You hear so much talk about RSS these days on the Internet and in the media. Everyone is acknowledging it's importance in boostingyour site's presence on the web. Not to mention how it can increase your site's traffic and ranking. But what exactly is RSS and how can I actually use it on my site? Try these Five Easy Ways... First, just what is RSS? RSS stands for 'Really Simple Syndication'. Basically, RSS allows you to directly deliver your content to all interested parties... don't come to us; we will deliver the information to you or your website. It syndicates your content. It lets you send updated headlines and brief summaries to your subscribers. In a nutshell; it's simplya more efficient way to get your content 'out there'. Many people associate RSS with Blogs or Blogging because Blogs are usually written in XML or RSS format (code like html) so that these headlines and postings can be easily read and accessed. RSS has been around for awhile but it really didn't catch on when users had to use RSS readers or aggregators but with the increasing popularity of MyYahoo, the Firefox Browser and Blogging...RSS is becoming: more popular, more accessible and more mainstream. That's great --you say-- but just how do I put the stuff on my site! If you're wondering how to actually use RSS and Benefit fromit -- Try these Five Easy Ways... 1. How do I Get My OWN RSS Feed? First, you need to get an RSS Feed for your site. There areseveral ways to do this. Let's just stick with the easiest. You can use a site like www.blogger.com and start a Blog on your site's topic or any topic that interests you. Creating a blog with sites like Blogger (owned by Google) or Bloglines (recently acquired by Ask Jeeves) is quick, fast, and painless. Within minutes you can have your own blogup and running. This Blog will also supply you with an RSS Feed that you can place on your site. Get a XML or RSS orange button and placeit on your site. Link it to your RSS Feed url - this is youratom.xml link if you're using Blogger. You can also use a MyYahoo button so visitors can add yourfeed to their MyYahoo. Each time a subscriber opens their MyYahoo site; your RSS Feed will be updated. You can also add 'MyMsn' and 'Bloglines' buttons on your site. Plus others, give your visitors every opportunity to subscribeto your RSS Feed or Blog, and you will see a marked increase in visitors to your site. Of course, you can also get your own blogging software and installit on your site. For those who want to choose this route, it mightbe helpful to check out this comprehensive comparison of the differentblogging software here:http://www.asymptomatic.net/blogbreakdown.htm 2. How Do I Place Other RSS Feeds On My Site? Have a cool RSS Feed from your favorite site and you want to place that Feed's content on your own site. How is it done? It's a lot easier than you think! There are several ways, but we'll again stick with the easiest way. If you just want to place headlines on your site - try a free service like www.feedburner.com and you will get a headline animator. This will display the RSS feed'sheadlines with links to the content. If you want to place other content from a feed on your site - one of the easiest ways I found is to use this free site:www.bigbold.com/rssdigest/ This site will generate the source code (html or javascript)that you need to place into your webpages. It's good because it gives your code in several options: Javascript, Php file, and Iframe. Keep in mind that Search Engines cannot or don't readjavascript so if you want this daily updated content to beindexed please be aware of this. Just take this code and add it your webpages where youwant this content to go. 3. How do I place MSN Search Results Directly on My Site? MSN has come out with their Beta Program using RSS in theirsearch. You can now place RSS search results directly onto your website. It can enrich your site with daily updated content. And it's quite simple to use; just add "&format=rss" at the end of theURL in your MSN search engine query. For example, to get an RSS Feed for'tsunami relief' you would use this url: http://beta.search.msn.com/results.aspx?q=tsunami+relief&format=rss 4. How do I place Yahoo Results on my site? In Yahoo the URL would be slightly different: http://news.search.yahoo.com/news/rss?p=tsunami+relief&ei=UTF-8&fl=0&x=wrt Of course, in both cases you can change 'tsunami+relief' with the keyword or phrase of your choice to suit your website's content. Yahoo also has an RSS Search Directory here:http://news.yahoo.com/rss 5. What are Tags? How can I use them on my site? Tags are more or less keywords for blogs and you should take advantage of them to bring targeted traffic to your site or blog. Tags have hit the radar lately because Technorati, whichindexes 4.5 million blogs, started sorting blog posts byusing tags. They have created a folksonomy, drawing tags from different sources, mainly Flickr.com which sorts or groups pictures and from del.icio.us -- where you create a tag when you bookmark a page. Or if your blogging software supports categories; this willbe recognized by Technorati as a tag. If you want to create a 'tag' it's very simple; just place this code in your blog: Computers (remove asterisks in actual code) and you will have created a tag for computers. Conclusion You have just discovered five easy ways to put RSS on yourwebsite, but you have to implement this newly acquired informationin order to see any results. You don't have to try all five --- just pick a few and put them on your site. Just take action and do it. It's fairly easy, and you will see the benefits of RSSalmost immediately. How to Reel in Web Site Visitors by Building Your Own Blog I know, I know, blog this...blog that. Seems like everyone is on the blogging bandwagon these days! I admit that I'm not quite there yet, but I'll be joining the blogging club soon. RSS For Fresh Content & Better Ranking A lot of commotion was made some time ago when webmasters discovered RSS (Really Simple Syndication) as a method of disseminating information like ezines, articles and website updates. RSS ? Will It Really Become Mainstream? I am not one to have New Year's resolutions, but I do plan ahead. As we reached the last quarter of 2004, I decided that 2005 would be, for me, the year of article writing and RSS. A Basic Introduction to Blogging Web logging first appeared on the net in the mid-1990s. The term "web log" was initially coined refer to a server's log file and then expanded to include