Spring Cleaning: How To Do It In Your Business To Make More Room For Success
With the arrival of Spring, I decided to get outside and into my garden.I had neglected to do some basic maintenance during the previous months and wondered if my plants suffered any permanent damage as a result. My flower bed was full of dead foliage and there wasn't a sign of new growth anywhere.I spent a considerable amount of time removing the dead foliage in order to allow room for the new growth to emerge. I was pleasantly surprised to see new growth already emerging once I removed all of the dead foliage.I gave the plants plenty of water and fertilizer as a final step, and moved on to other yard work tasks. A couple of hours later, I looked at my plants and was amazed at how much they had grown. They had literally doubled in size!I was expecting to see some results, but not so much in such a short amount of time. After assuring myself that I wasn't seeing things,I realized what had happened and why, andhow it relates to Marketing your Business. Here are the lessons from my garden: 1. Look At What You Have Already Planted: How are you currently marketing your business?Think about who you are marketing to andthe results you are getting from your efforts. Are you getting the results you want, such as more clients and increased revenue? 2. Remove The Dead Foliage: If you are not getting the results you wantfrom your current marketing efforts,it is time to look at what is working and what is not. Once you determine what is not working, you need to remove it and replace it with more of what is working or add something newthat will work for you. If something is dead, it can not grow.Stop focusing your time and moneyon marketing that is killing your business. 3. Prepare For Growth: Once you have removed what is not working, you will have more room to focus on improvingand growing your business. Analyze what is working for you and why. Then do more of it and add other strategiesthat will give you similar results. Create systems for your business based on effective marketing in order to ensurecontinuous growth. It may seem like magic when the growth suddenly appears in your business, but it will actually be the result of simply removing what is not working for youand replacing it with effective marketing. The magic is in watching your business bloom! Copyright 2004 Black Unicorn Communications, Inc. Target Market - 3 Big Reasons You Need To Know Yours Rule Number One when writing marketing materials is "Know Your Target Market." There's a lot of foundational work to do before you ever put a word on paper but this is the place to start. Does The Market Really Want It? At the very heart of any successful marketing strategy is the determination of what your present and prospective customers need, want, and desire. You have to find out what they want before you try to sell it to them. Never make the mistake of investing a lot of money into a product or service you want to sell before you understand how much demand really exists on the part of the customer. What You Need in Your Marketing Calendar Marketing calendars are used by many businesses to help keep sales pipelines full of new prospective customers. Small businesses may just keep a simple calendar with handwritten items on the dates that marketing efforts need to be completed. These items might include attending a trade show, sending out an email campaign, or placing a buy for a magazine advertisement. Larger corporations typically have a more detailed marketing calendar planned out a year in advance. Regardless of the size of the business a good marketing calendar does have to have some key elements to assure the monthly activities in which the business is investing are paying off. The Bare-Bones Basics Of Multi-Level Marketing Multi-level marketing is the biggest growth industry in the 1980's. It is the industry that has made corporate giants of Amway, Shaklee, Mary Kay and Herbalife. It has been termed as the last true rags-to-riches opportunity left in North America, and its ability to bring enormous incomes to almost anyone is legend. In fact, it is expected to make more new millionaires by 1990 than any other industry, and soon after will be the single most popular method of bringing new products to the consumer. Whats In a Business Card? Over the years as I have attended trade shows, networking meetings, chamber events and more; I have noticed a few things about the successful and the not so successful. First of all, do you have a business card?If you belong to a large corporation, you were probably issued business cards as a matter of course, almost as if it was a company perk. If you are in a small or home-based business, chances are you, personally, made the effort to get business cards, which entailed design, print and distribution. So if you went to all of the trouble of acquiring them, you should use them to your advantage. Here are a few tried and true rules for marketing with your card.1. Never leave home without the cards. I have stopped for coffee already and had someone ask me for a card because they saw my car sign as I pulled into the local coffee shop lot. If you want people to discredit you as a businessperson, all you have to do is say "Oh sorry I forgot my cards today." I have even been to trade shows and fellow exhibitors were walking around without cards. You have not only lost an immediate opportunity to market your business, but you look like an amateur who doesn't deserve the business.2. Is the information correct? The reality is that sometimes we change our contact information. If you know that there will be changes in the near future, then limit the number of cards you have printed. Do not, scribble out and hand write information on your card. Back to "Can anyone say amateur?" I said that to someone once and his reply was, "yes but business cards are expensive." That says two things to me: 1) he didn't shop around for a good price and 2) AMATEUR! The idea is to attract business not scare it away.3. Does the card say what you want it to say? What message are you trying to get across? When designing a business card, think about the placement of information on the card. Is the key information in a prominent place on the card? Does the design work with the rest of your company image? Your business card should be an extension of your company just like your logo, stationery, checks, signage, website and more. They should all get across the same message and design.4. Can prospective clients contact you easily with the information provided on your card? This is a big one!Is your website up to date?Do you check your email at least once a day? (and respond!)Is your email address professional (not mycompany@genericfreeemail.com)Is your voice mail message clear, concise and professional? In this day of technology everyone assumes you must have email and a website for your business to be successful. This is not necessarily true. If you do not conduct business via email or internet then do not put that information on your card. No matter what you use, the key is to be accessible.5. Are you marketing with your business card? Keeping them in your pocket is a waste of time and money. Be clear about who your target client is. When you see an opportunity slip in your business card. Do not be rude and pushy, but confident that the person could benefit from your services. If you are not sure that your business card is getting you where you want, market test it. Give it to some friends and colleagues and ask them for their opinions. If your friends are not going to be honest with you, then try "strangers." At the next event you attend ask some people what they think of your design. |
