The Seven Cs: Partnership Danger Signs - The 4th C: Cumulative Money Problems
A series of articles exploring the seven critical areas that can indicate a partnership is in trouble. The 4th C: CUMULATIVE MONEY PROBLEMS Conflicts over money are very high on the list of reasons that 70% of business partnerships fail. I'm not referring necessarily to lack of money. The damage to business partnerships stem from the fact that each of us have different attitudes about money and therefore handle it in different ways. The most hopeful scenario is that differences have been discussed openly at the outset of the partnership and are continually a topic reviewed with level heads. Most often that is not the case. Here is a sample list of the types of problems businesses run into around money where partners can have very opposing views:
The money issues in business that accumulate over the course of time are based on many factors, some personal, some internal to the business and some on outside forces beyond anyone's control. Bill and Vincent were investing in a new business. Vincent was unemployed with limited funds, so at the outset Bill did the financing. There was growing tension between them because of this. Bill felt he had more right to make decisions. He also had a subtle way of belittling Vincent because of it. How could such interaction be a good basis for a new business? They were wise enough to seek coaching, during which I helped Vincent spell out the behavior that was not obvious to Bill. Vincent on his own was too uncomfortable to communicate clearly how he was feeling. When it was out in the open in our coaching sessions they were able to make some changes so Vincent was able to contribute more in ways that made him feel respected. They also set some goals and deadlines for adjustments in the financial contributions. Open communication in this scenario prevented problems from escalating into major conflict which could have ultimately ended the partnership. Partnership agreements can go a long way to spell out how money decisions will be made. However, partnership agreements are not very efficient in predicting how personalities will react in various unforeseen situations and crises. Protect your partnership as much as possible. Choose your partner wisely. Choose your business wisely. Engage a coach early in the process. Here are some of the ways it will pay a high return on your investment:

Develop Your Managers and Keep Your Staff Following on from the last edition of The Organised Times where we spoke about developing the people in your business, this week we're focussing on the importance of the continual development of your managers. Office Politics Office politics! It's just another way of saying: "The employees are not getting along!" Romford Accountants: Accountancy Firm Roles and Responsibilities If you own or operate a business in the UK, especially in Romford, then you know how time consuming it is to not only run your business but to also make sure all of your financial bases are covered. Making Your Workers Your Partners There is an inherent conflict between owners and managers of companies. The former want, for instance, to minimize costs - the latter to draw huge salaries as long as they are in power (who knows what will transpire tomorrow). For companies traded in the stock exchanges, the former wish to maximize the value of the stocks (short term), the latter might have a longer term view of things. In the USA, shareholders place emphasis on the appreciation of the stocks (the result of quarterly and annual profit figures). This leaves little room for technological innovation, investment in research and development and in infrastructure. The theory is that workers who are also own stocks will avoid these cancerous conflicts which, at times, bring companies to ruin and, in many cases, dilapidate them financially and technologically. Whether reality leaves up to theory, is an altogether different question to which we will dedicate a separate article. Out of Control? There are papers on the floor, across the desk and resting on the keyboard. Piles of files are all around. Magazines, newspapers?you name it. Just about anything can be found in this office. You've seen it in your own organization. You know what I am talking about. Five Principles of Effective Communication The problem with communication is the illusion that it has occurred. George Bernard Shaw Dividing The Loot It is when the going gets better, that the going gets tough. This enigmatic sentence bears explanation: when a firm is in dire straits, in the throes of a crisis, or is a loss maker ? conflicts between the shareholders (partners) are rare. When a company is in the start-up phase, conducting research and development and fighting for its continued, profitable survival in the midst of a massive investment cycle ? rarely will internal strife arise and threaten its existence. It is when the company turns a profit, when there is cash in the till ? that, typically, all manner of grievances, complaints and demands arise. The internecine conflicts are especially acute where the ownership is divided equally. It is more accentuated when one of the partners feels that he is contributing more to the business, either because of his unique talents or because of his professional experience, contacts or due to the size of his initial investments (and the other partner does not share his views). How to Make a