Emu Oil: Wonder Cure or Snake Oil?
In my search for at-home spa treatments and home herbal remedies, which I really enjoy playing around with, I came across a product called Emu Oil. The next time that I was at my local health food emporium buying various essential oils and herbs for my latest herbal experiment, I asked the sales clerk if they carried Emu Oil. She handed me a cobalt blue bottle with a picture of a large, prehistoric-type bird on the label. I really wasn't quite sure what I was going to do with this yet, but I usually follow my intuition when I feel like I should buy something. It almost always becomes apparent to me within days exactly what I will use it for and I'll be glad that I have already purchased it and have it on hand. I learned a long time ago to trust that little voice in my head that seems to always be there to assist me, even when I do not fully understand why. That day I proceeded to create some yummy herbal spa treatment recipes which were quite delightful, but the Emu Oil remained unopened and pushed aside. It wasn't until several days later that I found myself on the internet looking for a solution to a problem that I had been having for about a month. The last time that I had visited my hair stylist she had recommended a hair product that would add volume and body, which I needed for the cut that I was currently sporting. I purchased the product she had recommended and liked the results. But soon I begin to notice that my scalp was having a bad reaction to it. After several weeks of using the product, I finally decided that I needed to stop using it completely. But by this time my scalp had become irritated and itchy. If you've ever felt itchy, you know that it can drive you crazy. I wanted relief and I wanted it NOW! Online I found some information that indicated one thing that might alleviate my condition was massaging Emu Oil into the scalp. Hey, how about that! I just happen to have a bottle of Emu Oil in the cupboard, and now I know why I bought it. Well, not only did it bring me instant relief, it made my hair very soft, as well. So I started reading about some of the other things that Emu Oil has been touted to have been helpful in alleviating. Some of the items were: *Burns, including sunburn and radiation burns *Heal wounds, minor cuts and injuries *Relieves eczema, psoriasis and acne *Soothes discomfort of insect bites and rashes *Helps prevent scarring of fresh wounds *Aids in diminishing stretch marks and other skin blemishes *Reducing pain and inflammation caused by arthritis *Reduce swelling and muscle soreness *Improve condition and rate of growth of hair and nails Apparently there are some people out there who claim that Emu Oil has been effective in reversing hair loss. Is there anything that Emu Oil can't do? I don't personally have any experience with Emu Oil other than using it as I mentioned above. But I certainly would give it a try if I ever needed relief from one of the other problems that so many people say it can help. Although 100% Emu Oil doesn't really have an unpleasant smell, it certainly doesn't contain any of the perfumed scents that are usually added to other products that we purchase over the counter. I found that adding a few drops of my favorite herbal essential oil to the Emu Oil was a great way to have the smells that I like while also being able to enjoy the benefits of the healing properties of Emu Oil. You Don?t Have to Live With Stiff Neck Pain Getting quality sleep has, for many, become an elusive goal in the modern day. Aromatherapy for the Mind, Body, and Spirit - Sandalwood Essential Oil For over 4000 years, the Sandalwood tree has played a significant part in Eastern culture as a material for art and artifacts, a medicine, and a divine aroma. Sandalwood products are obtained from the sandalwood tree (Santalum album), which is a member of the Santalaceae family native to southern tropical Asia. It is an evergreen growing to a height of 9 meters, with leathery leaves, long slender brangches, and small purple flowers. The tree also happens to be parasitic, relying on the nutrien-gathering ability of one of several other tree species for its sustenance. Due to its seemingly strict set of environmental conditions and its parasitic nature, the extremely versatile Sandalwood tree is quite difficult to propagate. In recent decades, awareness has been rising that some forms of pollution pose a global problem. Being Rubbed Up ? The Right Way! - The Therapeutic Wonders of Massage PROBABLY one of the most powerful preventive medicine tools available to us is that of Massage. It is one of the oldest forms of treatment and can be traced back many thousands of years to the ancient Greeks, Persians and Chinese who are said to have practiced massage as a spiritual art. The word Massage comes from the Greek 'massein' meaning 'to knead'. Today in this fast paced 21st century, it could be argued that we've never known a more hectic style of living. When we become stressed our activity becomes strenuous and our energy requirements exceed supply. Our bodies can become tired and stiff, our muscles