Local Government Relations for Small Business
Most small businesses simply go about their daily business and serving customers without ever worrying about local government relations. For some it turns out okay but for others it can become a disaster. You never know when a new project down the street may call for new plans to adjust the roads or put in center medians. If you are on a busy road you rely on traffic from both directions. A five-month road project can kill a business and what if it is in your busy season. If you are in retail that could be Christmas Time; imagine half you customers not being able to turn into your driveway? Then imagine after the holidays are over you have to deal with a center median which does not allow cross-over traffic. Or a do not cross over the line sign with a police car enforcing the new laws from your drive way leading into your business? Getting along with politicians, government officials and city employees is very important. It is impossible to get along with everyone and you don't have to like them, but you should know them by name and be involved in the events, which might effect your business. You don't even have to pretend to like them. You only need to give them the respect they crave, demand or in a rare case deserve. Try to treat them like you treat your customers. You'll be glad that you went out of your way to meet them when something like the situation above happens, because you might be able to head off the problem early on, by a simple phone call to your local mayor or council person. All politics is local and all politicians know that. Play it smart and maintain good local government relations to protect your business. Think about it. Setting Prices - Pricing Your Consulting Services THE PSYCHOLOGY OF PRICING California Department of Corporations Attempts to PR Their Benefits to Consumers On Monday the Department of Corporations in California revoked franchise registrations of two franchising companies. In a Press Release the Department said; "The CDC has taken enforcement actions that have resulted in the revoking of registration of two franchise businesses operating in California... also ordered to stop the offer and sale of unregistered franchises in the state." There reasoning was that the two companies in question had not completed registration or sent in paper work on time or completed the forms. What the Department of Corporations did not tell you was that they are known in the franchising industry as being the most inept of all franchise registration states. The American Bar Associations franchise forum has had many a franchise attorney admonish the Department of Corporations. I can personally say we had our registration application in limbo for 10-months due to the Department of Corporations ridiculous bureaucracy. (I run the company; http://www..CarWashGuys.com ). Implementing an Internship Program CONSIDERING COMPANY NEEDS: In identifying your needs for the internship, you need to examine the chief responsibilities of the position. And the broader they are, the more flexibility you will be giving yourself and the intern. Decide upon how often you will need the intern. Gauge any time factor related to the responsibilities you are assigning. Remember that the intern will not be as experienced as a regular employee would, he or she will need additional time to get acquainted with computer and other systems, your style of office management, and other on-the-job factors.
