Starting a Tractor Washing Business
In the heavy equipment cleaning business you can make good money and provide an important service for your clientele. You can save them man-hours, chemical costs and free up time for more important needs such as preventative maintenance and repairs. The client also has a better looking fleet which makes community public relations easier and also helps in operator retention. Heavy off road equipment needs to be clean, especially radiators and ventilation to prevent over heating. It is best to charge per unit rather than per hour and then work very hard and efficiently to increase your income. An operator of a Heavy Equipment business knows it takes many hours to clean a D7 Dozer or a large Caterpillar Grader. They also know that when paying hourly rates to employees they must pay unemployment insurance, payroll, taxes, insurance, and administrative costs, so they are thinking real costs. In the Heavy Equipment power washing business you are literally making money by saving the companies you service money and costs. Usually Heavy Equipment operator companies will normally want a Demonstration wash and generally give you a filthy piece of equipment that they would never ask one of their own employees to clean. Once you prove yourself you will be able secure the account and be flooded with work and referrals. You will be given lists of equipment to clean in multiple job sites. You will need to purchase some of the following equipment: A hot water pressure washer with a minimum of 2500 psi A 250 gallon or bigger water tank A 5ft or taller industrial ladder Ten Gallons of high alkali degreaser Ten Gallons of aluminum brightener A Truck Wash Brush A Hudson chemical sprayers or electric inline chemical pump You will need to also secure extra tanks for fuel if your hot water pressure washers does not come with large fuel tanks. You will need one for fuel for the pump and one for the fuel for the heater. If it runs diesel fuel for both then it will be much easier to work with one type of fuel. Lubbock TX Good Market for a Service Business We very much like what we see in Lubbock, TX as a good place for a service business. There is excellent labor there due to the colleges and a strong growing middle class with younger families. Retail sector is good as well along the Northwest outer ring. Secrets of Cleaning Truck Trailers in Your Fleet from a Veteran Truck Washer Cleaning the trailers towed by big trucks is not easy, those big forty-foot to fifty-three foot boxes are quite intimidating up close when you are holding nothing more than a brush and pressure washer gun, looking at a soap bucket. The hardest thing to do is to clean the back doors of trailers because they get really greasy from all the debris and stuff the truck has driven through. When they run through bad weather areas, they get even dirtier. Pay special attention to rear doors on trailers. Sometimes you'll have to brush them twice. You may even have to do them three times until you get them right. Use a harsh soap or degreaser and watch for left over dirt around the tubular bars that act as the door locks and sealing mechanism. Now on the top of the sides of the trailer you'll have lots of soot if you have a tractor that's been leaking or maybe has a small oil leak or an exhaust problem. This leaves this big exhaust stain down the side of the trailer from the exhaust stack on the tractor. This is a problem because it is hard to clean and you need to clean it. So sometimes you will have to stand on top of the tractor and brush downward. This is done because you cannot get enough leverage from the ground. You may need to pour cleaner directly on your brush or you may need to put cleaner directly on the sides of the trailer. You may need to do both. Make sure the brush is really wet and then set the nozzle on the spray bottle for a steady stream. Spray with the wind and shoot the spray up to the top of the trailer and kind of saturate it a little bit. Then brush it. Now it should be able to come clean. Make sure you rinse really well; otherwise you'll have soap streaks running down the sides. These will be black soap streaks because they will have some of the exhaust mixed in with the soap. Compensation Situation in this Country is Nuts, Arnold in CA Takes Action The Workers' Compensation situation in this country is unbelievable. Why, well because of lawsuits and attorneys mostly. The costs of workmen's compensation on the business community is part of the reason for the slow return of high paying blue collar jobs in this country and the demise of the manufacturing sector. The system covers some 122 million workers nationally, but it is regulated state by state, not nationally and there is nothing close to being a Federal Oversight on this, not that I or anyone else cares to add another layer of bureaucracy to an already broken system.
