Key Control ? Who Has the Keys to Your Kingdom?
Key control, or more accurately the lack of key control is one of the biggest risks that businesses face. What is the risk? Imagine, you have fired a trusted employee, unknown to you that person had a spare key to your business, they come back after hours and steal business secrets, account lists, equipment or anything else of value. Would this scenario hurt your business? Even if the person turned in all of the keys they had been given, can you be sure they did not have a duplicate made? Even worse, a current trusted employee could be stealing from you. Your first line of defense ? A Key Control or High Security Lock & Key System Not having a patent controlled key system leads to unauthorized key duplication, which leads to employee theft. Even keys that are stamped "Do Not Duplicate" are of little assurance. If all keys were duplicated by only trusted, ethical businesses this might be enough, however almost any department store, home center, lumberyard, even drug stores duplicate keys. Should you really expect the minimum wage clerk in some of these places to watch out for your security? Most key control systems utilize patented keys and or cylinders, because they are patented, the duplication of keys can only be done by factory authorized professional locksmiths. The key blanks and lock cylinders are made available only to those same factory authorized professional locksmiths. The key duplication and/or control can be at the locksmith dealer level, at the distributor level, or at the manufacturer level. All high security key control systems require specific permission to have keys originated or duplicated. These procedures means there is a record of who had keys made and when, and who authorized it, which in turn assures that the owner will always know who has keys and how many. If an employee leaves and you get the keys back, you can be reasonably assured that no copies of your keys are floating around. Hidden Consultants Within Your Organization You've all heard the old joke about a consultant being someone who uses your watch to tell you the time, and then steals your watch. There's some truth to the story: consultant recommendations are often the same things that your employees or customers have been telling you all along. But while you will listen to a consultant, you don't listen to your employees and customers. Why is that? Why do companies pay more attention to consultants then they do to employees or customers? And what should you do about it? But let's start with an even more important question: why should you listen to employees and customers? The Best Way to Keep Track of Meetings How should you keep track of meetings? Recruitment - Do You Know What Youre Looking For? Your boss's unapproachable nature makes you feel uneasy if not a bit fearful. Humor in Business With the advancement of computer simulators, anybody can repeat all the business routines before he goes to the field, and have the opportunity of relaxing from the tedious work with numbers. Leading Meetings: The Top Three Challenges What do people really find challenging about leading meetings? Here are the top three questions that keep on cropping up followed by guidelines or simple ways to keep meetings under control and on track. Make your meetings work. Dissenion Down On The Cubicle Farm How content and satisfied are American employees? Not very! Planning For Growth If you are like many high-performing business people, you have an annual ritual to set your plans for the coming twelve months. Some people do it in December, others at weird, miscellaneous times of the year, but most -- me included -- tend to do it the beginning part of the New Year. Growing Profits is Easy! Everyone involved in running a business from the smallest start-up to a major corporate dreams about how to achieve sustained profitable growth. I'm a great believer that business is simple - it's only us human beings that make it complex. If you simplify business, and that is best done in my experience by "getting up in the helicopter" and looking at the big picture, it is remarkable how much you can see! Business Innovation ? Value versus Quality Creativity can be defined as problem identification and idea generation whilst innovation can be defined as idea selection, development and commercialisation. MANAGING CRISIS; when you?re too good at it When you are acclaimed for excellence during times of crisis you may not feel so good in a non-crisis environment. You may not shine so bright, perform so well, be quite so acclaimed. If crisis is how you satisfy your personal need to be needed, to feel accomplished, to be respected, to be heard, to be noticed, blah blah blah, then you will naturally seek out, create, attract, be drawn into situations that will allow you to meet this need. Your environments and relationships will be filled to the brim with one crisis after another. Innovation Management ? Selecting Good Ideas Creativity can be defined as problem identification and idea generation whilst innovation can be defined as idea selection, development and commercialisation. There are distinct processes that enhance problem identification and idea generation and, similarly, distinct processes that enhance idea selection, development and commercialisation. Whilst there is no sure fire route to commercial success, these processes improve the probability that good ideas will be generated and selected and that investment in developing and commercialising those ideas will not be wasted. Creativity and Innovation Management in Conservative, Staid Organisations Conservative and staid organisations generally have a harder time implementing creativity and innovation into their day-to-day work processes and people. Leaders may want to capture the benefits of creativity and innovation, yet there may be relevant and almost contradictory issues that they have to deal with, including: Credibility - A Golden Key to Becoming More Influential You have been named a new leader in your organization, or you are a long time leader with some new people in your organization. Or maybe you aren't a formal leader but are working on an important new project. Or perhaps you are staff person with expertise that can benefit the business? but only if you can get others to see your perspective. Is Your Business Healthy? Most business owners I work with want to grow their businesses. I guess this probably applies to most businesses in general. But growth for the sake of growth alone is not always healthy for a business or its people. Hows Your HUB? Marketing gurus are always coming up with new lingo but oftentimes they are restating the old tried and true concepts in new terms. Marketing students from the 70's and 80's will be familiar with the acronym USP. USP stands for your "Unique Selling Position" and it should be the cornerstone of your marketing. Running Successful Meetings - The Key Steps To Getting It Right We all complain about meetings which are a waste of our time and the truth of the matter is that so many are exactly that. We've also seen the "corridor" meeting that takes place afterwards where it seems the real decisions are taken, or the agreed decisions are overturned.