Difference Every Day Every day, everyone can make the world a better place. It's simple; it's quick and it is free. All it requires is a recipe containing you (yes, that's YOU!), awareness and a natural disposition to be brave enough to change the day of everyone you come into contact with in a positive way.Appreciating what people do for you, whenever you come into contact with them is the first step. It may not sound much, but saying a sincere 'Thank You' means much to many people - it is not what they experience normally. This can be a 'Thank You' to someone who holds a door open for you to the guy you buy your morning paper from. It can be to an employee who you manage, for something, for goodness sakes, for anything they did well - in the moment, sincerely. The next step, when it is comfortable for you, is to explain what it was they did that was great. So, as an example, it could be to an employee who you manage,'Thank you for that piece of work, your effort has made such a difference to it'.It could be a 'Well done' as you stand in front of a display of merchandise'What I especially like about it, is how you made such a great impact with the cornflakes'Outside your place of work, you buy a sandwich,'Thank you - can I just say what a great job you did putting that together for me; I truly appreciate it'.Sharing positive observations that people might not see in themselves, because there is not enough positive feedback in the world creates positivity. You can make a difference to literally dozens of people every day and makes their lives brighter. And how do you think they will respond to the next customer; and the next. Research shows that they will be buzzing for the next 5 interactions with others. Maybe they will 'Pay it Forward' as in the film. (Not seen it - do so!). This is about small things that you can do every day. And if you can't do it consistently? Just do it sometimes and that is much, much better than never at all.You may never know the positive difference you have made to someone you spend a little time, a little courtesy with - but you will have to live with that delicious 'not knowing'!Tip? Set yourself a target of doing this five times a day - and if you do, give yourself a pat on the back! This works in business and the real (:-)) world too! Sexual Harassment Policy Guidelines Part I Sexual Harassment Policy Guidelines ? Part I Measuring Creativity, DIY style Creativity measurement is often required in order to benchmark existing competencies, monitor improvement, increase output and generally provide tangible and useable processes and structures for clients. Employees Commit Corporate Fraud Imagine the following scenario; Ten years ago you decided to quit your job and start your own company. The Top 10 Things They Don?t Teach You In Business School Here are 10 subjects that academia should be teaching their students in business school: Is Your Employee Newsletter Management Propaganda? What Every Manager Should Know About How to Conduct Successful Training Activities Whether you are training preschoolers in the classroom or executives in the board room, here are 15 premises you might want to keep in mind the next time you're designing training activities. Keep Your Good Workers by Building Good Leaders A recent report from the American Hospital Association's Commission on the Workforce asked healthcare workers key questions about the performance of their front line managers. The study concluded that an employee's decision to stay with or leave an organization is primarily based on his or her relationship with an immediate supervisor. No matter what industry or setting or company size, effective leaders:Possess personal integrity. Can easily adapt to change.Work to build the talent of others.Communicate well with their people. Have the ability to build and lead a team. Can analyze problems and create solutions.Encourage a collaborative work environment. Five Ways to Develop More Effective Front Line Managers: Encourage and give managers time to attend leadership courses. Learning and growing is part of their job.Develop an approach to hire and assess managers based on the above key competencies, not on old job descriptions.Reward effective leadership on a regular basis whether it is through a "Manager of the Month" award or free movie tickets. Get creative with training. Start peer coaching groups - managers with similar levels of authority meet once a month to discuss challenges in managing people, dealing with organizational politics, or other thorny issues. Do short reviews every three to six months to catch performance problems before they blossom into big leadership headaches. When problems are identified, action plans should be put into place to rectify the issue before the next appraisal. Innovation Management ? how does the user benefit? Creativity can be defined as problem identification and idea generation whilst innovation can be defined as idea selection, development and commercialisation. Where Else in Your Business Do You Accept a 60% Failure Rate? I recently surveyed CEOs and Business Leaders of large companies and small, profit and not-for-profit, and I asked just them just one question:'What is the single biggest factor that you believe will inhibit your sustained profitable growth into the future?' A, perhaps, surprising 37% responded that it was people - the recruitment, motivation and retention of people that was the biggest factor. |