the meaning of online personal journaling. Later on, to avoid confusion, the word "blog" was adopted to refer to personal journaling. Today a blog is defined as an online publication where an author puts his or her personal thoughts and opinions from the most intimate to corporate ideas, concerns or events, in chronological order on the net. What is Blogging? Blogs have been around for many years but have recently become somewhat a new 'craze'. A Blog is short for Web Log is basically an online journal. They can be set up at little to no cost at all, and can be used for a wide variety of things. Some bloggers just blog for the fun of it, while others tend to use their blogs for business reasons. Blogs: Why, Where and How So you have heard about the blogs or you are sure you are now going through one of the blog. You might have seen blogs in the search results and would not have noticed it. Yes blogs are now making news but still a large number of people consider them as online diaries or a political mouthpiece. What about the business blogs that is lately surfacing on the web sphere? Top companies like GM's Fastlane blog is there to prove the point that blog works. The problem is that regular media is not accepting it as one of the most promising medium, which could be as powerful as the newspapers, or tv channels in the future. Thanks to RSS, blog contents could be read via email as and when it is published. Marketing With Blogs - Part 2 In part 1 of this article series on marketing with blogs, I discussed the reasons why blogs are excellent tools for marketing. Writing Quality Blogs Writing?Blogs?Blogs are on-line journals where people express themselves through writing. Writing?Writing is the process where one puts down words of a language on a format that others can read. This process has not been around very long, to use one of my writing teacher's favorite sayings, "Writing has only existed for one day in the one year that humanity has existed." Speaking and thinking come much easier than writing. These processes just flow out naturally like a river of consciousness; sometimes we hardly have to think about doing them. Anyone and everyone can write words down on paper but that doesn't mean it's 'good writing', myself included. Like most things in life, our society already takes writing for granted which is proving to expose more of our ignorance. Writing is a new form of expression, and if we want to do it in a way that the masses can connect with our ideas, we have to think much more simply and clearly about this art. Now that was quite a big paragraph, you've got to wonder if I really needed to say as much as I just did to introduce this article on the best way to write your blogs on the Web. I didn't even mention this main idea, and that's what an introduction paragraph is meant to be for. This is a common mistake in many blogs out there. We try to get too many ideas across in one paragraph, sometimes even in one sentence! The key, as in all things in life-is to keep it simple. Simplicity means that readers won't get confused about what your journal entry is actually about. Introduce your main general topic at the start, and use the subsequent paragraphs to discuss separate ideas that relate to this topic. Try to tie everything up in the concluding paragraph, your main argument and the reason why you've written in the first place. Grammar and sentence construction are not easy systems to master, especially if you come from a school system that spent more time telling you about historical battles and quadratic equations than on how to read and write. This is a real problem. When we speak we can get messages across to others easily, but if we put these words down on paper, the writing just isn't interesting and doesn't connect with people's curiosities and fascination. When you write you are not talking to a close friend. You can't use slang and colloquialisms that only your local community can understand. The aim is to connect with all the people in the world, so let's make it crystal clear and enjoyable to read. Your computer has spelling and grammar checks, as well as access to a thesaurus. Use them, but remember that the machine can't decipher all the intricacies of language. Language is a world in itself, and much of its territories are undiscovered by the masses. So, again keep it simple. Short, precise sentences with single ideas are great. Many words in the English language have the same meanings (synonyms). Use the thesaurus so you don't repeat the same word over and over throughout the text. It keeps the story fresh and doesn't turn the reader off. There's nothing more boring than repetition. Using different words can be a lot of fun and a learning experience, just make sure you use a dictionary (also on the computer/Internet) to make absolute sure of the word's definition. Readability?Simplicity?Make your blog accessible by all people. You can even take into consideration that many readers will have learned English as a second language. As I've said in previous articles, keep to the point-don't go on tangents. Stick with the article's topic, and definitely stay within the realms of your blog's main area. If your blog is entitled "Jazz music", people who go there don't want to hear about how your football team won on the weekend! Please be consistent. How irritating is it to visit a blog that hasn't been written on in months or years? I hope these little tips will help you on your quest to producing 'good' writing that brings new friends and acquaintances of similar outlooks into your world. If you want people to read, the aim is to produce an emotional reaction in your reader. Pretend you are writing to another form of yourself, if it were not readable, interesting and fun?would you stick around? Small Business: To Blog or Not To Blog A weblog, or "blog" started out as a personal journal on the Web. They have evolved far beyond that initial concept. Now, weblogs cover as many different topics as there are people writing them. Some blogs are highly influential and have readership which exceeds most traditional newspapers, while others are mainly intended as personal journals to be shared with only family and friends. So, should you consider blogging? It Really Is Simple RSS I have 'Googlebot' coming to my site every day since a month ago I put up my first news feed, since then I have put up yet another. Blogging Is Not Important - Its Crucial It has been established that having a 'blog' helps your web site