Classic Fragfest: Quake III Arena
As graphics technology improves in leaps and bounds for the next pc generation, more and more gamers expect, and more or less demand, new and innovating concepts to blow their mind. However, there are some games out there that simply stand the test of time for pure entertainment. One of these games is Quake III Arena from ID Software. This game still remains, after half a decade, as one of those games that never seems to fade in appeal when it comes to going one-on-one against a fellow gamer over the age of fourteen. (The graphic nature of the game is not suitable for children.) Whereas there is the impending release of Quake 4, which will go more towards a storyline, Quake III Arena remains simple: Deathmatch - Hunt down and kill your opponent. This is your only task. The game is a First-Person Shooter that takes place in a futuristic world, with gameplay featured on a couple dozen core maps. Your weapons, ranging from real to fantasy, deal out devastating damage. Powerups throughout these maps give you more speed, damage, etc; and each map is usually multi-levelled and reachable by various bounce pads, stairs, and elevators. You just have to watch around the corners, as you never know who's going to be camping there waiting to blow you away. Now, whether your opponent be your best friend, your neighbor, your kid, or your wife; the joy of chasing them down and eliminating their ability to exist as a whole entity will continue to bring a smile to your face over and over again; and if no-one wants to play against you anymore because you're too much of a savage, you can always play against bots. The engine this game runs on is good enough to enable a relatively intense dispersal of body parts from the shot gun blast you administor to your victim, and yes, produces blood splatter on walls and screams of agony. A midrange system can handle all that the game offers. The extra staying power of the game revolves around the creation of new maps and bot models by gamers themselves; which can be found for download at places like LvLWorld and Polycount. Thousands of maps and hundreds of bots can bring a whole new dimension to the game, and the creations continue to this day. Take on Homer Simpson, Darth Vader, or the creature from Aliens in maps ranging from being inside a computer tower , where you are about two inches tall; to rampaging through a city, where you can leap from the top of each building in a single bouncepad ... all the while trying to evade a plasma gun, rocket launcher, or flamethrower. Austin Culley is an avid gamer whose wife continues her efforts to take his Quake 3 Arena Title away from him at least once a week.He can be reached at http://www.oil-net.com

Reviving Old Computer Games Remember the good old days of gaming, when there were only 5 pixels in the protagonist and your imagination could turn them into a heroic figure of Schwarzenegger proportions? When the enemies and the heroes were distinguished by colour and you only needed one button on the joystick? Well times have changed and technology has moved on. Pulling my old Commodore 64 or Atari out of the back of the cupboard and setting them up often takes more time than the nostalgic pang lasts. A Parents Guide to Online Gaming, Part 1 The internet touches every aspect of your children's lives. Where you might look up an unknown word in a dictionary, your kids are more likely to use dictionary.com. Where you use the telephone, they use instant messenger. An even greater difference can be found in how they play games. Where the games of their parent's generation may have involved a board, cards, or at their most sophisticated a console system, the games your children play on the net can be far more complex. They mine gold, spread empires, fight dragons and aliens alone or with tens, hundreds, even thousands of their fellow gamers. All of this makes for a confusing mish mash of names, places, jargon and lingo that can leave you with no idea what your kids are actually doing and a vague feeling of uneasiness that some part of it might not be good for them. We discussed challenge and its ugly stepsister competition, two of the most common motivators. Today, we look at two more on the way to forming an overall model for what moves us. Create Computer Games - Get Started on Creating Your Own Virtual Worlds I've always loved video games, ever since I first played them on a friend's computer in the afternoon after elementary school. There's something almost magical about the fact that we can move images around and interact with virtual worlds, a living fantasy presented for us to interact with however we please. I've also always wanted to make games myself but, until recently, didn't have the technical knowledge to do so. Now, I'm a second year software engineering student, so if I weren't able to code a game without too many dramas there'd be something drastically wrong. But what about the common person: the person for whom the term 'memory leak' conjures up images of their grandfather, 'pipeline' is where the water flows, and 'blitting' is unheard of? Well, everyone can get in on the game creation process, and you don't even need to learn 'real' programming to do so. Evolution of Gaming : Graphics vs Gameplay If you are old enough to remember the early days of computer gaming you know there were a lot of great games that were fun because of the exceptional gameplay and not just the graphics. Gaming started to become a little more popular in the 90s once people started buying computers. In the early 90s games like Maniac Mansion, X-com 1, and Civilization were extremely hot because of their addictive unique gameplay. Today gaming is mainstream and marketed towards a mass audience. In order to market to everyone, many games these days focus on the graphics and special effects rather than unique gameplay. You see many games that seem to be carbon copies of each other with slightly different twists. Drawing Hand Held Surface to Air Missile Fire at Night Using UAVs One of the easiest ways to draw shoulder launched missiles at night is to fly UAVs very close and use the simulated sound of an Apache Attach Helicopter, Howling of a jet fighter or a few UAVs flying together the combined sound of a four engine transport. At night you could have a few UAVs with strobe lights or a tint of green glow simulating reflections off the canopy of an attack helicopter along with sound used by a whistler on the UAV, or even a whistler, which mimicked a high frequency sound which caused their equipment to whistler. $20 Buys a Lot of Game These Days Watching the evolution of sports games has been like watching a retarded child grow up to become a handsome and brilliant Master of the Universe. Now I'm not saying ESPN's NBA 2K5 is the pinnacle of sports gaming, but I will tell you why it comes pretty damn close ? especially for all of us basketball fanatics. Before I go on, let us talk a little bit about the "Corky" Thatcher friendly games of the past. Improving Spelling with Games You got it!
