Top 10 Items to Review & Build Your Business Now!
In building and runnng an independent private practice or small business, there are many items that need to be monitored closely and should be reviewed periodically. Year-end is a traditional time do this, and this week's Letter is a "Top Ten" of items to review as the year draws to a close, or whenever you decide to pause, reflect, take stock and re-assess. 1. Review your client statistics: How many clients did you have? On average, how long did they stay? How did they describe their problem? What did they need or want from you? Does tracking by gender, age, or other criteria, provide insight about your business? 2. Review your referral sources: How do clients find you? Do you have a solid mix of referral sources? Too few sources makes your business dependent on them, while too many sources is inefficient. Who refers the most desirable clients? Who refers the least desirable? 3. Review your outcome statistics: How many clients had successful outcomes? How many had unsuccessful outcomes, and why? How many left before you thought they should, and why? Which clients are you most effective with? Which do you enjoy the most? 4. Review your income, month by month: Look for patterns or relationships with marketing efforts or community events that may impact your business. Does your business go up when school starts or after holidays? Can you capitalize on any of these cyclical patterns? 5. Review environmental changes: Has the community's awareness of your skills or services been impacted by someone else's marketing, by news stories or controversy this year? Has your neighborhood changed? Have circumstances made your office more or less visible? Are other professionals moving into, or out of, your neighborhood? 6. Review office policies and procedures: Do any of your forms, brochures, or signs need to be up-dated? Is it time to add color and graphics? Can office procedures be streamlined, computerized or contracted out for better productivity? 7. Review your insurance coverage, lease agreements, partnerships and other documents that impact your business. Is this the year to incorporate? Consult a professional about making appropriate changes, and meet with your accountant for a year-end review and tax planning. 8. Review every aspect of your professional status: Review your CE requirements, renew your license(s), pay dues to your professional organizations, and be sure your liability insurance coverage is adequate and current. 9. Identify and study the 3 biggest mistakes you made relative to finances, business and marketing this year. What did you do, or not do? What did you learn? What steps can you take so that particular mistake or set of circumstances never holds you back again? 10. Be sure to acknowledge and thank everyone who has contributed to your success this year, including referral sources, advisors, colleagues, and especially your clients. Send holiday greetings, thank you notes, and where it's appropriate, send a gift or token of appreciation. Have a great week! The holidays can be a time of stress ? please accept our best wishes that this year it be a time for peace, joy, and goodwill toward all! © Copyright 2003 by Philip E. Humbert. All Rights Reserved. Seven Ways to Improve Your Results with Follow-up What follows is a bold statement, but sometimes it takes a bold statement to get people's attention. 7 Reasons You Want Referral Business and How to Get Them Studies have proven that there is one reason why people don't do more referral business: they don't ask. There are two reasons why, they forget or they don't have a strong enough relationship with their clients, so they don't feel comfortable 7 Ways To Profit From Other Peoples Products If you don't possess the time, money or inclination to create your own hot selling product there is plenty of scope for profit by using other people's. The Seven Secrets of Top Performers Let's put to rest the fallacy that success, in sales or anyprofession, is due to luck, chance, and/or hard work. There isnothing further from the truth. Think about it, you and I bothknow people who work incredibly hard, putting in long hours, they may even have two jobs, but they are not consistently (ifever) successful. Hard work certainly contributes to success, but hard work alone will not make you top-flight in yourindustry. Is success due, then, to luck or chance? After years of study, in a multitude of industries, I have cometo the conclusion that success is an absolute science. In otherwords, there are exact principles of thought and action that alltop performers universally and consistently exhibit. Let'sexamine seven of these principles more closely:High achievers know exactly what theywant.I was recently working with top sales professionals on aseven-city tour of Canada. In these seminars, I invariably askedpeople what they wanted to achieve in the upcoming year. Manypeople had a vague idea of what they wanted (or what theythought they could achieve); and even more knew what they didn'twant; but the high performers knew in measurable terms, what theywanted to accomplish in every area of their life. Without adoubt, this type of clarity and focus is power!Top performers visualize themselves in possession oftheir desired results.I have interviewed thousands of the worlds most successful andwithout fail they see themselves winning every single day.Whether in business or athletics: Jack Nicholas in golf, MichaelJordan in basketball, the million-dollar sales producer I spokewith last week, they all have this in common. Visualizing is thekey to realizing!Highly successful have an unbending belief inthemselves and their abilities.Winners believe they will win in advance, and it becomes aself-fulfilling prophecy. A common mistake among would-beachievers is the notion that ''if I become more skilled in myprofession I will succeed.'' Yet how many highly skilled peopledo you know that are not profiting every single day? Often twopeople go through the same training course and acquire the sameskills -- yet one becomes a huge success and one accomplishesnothing. The answer lies in the individuals belief system andthe unshakable conviction that he or she will win.Achievers take action ''as if'' they were already inpossession of the goal they desire.High achievers think, work, talk, play, and take action like theperson they want to become. This means turning away from currentresults and focusing, believing, and acting ''as if'' you werealready there. Understand that your current results are thedirect outcomes of the past. The past does not equal thefuture.Winners take full responsibility for their owndestiny.Winners get results! Results are not equal tono-results-and-a-good-story. Many sales professionals are betterat making excuses than they are at making money. ''It's theeconomy, it's the location, my prices are too high.'' You canalways come up with a good story, but winners hold themselvesaccountable. Only when you take accountability for everything inyour life can you be responsible to change anything.Top performers build high-leveragedpartnerships.No one in today's world can make it alone. There is just toomuch to learn and things are changing too rapidly. Highachievers always spend time with other high achievers. Likeattracts like. They attend the same events, eat at the samerestaurants, join the same churches and clubs. Your business andsocial environment is more important than your heredity, chooseyour relationships and partnerships wisely.Great achievers are great givers.Achievers ask: "How can I provide more value? How can I give toothers, to my teammates, employees, clients. What can I do tomake it better?" Winners always give 10 times more value thanthey ask for in return.Success happens according to universal laws and timelessprinciples. Understand and utilize them and you will win. Itworks for everyone....every time. Reminders For Running A Better Business The following tips are from an article we contributed to Compute magazine.