cramped and sluggish with the overall feeling of being tense, fatigued and stressed. But do we take time-out? Do we look for ways to relax and slow down? Do we decide to nurture ourselves a little? Usually not! Let's face it, most of us just soldier on. We are so caught up on the treadmill of our busy lives that we have forgotten how to listen to our bodies. The experts and their statistics tell us that we are living longer than ever before. Our life expectancy is extending every few years with a result that most of us can now expect to live well into our eighties! Perhaps this is one of the reasons that more and more people today are now taking responsibility for their own health and well being. People are looking to complementary therapies to aid the recovery from tension, stress and fatigue. In our determination to be healthy and remain healthy many of us now use massage as a powerful form of preventative medicine and as part of an integrated approach to our personal health care. THE POWER OF TOUCH It has long been recognized that the power of touch is crucial to us as humans. We are all sensual beings and as a result our bodies respond well to massage and human contact. Research in the UK has proven that in many health institutions, such as hospitals and nursing homes, etc. patients responded better to treatment and were more content when there was more physical contact between their carers and themselves. Here's why it works - There are many types of massage techniques which can include, sports massage, mother and baby massage, Swedish, Shiatsu and Reflexology, but the basic principle of each is very similar. Massage improves circulation allowing your blood to send oxygen and nutrients to your muscles where ultimately they are converted into energy. Furthermore it assists the filtering out of toxins and drains the essential lymph system which is so important for a strong immune system. The result? A nourished, cleansed and relaxed body and a wonderful sense of well being that can last for many days afterwards! POINTS TO REMEMBER WHEN VISITING A MASSAGE THERAPIST: - 1) A qualified massage therapist will have undergone a substantial period of training and should be a member of an international association relating to his/her specific field of expertise. There are a number of excellent therapists in your locality and referring to your telephone directories should provide you with a qualified massage therapist or clinic in your area. 2) Your therapist will want to get to know about you on your first visit and will prepare a personal case history based on a number of questions he/she will ask. In order for the therapist to provide you with the best suited therapy during your session these questions are important and will touch upon medical, social, personal information as well as your family history of illnesses, etc. Based on the information compiled the therapist will then design a treatment specifically for you. 3) It is important for you to feel at ease with your therapist and it is the practitioner's job to make you feel comfortable and explain to you what they will be doing. 4) Always let your therapist know what you are planning to do after your massage. 5) If you are planning to have an Aromatherapy Massage, i.e. a massage combined with pure essential oils, it is best not to have a shower or bath for approximately eight hours as this period of time is needed to allow the full absorption of the oils into the body. 6) Finally when your session is complete your therapist will allow you some quiet time to relax on your own before getting up and heading off and continuing your day. So, as and from today, make a promise to yourself, commit to having a healthier body, system and rested mind and book that massage appointment now ? aren't you worth it? Too Clean?A Critical Look At The Alleged Link Between Asthma and Cleanliness Americans are ridiculed around the world for our attention to cleanliness. Recently some natural health experts have suggested that the growing problem of childhood asthma is directly related to our obsession with clean homes and a handful of studies seem to confirm their suspicions. Are these claims founded in truth or are they the result of "experts" deliberately misinterpreting data? Here's what we know for sure: Top 10 Trends in Healthcare America is undergoing a dramatic shift in healthcare. Actually, ten distinctly different shifts. Although the changes are unsettling, and will cause dislocations in our economy, the overall trends are positive and will help us all be healthier and wealthier when it all shakes out. Your Body is a Map of Your Consciousness Everything begins with your consciousness. Everything that happens in your life, and everything that happens in your body, begins with something happening in your consciousness. A Stitch In Time Saves Nine - Prevention not Cure It is a sad fact that most people pay little attention to their health until it is at risk. It is only then that people truly realise that health and wellbeing is far more important than money, and that all the money in the world cannot always buy health. |
