Stress Management and Mastery: Shake It Off and Step Up
The moment I read the story I'm about to share with you, I knew it would make a good article. It has one of the best approaches to managing stress, change and, for that matter, life and its living that I have ever read. Give it a read, and then we'll put some hands and feet on it to make it immediately useful. A parable is told of a farmer who owned an old mule. The mule fell into the farmer's well one day, and the farmer, hearing the mule braying, rushed over to see what had happened. After carefully assessing the situation, the farmer decided that neither the mule nor the well was worth the trouble of saving. Instead, he called his neighbors together and told them what had happened and enlisted them to help haul dirt to bury the old mule in the well and put him out of his misery. At first the old mule was hysterical! But as the farmer and his neighbors continued shoveling and the dirt hit his back ... a thought struck him. It suddenly dawned on him that every time a shovel load of dirt landed on his back, he could shake it off and step up. So this he did, blow after blow. Shake it off and step up ... shake it off and step up ... shake it off and step up,' he repeated to encourage himself. It wasn't long before the old mule, battered, dirty and exhausted, stepped triumphantly over the wall of the well. What seemed like it would bury him actually blessed him, all because of the manner in which he handled his adversity. Can't you just imagine how the average person would handle this situation today? The first thought after falling in the well would be, "Who can I sue?" followed closely by, "This is just not fair!" And who wouldn't panic? You don't have to have claustrophobia to feel extreme terror in this situation. It brings to mind the opening lines of one of my favorite jazz songs by sax man Wilton Felder: "If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs, you can inherit the wind." Respond to what life throws at you with an attitude that allows you to make it work for you, no matter what. Notice also that the mule came out beat up, dirty and worn out. If it had been a superhero action figure in the well, he or she would have come out of the well shiny clean, with every hair in place. Have you noticed that real life is usually a whole lot messier? One of the least-spoken but important lessons of life is that there are times when you can't save your face and your rear end at the same time. The really nice thing here for us is that there was nothing extraordinary about the mule in this story. Courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is when you are scared silly and still decide to make the right choices at the right time. I'll close with a couple of action questions and a quote from the e-mail from which I found this story: We all have wells in our lives. What are some of the wells in which you have found or now find yourself? What would it take and how would it change your life to shrug it off and step up? The adversities that come along to bury us usually have within them the potential to benefit and bless us. Unfortunately, this sort of mental frenzy is ultimately counter-productive and leaves the mind so frenzied that it cannot actually take care of whatever is causing the stress. Thus, stress relief is a way to help the mind attend to the necessities of life. 7 Tips to Help You De-stress & Handle Your Problems Life would be so wonderful if it weren't for other people. With stress and self-esteem, however, the relationship is negative ? both in the technical sense of the words (i.e. as one increases, the other decreases, and vice versa), and in its ultimate result upon the person concerned. Stress Management: Holding On Vs. Dropping It One of the dumbest things I have ever done is grab a hot iron by the bottom. Managing Stress - Hire the Right People Managing stress is not easy if you don't have the right people in your business or team. Common SENSS Stress Control Statistics show that all of us experience stress at one point in time or another. It is no longer a question of whether or not we are stressed, but rather how much stress we can tolerate. A consistently high level can lead to many physical ailments such as gastro-intestinal problems, sleep disorders, headaches, heart attacks, flu, frequent colds, cancer, skin problems, depression, and chronic pain. For example, it does not mean that every single incidence of heart attack is caused by stress, but the bulk of evidence suggests that stress is an important factor. The goal in stress control is not to eliminate stress, but to create more of a balance between your demands and coping resources. The first question to ask is "Do I actually want to be less stressed?" Breathing is something that is done everyday, unconsciously; yet the majority of people do it improperly. When babies breathe, it is instinctive. Watching a healthy baby while sleeping, one may notice the deep breaths that are taken which fill up the diaphragm and move up into the lungs. As a person ages, bad habits are picked up, health often declines, nutrition worsens, and stress overwhelms the proper function of breathing. The word pranayama means "that which extends infinitely everywhere". It is the practice of prana or breath. The breath begins at an energy center inside and extends throughout the body to keep one alive. We exercise our bodies, but what about our breathing? How To Use Diet To Reduce Your Stress The ProblemYou don't need me to tell you how pervasive stress is in our modern lives. In part, this is due to our chosen life styles. Quick Steps On Handling Stress Looking for some quick stress relief? The Underlying Cause of Nervous Breakdowns Life can offer us many challenges having to do with loss. Stress Relief - An Industry For Self Inflicted Stress Stress Relief Mental and Physical Stress All people experience stress and anxiety in one form or another. Busy Fish: Tips for Changing Your Day from Chaos to Calm Syndicated columnist Dale Dauten recently wrote, "One of life's great joys that we've lost is that of the empty day, a day given over to quiet, to reading and contemplation. Our planners and PDAs give the illusion of importance and of being in control." A beautiful statement but what Dale doesn't acknowledge is that we've become such slaves to busyness and mental stimulation that spending "a day given over to quite" would drive most of us mad! It would be nothing short of a drug detox. The Top 10 Steps to DeStress Do you feel tense and anxious at work? Do your co-workers and/or boss make you crazy? Is your personal life less than blissful? If so, you've got stress. If you're like most people you've sought refuge from this situation by trying a quick fix or two like calling a friend, walking the dog, or going away for the weekend in an attempt to escape it all. While these strategies may serve as temporary diversions, nothing in your life changes when you return to your routine. Turn Your Stress into Success!
