Evaluating Your Associations (Part Two)
Two weeks ago we took a look at the power of influence in our lives and how it is possible to be nudged off course a little at a time until finally, we find ourselves asking, "How did I get here?" We then asked three key questions: 1) "Who am I around?" You've got to evaluate everybody who is able to influence you in any way. 2) "What are these associations doing to me?" That's a major question to ask. What have they got me doing, listening to, reading, thinking and feeling? You've got to make a serious study of how others are influencing you, both negatively and positively. 3) "Is that okay?" Maybe everyone you associate with has been a positive, energizing influence. Then again, maybe there are some bad apples in the bunch. All I'm suggesting here is that you take a close and objective look. Everything is worth a second look, especially the power of influence. Both will take you somewhere, but only one will take you in the direction you need to go. This week we wanted to discuss three ways to handle associations or relationships that are holding you back. 1) Disassociate. This is not an easy decision, nor something you should take lightly, but in some cases it may be essential (please don't email me asking to advise you about this, only you can decide). You may just have to make the hard choice not to let certain negative influences affect you any more. It could be a choice that preserves the quality of your life. 2) Limited association. Spend major time with major influence and minor time with minor influences. It is easy to do just the opposite, but don't fall into that trap. Take a look at your priorities and your values. We have so little time at our disposal. Wouldn't it make sense to invest it wisely? 3) Expanding your associations. This is the one I suggest you focus on the most. Find other successful people that you can spend more time with. Invite them to lunch (pick up the tab) and ask them how they have achieved so much or what makes them successful. Now, this is not just about financial success, it can be someone that you want to learn from about having a better marriage, being a better parent, having better health or a stronger spiritual life. It is called association on purpose - getting around the right people by expanding your circle of influence. And when you do that, you will naturally limit the relationships that are holding you back. Give it a try and see for yourself. Is This Your Time To Take Action? If you are sick and tired of the dreaming phase of things and are ready to take some action and get results...here is what to do. Career Management and Life Planning Tools: Eight Powerful Questions About Your Future "Most people don't plan to fail. They just fail to plan." This old saying applies to any area of your life where you want to make some positive changes. Prior to planning, however, you must get absolutely clear on your intentions, and then keep those intentions top-of-mind as you make your plans and live your life. Identifying your intentions is particularly key if you are setting professional goals for the coming year, or considering a career transition. What is Success and How Do We Achieve It? To be clear about what success is must be the first step to achieving success. The 10 Questions to Ask Yourself If You Haven?t Reached a Dream Following are a series of questions I needed to ask myself and find answers to over the course of my life before finally deciding to go for it. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if any of these looked familiar to you. You'll notice that many of the questions and my proposed solutions are interrelated. Quantum Success Thinking It sounds simple- right? You are where you THINK you are! And it is simple but do we practice it? Of course we are where we think we are! The question is where do YOU think you are? How a Biscuit Taught Me a Priceless Lesson in Life There are no two greater ironic comparisons than that of a biscuit and life. For over two decades, I'd feverishly tried to bake biscuits. Being a baking 'connoisseur,' I was quite disheartened that I could easily knead & bake home-made yeast, cinnamon rolls and croissants - but try as I did, I could never grasp the technique of making southern-baked biscuits. Regardless whether I used the quick mix or home-made recipe kind, somehow my biscuits either came out of the oven with the texture of mortar, fell apart like charcoal briquettes or tasted like salty play-doh. In any event, it was my solemn quest to bake these tasty breakfast breads some time before I die. Success Is Based On A Realistic Plan Everyone wants to be successful. However, many people often rely on luck and chance to achieve results. The best example in this case is someone who wants to be rich but only try the most ineffective method: playing the Lotto. Of course, there are chances of becoming rich over night, but how likely is it that this will actually happen? Creating a realistic plan in order to achieve the desired results is vital in any case, no matter how high or low your goals are. Measure Effort To Achieve Success! Let's say you're moving forward in your efforts to achieve your goals. Along the way you will certainly experience many victories. Yet there will also be challenges and failures. To keep yourself going, you are going to need lots of support from within. This support is going to come in the form of self-monitoring, self-talk, and self-reward. I can not overstate the importance of constantly telling yourself what a good job you are doing. It's not just the little things that you do each day that will get you to your goal. It's learning to be excited by your choices and recognize your many triumphs - however small they may seem. How To Stop Having Problems If you are like me you have probably lost a lot of sleep over the many problems that arise in your life. Sometimes, the problem seems too huge. I become immobilized by the fear. That leads to procrastination and guilt for my inactivity and Presto! My stress level goes through the roof. Success ...Whats the Key Ingredient? Don't expect results over night - what?? How To Get Out Of The Way Of Your Own Success Success is something that happens all by itself once you've decided to have it happen and let go of the process. How many things in your life are you absolutely certain that you can be successful at? Take some time to answer this question because your answer will establish the upper limit of your success. 3 Basic Steps to Success in Anything Since belief always precedes action, simply changing your beliefs can change your actions to those that will result in living any of your dreams. Falling Up the Stairs There have been a lot of really good movies made over the last several years. There are a lot of bad ones too. And while I try to simply ignore the bad efforts, I like to take lessons from those which have profound messages to share. Among the more noticeable movies I have seen lately, have been the Matrix movies. And, while I don't like everything about the series, I have been totally fascinated by the philosophical questions they have posed. Thoughts on Successful People I was hired to do some training for a sales team from one of the largest companies in America. There were 16 people on this team. This year their sales (for the 16 of them) will be 250 million - that's right, a quarter of a billion - dollars! Needless to say, it was an excellent and fascinating time. I decided to learn a little bit myself so I watched them closely to see what kind of people they were and to see what common denominators they shared. Below is what I found. I think you will find the elements applicable to your own life. Life Issues Pt. 1 - Success Hello everybody and a good day (or night !) to you all.My name is Nicholas Dixon and I am in my early twenties and I reside on the beautiful island of Jamaica.I work full time in a public library , but in my spare time I design and market websites.I personally think that it is fun to help my fellow brother or sister to get what they want out of this life. Think Yourself To Success -- The One Pager Shortcut Series -- Bad Luck, Bad Choices, and Bad Habits We were at some friend's house the other day and the wife mentioned some other acquaintances of ours. Reading-The Best 15 minutes Youll Ever Invest I recently was made aware of two comparative statistics that I thought you might find extremely valuable. I learned that the average American reads less than 2 books per year- one and a half to be exact, with almost two thirds of those going unfinished. On the whole, Americans have lost the habit of reading good books. Discover The 90/10 Secret: It Will Change Your Life The 90/10 secret is incredible! Very few know and apply this secret. The result? Millions of people are suffering undeserved stress, trials, problems, and heartache. They never seem to be a success in life. The Power Of Partnerships Everything we have in life is because of the help of other people. If you have a successful job where you are rapidly moving up it is in large part because of the help you've received from your coworkers. If you have successful and harmonious relationships it is in part because of the other person. If you own a successful and growing business it is in part because of your employees and the relationships you've developed with other businesses associates. |
