going to be CRAPPED UPON. So the question BEGS to be asked????????WHY in the world are YOU dealing with the rear end of a JACKASS in the FIRST PLACE! There any number of "cues" that will alert an astute observer of "human nature" to the intent, mind-set and type of character you are dealing with. USE THAT. Don't molly-coddle. Don't make excuses. Don't "look inward". Don't equivocate. DON'T BE SUCKERED and DON'T BE STUPID. If it looks like a JACKASS and it ACTS like a JACKASS??????????????..well you can figure out the rest. Never PLAY the other mans game. Never fall for the "grift". NEVER allow yourself to set up as a "mark". REAL SELF-DEFENSE AIN'T JUST ABOUT KNOWING HOW TO STOP THAT BASEBALL BAT DESCENDING UPON YOUR SKULL! IT IS FIGURING OUT WHY YOU DIDN'T SEE IT COMING IN THE FIRST PLACE! And if you're wondering about "Nicky Bats", as I just found out earlier this evening, his wish came to fruition, he's finally a "success". RIP my dear Brother. In a world of "hard boiled eggs", the "ones that count", will remember you as the REAL DEAL! ©2005 www.thetruthaboutselfdefense.com Carl Cestari began his study of the martial arts with judo at the age of 7 under the direction of Yoshisada Yonezuka. Aikido Philosophy: An Oriental Concept of Energy, Self, and Mind Preface Bogu Training About four years ago Carl recommended we start using the Bogu during our kumite (sparring practice). This method was developed in Okinawa and then found its way into mainland Japan and eventually to the U.S. where only a few clubs still do this. And even in those clubs, only a few members do it. I know there is other equipment out there that looks similar and I have used most of what's available. But it does not provide you with nearly the same overall effect that the bogu does. Rules in bogu training ? Any punch, any kick, save foot stomps, a strike to the spine and to the back of the neck. Throws and leg kicking is certainly allowed. Use, dare I say, your commonsense. Samurai Sword Basics, A Brief History Capturing the spirit of old Japan and recognised by its deadly curvature, the samurai sword is widely recognised throughout the world as the most deadly of all Japanese weaponry. Although gaining modern fame and notoriety in modern epic cinema in such films as The Last Samurai and the Kill Bill series by Quentin Tarantino, samurai swords have long being an iconic symbol of Japan and its history. Dermot Michael (Pat) ONeill Dermot O'Neill was born in 1905 in County Cork, Ireland. As a teenager he traveled to China, and settled in Shanghai. In 1925, at the age of twenty he joined the Shanghai Municipal Police. This police force comprising of 9000 active and reserve officers was task with bringing law and order to the International Settlement. Samurai Swords ? Choosing a Sword to Buy It's undeniable that a well placed and mounted samurai sword or samurai sword set looks fantastic and an ads character to any room of the home, but is it worth spending upwards of $650 on such a sword or sword set? This all depends on your reasons for buying a samurai sword. Elements of Unarmed Combat Custom build your own personal "system": A Great Question! It's a question that we went back and forth with for awhile ourselves many moons ago. The "how" and "why" of our conclusions may be of some interest. Whether or not anyone agrees with them, well at the least you'll fully understand the basis for them. Martial Arts Traditionally, people trained in Martial Arts in order to utilized their skills as a form of attack and defense in both armed and unarmed combat. Today, people train in Martial Arts in order to keep fit, as a form of meditation, to learn self-discipline and as a competitive sport. Although Western culture associates Martial Arts with Asian countries, many countries developed their own Martial Arts as a form of military defense, prior to modern technology. There are many different styles of Marital Arts, such as Ju Jitsu, Tai Chi and Karate. All styles of Martial Arts follow a system of teaching. During teaching, a student is taught a series of forms. These forms, once learnt, help the student to develop a technique that they can then utilize when needed. There are also different levels of training that a student can progress through, once they have mastered the first level. All students must study under a Master of the particular Martial Art that they wish to learn with the hope of one day becoming also a Master. This is the traditional way in which the skills all Martial Arts has been handed down over the generations. Catholic Self Defense Note: I wrote this essay regarding the development of Tekkenryu jujutsu. However, I think it is applicable for all methods of self defense. It may also explain why martial arts are the way they are. The Test "Will this work so that I can use it instinctively in vital combat against an opponent who is determined to prevent me from doing so, and who is striving to eliminate me by fair means or foul". ~ Rex Applegate British Aikido Board National Nepotism Seminar For many years The British Aikido Board (BAB) have shown no interest whatsoever in the true history of British Aikido, to be fair to the BAB, they have shown a great deal of interest and support for the false history of British Aikido for which they have now publicly apologised, the apology by the chairman Mr Vincent Sumpter can be viewed on www.geocities.com/britishaikido. Nuts & Bolts of Self Defense Fundamental "Nuts & Bolts" training for close combat should be directed at dealing with the extremes. That is a life and death struggle for survival, i.e. worst case scenario. Restraint, control, and use of force scenarios and methods are peripheral to this core training. In other words train to deal with these beliefs at the forefront: The enemy is quite willing and capable of killing you - there are multiple threats - they are armed - the assailant(s) are bigger, stronger, faster than you and they CAN FIGHT! Can it get any worse that that? Now add this to the mix: You are physically/mentally exhausted - ill or injured - caught by absolute surprise - may have to protect others as well - no viable avenue of E&E. Applying Law of Gravity to Judo In judo it is important to throw your opponent by making use of his loss of balance, the law at work here is the law of gravity. We know that Sir Isaac Newton discovered the law of gravitation by seeing an apple fall from a tree. All bodies in the universe attract one another. For instance, the earth attracts the bodies near and around it. In turn they also pull the earth. 5 Steps to Choosing the Right Martial Art for You One of the questions I get asked most frequently, in several different variations is about which martial art an individual should study. Generally which martial art, and more importantly which school to choose are fundamental decisions someone should make. My answer is usually something along the lines of, "choose the school and the system that you are going to stick with and stay with it for the rest of your life." Tai-Chi for the Masses--and Others Kuang Ping was the T'ai-chi set favored by Yang Lu-Chan, the man who brought forward the "Yang" style in the mid-1800's, now so popular throughout the world. Kuang Ping is what the man trained with himself. The popular "Yang" set was/is something for the masses--not for the aficinado, the athlete, the martial artist. Does It Hurt When I Do This? Let me tell you something. I don't bruise too easily. You guys know after years of Wrestling, Football, Karate, Jujutsu and Judo- you develop resistance to those types of things. Well at least I That's what I thought?Every time I work out with Carl Cestari, I am left with reminders of our time together. I have to tell you, the day after filming the Combat Jujutsu Series I had bits and pieces bruised or missing!!! Tae Kwon Do As A Means To Stay In Shape Becoming a martial artist is a fanatastic method of fitness. While there are many martial art forms to choose from, taekwondo is clearly the most beneficial, and the most practical. And while many realize the benefits of such exercise, the simple fact is most have no idea how to begin. The Acronym That Saved My Life Frequently, I get asked about certifications, systems or methods. We made a decision a long time ago of purposely staying away from things like this. |
