The Marketing Secret Every Child Knows
Little Kids Ask Until They Get What They Want. Mom, Mom, Mom, Mom, can I have an ice cream? Can I, Can I, Can I, Can I? Please, Please, Please, Please. I'll be good for a whole year. I promise. Just give me a dollar. I won't ask again for a long time. Pleaseeeeee! Regular, repeated mailings are the way to create big predictable results. When you mail every 30 days for a year you will cause a dramatic growth in your business. People respond to repetition. If you are a parent you know how hard it is to refuse repeated requests for an ice cream or a desperately wanted toy. If you are not a parent, I'm sure you remember asking, even begging for a toy, a treat or permission to stay up past your bedtime, until your parents finally gave in. Your customers and prospective customers are similar. They need to be asked repeatedly too. Who You Should Ask. You should be asking 3 groups of people to do one of 3 things: 1. The first group is your house customer list (your own list of existing customers). You should be asking your existing customers repeatedly to contact you about some offer you make to them for your products and services. A clear offer with an easy way to contact you should be made, like: "We will give you 5000 full color postcards for $389, simply give us a call at 800-628-1804 to set up getting your postcards." Or some other offer you reasonably believe they will be interested in based on your personal knowledge of them and preferably based on their actual previous buying behavior. 2. The second group is your house prospect list (prospects you have caused to inquire about your products and/or services through your own marketing efforts). This group of people is interested in your service but hasn't made the decision to go for it yet. They will be the most likely to respond to a special when you offer it to them. 3. The third group of people are people who can reasonably be expected to be interested in your products and/or services, but who have never purchased anything from you and have never inquired about your products and/or services either. The likely reason they haven't contacted you is that they don't know that you even exist. You remedy that by contacting them with a series of postcards offering free information about how they can benefit from your products and services. If this list of people is properly selected and if you make an offer that a reasonable person will find very, very difficult to refuse, then your response rate will be high. That is the whole game in a nutshell. Create or get a list of people who have demonstrated they are interested in the type of product or service you offer. AND/OR Get a list of people extremely likely to be interested even if they haven't already proved they are by buying from you or one of your competitors. Once you have these lists of people contact them with postcards which offer them the benefits of your products and services and keep making them offers until they inquire and/or buy from you and then ask them to buy more on a regular basis. If you do what you have just read about you will have more business than you can shake a stick at. You will have a smile on your face just like the little kid with a belly full of ice cream he/she convinced mom to buy. Steve Conn is a Marketing Consultant. Do You Know What To Write? Developing the Unique Selling Proposition The "Unique Selling Proposition" advertising campaign was developed by Reeves in 1961. Reeves proposed that marketers offer products different from their competitor' offerings by developing products that have a special formula, design, or feature. The product or service being marketed must be unique and important to the prospect. Finally, the USP can be an overt statement or implied through different marketing mechanisms. Service Marketing - A Relationship Building Approach Can we imagine a place in the world today without a marketing activity. It looks remote. When we all move from one place to the other, we need an interactive or a Communicative Response System (CRS) to facilitate a marketing activity and enable the market to respond. When this Communicative Response System (CRS) eventually reaches a market, there are buyers and sellers waiting to respond. How to Handle Jargon at Your Web Site - and Why If you sell a technical product or service, you probably know you have jargon at your web site - specialized terminology that the average person doesn't understand. While jargon does help you communicate precisely withpeers, it seriously gets in the way if potential and actualcustomers aren't as conversant with it as you are. The Day I Learned to Start Saying No It was the fall of 1998 when I had just started my first business as a marketing communications writer. Most of my clients hired me for newsletters, brochures, and sales materials, but I would get the occasional request for something different. At the time I was too naive to consider saying "no" to any project that didn't fit me perfectly. Clever Headlines Usually Flop! Are You Being Too Clever For Your Own Good? Copywriters that try to be clever, humorous, abstract, or use double entendre with their headlines and ads will normally find that they flop and are thus a waste of both time and money. Many of the Super Bowl ads fall in this category. While they are often funny to watch, most people don't remember what company the ad was promoting. Dont Advertise Your Business - Market It! Too many business owners believe that marketing their business means just paying for a few ads. What few understand is that Advertising is not the same as Marketing. Too many clients have come to us only after they have wasted large sums of money by copying their competitors with "me too" advertising. And the media and advertising agencies love it. When you approach an advertising agency, their mission will be to convince you to spend your entire marketing budget with them, not to help you devise a marketing strategy for your business which will look at all available marketing options, not just advertising. D.A.N.C.E. With Me Recently, a client asked what he could do to help my business, but I wasn't ready with the answer. A lot of us probably miss these opportunities because we don't think through what we need and how to respond when someone offers to help promote us. Differentiate or Die Sounds pretty harsh, doesn't it? Well, I can tell you from personal experience with both my own business and with my clients, "differentiate or die" is not an exaggeration. Whether you're a small one-person shop or a large government agency, solvency and the future of your business rely on you standing out in a competitive marketplace. 5 Tips for Getting the Most out of Exhibiting at Trade Shows Exhibiting at trade shows can be a cost-effective way to generate business, whether you are a new entrepreneur or have been in business for years. Some exhibitors, however, do not experience the success of others. The success of the exhibitor is the responsibility of the exhibitor, not the trade show organizer. The organizer's responsibility is to promote the show, fill the exhibits and fill the show with large numbers of visitors. Being at the right show for your business is the first step. Attracting visitors to your exhibit is the next step and may be a challenge. Once the visitor is there, getting them to buy your product or service, or agree to a future contact is another challenge. Bring to mind a time when you either participated at a trade show or were a visitor at a trade show what attracted you to an exhibit, and what turned you off? 4 Easy Ways to Get Free Marketing Exposure Are there really ways you can get valuable marketing exposure without spending any money?
