10 Tips on How to Get the Best from Changing Situations
It can be great to do something new 'for a change', when it's your choice. It's fun then. But when it comes up on you from out of the blue, when you're least expecting it, it's something very different. So, here are a few things you can do. How you feel is OK. Whoever is going through this change experience would feel the way you do, whether it is angry, sad, frustrated etc. all the emotions are acceptable. It is OK in the moment to feel the way you do. Avoid being hasty about anything - let it sink in. The better news will be tomorrow - after you have had time for it to stew a little. Your right brain will kick in - and then you can get creative! Here you can combine the facts that you have - and be very honest and realistic here, with the possibilities. What opportunities could this present? At this point you can see the micro-environment - how it might affect you and what a difference it might make to your life. But, what if whatever happened was going to be OK. What could you use out of this experience to help you go wherever you might want to in the future? Taking a pro-active position on this will make a BIG difference. At the beginning this will be very sketchy, but how about creating a plan of how you can utilise the change to create a better more fulfilling life for yourself. As Benjamin Franklin said 'Out of adversity truly comes opportunity'. Be honest about the life you have - it is probably not that bad - so every change you have experienced in your life has been got through so far. Maybe there have been a few ups and downs, but you've probably been at least OK - so this gives you the chance to be at least OK - and new possibilities too! In fact, you might even be ahead! In your plan, which looks to the future, use the changes you are experiencing to your advantage. Look out for opportunities that might crop up which work for you. Be aware and creative in what you do and where you look. When you are going through this, find moments of success - and celebrate that you are in control - you are being creative, positive and capable. It is worth the celebration. Prepare for change all the time and utilise the new skills (which you would not have had if you had not experienced change) to respond in your interests in future. You might even be constructive in generating changes for yourself. Share your positive experiences with others. Using this pro-active way of dealing with change is radical and new - share your success with and therefore help others. It's your life, and you can be as you would like. And change can re-energise you is so many ways. Let yourself free to play with the opportunities it can bring. Martin Haworth is a Business and Management Coach. Benefits To Having An Education If you look back to the 70s and 80s, many people were able to get by without even having a high school diploma. You could get a labor job and make $20 an hour without much effort. These days, these jobs are much harder to acquire. Not getting some sort of post high school education these days is the equivalent of dropping out of high school 20 years ago. Creative Destruction This past Memorial Day weekend I decided to revisit my bookshelf to poke around and reminisce with books I'd read over the last decade. You see, I not only like to collect great books, I also date each one to remind me of when I read it. My 'invisible finger' guided me toward a book I read seven years ago titled, "Wealth and Freedom" by David Levin. Wealth and Freedom (I know?sounds boring) is a great read on political economy for non-economists?like me. Do you know what a default is? It's what you get when you don't choose to get something else and for most of us a default life is average and mediocre with sprinkles of joy in between. A default life is living for the weekend. A default like is hanging on 'til retirement. A default life is waiting for the kids to grow up, move out, and finish college. A default life is waiting, and waiting, and waiting for things to get better someday?one day. Fear of Success? Fear of Failure? What's holding you back? How Important is Your Lemonade Stand? When my neighbor's child was about 8, he decided that he wanted to lemonade stand. He asked me to help him, which I did. And he was very serious about the whole matter. The stand had to look like a "real store." The "lemonade needed "real" lemons. We had to go to the bank, so that he would have, as he put it, "the appropriate amount of change needed to complete any sale," etc. He had me sign a work contract with him ? made out of crayons ? and tested me on my ability to count out change. Run Towards Fear: A Prescription for Success Fear, or negative anxiety, is the modern day bubonic plague, infecting millions upon millions of people. It spreads with viral effect, and leaves behind consequences of mediocrity and regret. This "plague" is partly due to societal influences (particularly in a post-9/11 era) and partly due to individual issues (the tendency to avoid confrontation of that which we fear). However, whatever the cause, a vaccine is available, and it takes the form of moving towards that which we are most afraid of. Immediately. Is This Your Time To Take Action?