gain visitors and higher rankings in search engines. But a small study which I have just completed shows that blogging is much more important than this. Blogging appears to be absolutely essential to your web site success. If you are not blogging, your web site will fade into obscurity. Displaying RSS Feeds on Websites Displaying RSSRSS offers webmasters a unique opportunity to display fresh content on websites. While publishing an RSS feed is a great way to generate site interest and increase communication, syndicating and displaying feeds from related relevant sources can also generate interest, increase traffic and improve search engine ranking. RSS Can Keep You In The Loop When webmasters first hear about RSS they tend to concentrate on the promotional side of things. They want to know how it will bring more traffic to their site and get them higher rankings in the search engines. Webmasters always seem to ignore the fact that RSS can be used to keep up to date with your field of interest with little effort and saving you precious time. Time you could be spending promoting your site. Cash In Your Blog - 4 Ways to Profit From The Hidden Revenue In Your Blog Most webmasters and online business owners know that a blog can bring you additional revenue from advertising, and more traffic from search engines. Then there's the additional benefit of having a great way to spark productive dialogue between you and your prospects. But did you know that your blog itself may be worth thousand of dollars to you in its present form? The day I learned that my blog held such hidden treasure was one of those happy accidents that can make life such a fun adventure. All I wanted to do was find out why some of my newsletter subscribers had not crossed over to my blog audience. In an informal poll, I found that many of the fans of my newsletter were overwhelmed with the amount of free information on my site, and felt that they'd never catch up to reading it all. This led to several discoveries about how I could find a way to make the information more accessible to them without disrupting the enjoyment of my feed subscribers. If your blog has export capabilities, you can use any of these techniques to generate revenue from your blog and make both your newsletter and blog subscribers deliriously happy.Method One: Monitor Your Popular Blog Topics as Ideas for Future ProductsAs you begin to monitor which topics have the most responses, you'll be able to see a pattern that tells you what your audience likes the most about your site. These themes often give you clues about what your next product could be. For example, as I continue to cover free Google tools, tips and news in my blog on Tuesdays, I've noticed that this is the day that I tend to have the most subscribers reading every entry. With that information I was able to create a free Christmas gift for my audience that they'll be able to use as a reference guide.Your next best selling software idea, book or tool could come as a result of watching topic popularity, if you learn how to track audience response.Method Two: The Subscription ModelWhen you're blogging daily, sometimes several times a day, and much of the information on your blog continues to be useful months after you publish it, your audience is probably aware of this. Search engines may be doing a fine job of helping your fans find the information they're looking for at your site, but you'll also find that a cross-section of them would rather digest a periodic collection of your posts for use at a later time.Should you find this to be the case, instead of purging your archives, you can create a "Best of" compilation on a weekly or monthly basis, and charge for electronic distribution. Or you could charge advertisers to be featured in these periodicals the same way you would a newsletter, and offer them to your audience at a discounted rate, as a premium version of your present ezine. Method Three: Turn Your Archives into an EbookWith a blog that focuses on a narrow, popular theme, you could be sitting on a gold mine and not even be aware of it. Whether your blog contains tips for newbies in your field, expert advice for veterans, or success strategies that build on each other, you could be in the position to supply a demand for needed information. There are a couple of tricks you'd have to learn to convert your archived blog posts into an ebook, but you'd be surprised about how easy this process can be. Method Four: Make Your Entire Blog Into a Printed BookI know what you're thinking. "Why would anyone pay for my blog as a book when it's free at my site?" Under certain circumstances, you'd be surprised to find how many people would rather have a portable collection of your blog posts when the quality is consistent. The online version of your blog is the ultimate free trial. Many sites have been using this logic long before the web log came along to allow users to preview their services. For example, the sheer volume of the free traffic generation tips on my site was repeatedly described during my informal poll as "overwhelming". It's one thing to try and read 2000 web pages in front of your computer, but it's not as daunting to peruse a 400 page book in the comfort of your home. Converting your blog into a yearly volume may be a viable solution if consuming the amount of data in your archives is a daunting task. And there are ways to accomplish this that have no start-up costs. If you're still not convinced that it's not worth the set-up to convert your blog into a periodical, ebook or printed edition, consider this.On Monday morning I issued a press release regarding the transformation of my blog to a book, as a test to measure interest. It's almost 4 a.m. Pacific time as I write this, and so far it has been read over 23,000 times, resulting in a distinct increase in general traffic, not to mention the best initial sales debut of any product at my site since this past summer.Just imagine what that kind of interest could do for your site - and how much money you may be leaving on the table right now. Making your blog available in other formats is worth a look. Will RSS Replace Email? RSS is a big buzz word right now, and this question has been popping up all over the place. Blogging for Business Not long ago a blog was simply an online diary. Initially, people decided that blogging was describing, in excruciating detail, how their day went, what they had for dinner last night, and why they spent the whole weekend doing laundry.
