< How To Get Face To Face Over The Phone
One disadvantage of selling by telephone is the lack of face to face contact. When you are sitting with a prospect it is much easier to read there body language. You can see the look on their face when they are confused about something you said. You can see the delight when you hit a hot button for them. You can read the shifts in their body as they respond to your every word. All of this non verbal communication is missing when you are selling by phone. Selling over the phone puts you at a huge disadvantage because numerous studies have shown that 55% of what we communicate is non verbal. This technique will give you back that advantage you might have lost. Ask The Right Questions By asking questions that solicit a response from your prospect you will get an idea of what is going on inside the prospects mind. Normally these questions are asked during your presentation or while answering objections. Let's say you are describing how your product or service will benefit the prospect and you haven't gotten any kind of verbal response from them. This is the time to ask a question like: Does that make sense to you? How does that sound? Are you with me so far? If you are answering a question or concern you should ask a question that verifies that you have handled their objection, such as... Does that answer your question? What you are looking for is feedback from them so you can see what they are thinking and so you know how to proceed. Let Your Ears Become Your Eyes In any sales situation it is important to listen carefully to responses to your presentation and to your questions. When you ask a question, shut up. The first person, who speaks, looses. You have two ears and one mouth; you should listen twice as much as you speak. Listen for two things. First what they say. When you get a response listen very carefully to the words they use and analyze and question them until you are clear what they are saying. Second, listen to how they say it or the tone of their voice. Approximately 84% of what we communicate via the telephone is through the tone of our voice. If they answer a question one way, however the tone of their voice indicates something else. Stop and question further to get clarification until moving forward. Say something like... It sounds like you still have a concern? This will show them that you are indeed paying attention and will get them to further clarify their position. If you get a very positive response with an I'm with you tone in their voice, you have a buying signal and should move forward with confidence. By asking the right questions and letting yours ears become your eyes you will find your closing ratio on the phone will increase and so will your sales. Talking To A Prospect As If To A Friend While working with a new coaching client, I asked to hear her sound bite. Everyone needs a good sound bite. A sound bite, sometimes also called an "elevator speech," is a 10- to 15-second commercial on what your company does, offers or stands for. Use it when you meet someone new in business, use it at networking meetings, and use it on the telephone as part of your introductory calling script. Now Is A Great Time To Sell! Its official. Creating Your Perfect Pitch! Why should you describe your business to others in 5 to 10 seconds? How Can a White Paper Support Sales and Marketing? A white paper supports PR, marketing and sales because it works for all levels of decision makers. Engineers and executives may not be too impressed by brochures, but they are impressed by well-written white papers. (The same thing goes for trade journal articles more about that in a subsequent piece.) Seminars for Prospecting The purpose of a 1- or 2-hour seminar is to attract potential customers for your product or service. The topic must be provocative enough to attract attendees, without sounding too much like a sales pitch with breakfast thrown in. Topics can be about the latest advances and/or technology in your industry; the impact of the latest political, legislative, or economic changes; increasing profits, reducing costs, avoiding unnecessary expenses, and so on. Telling the Value Story You arrived on time and completed your calculations. You worked up a presentation of all the things you're going to do and items included, going over each item carefully. You've just given the customer the price. They look at each other. He says, "Okay. Thanks for the quote. Well get back to you. Of course, we need time to think about it. It looks good. I've heard good things about you. So there's no need to worry. We never make a decision without thinking it over first." Complacency and Fear are Sales Busters Prospecting is the engine that propels anyone in sales. Without consistently initiating contact with prospective customers to talk with, your sales will plummet and everybody loses. Studies confirm that 80% of all salespeople fail in their first year because of the fears associated with prospecting. 40% of veteran producers with more than five years -- experience severe sales slumps due to fears associated with prospecting. Tapping The Potential Of Your Customers Business owners of long standing know the cardinal rule "take care of your existing customers first". Today especially we see business owners looking constantly for the new customer. Hey, did you forget the customers you have. All of us want our businesses to grow. However, after a number of years, depending on your business, you might reach a point where your business starts to taper off. You find you are not getting any new clients. Before you throw in the towel, realize that you still have your current customers. Why not try to increase volume and steady revenue with your current customer base. Why Cold Calling Is Dead Our world of selling is closed off from other areas of business that continue to adopt and embrace new, efficient ideas. I was reminded of this recently while re-reading Seth Godin's "Permission Marketing." Here's a book that was intended for business owners and marketing executives, yet it provides a much-needed dose of common sense that would be of great benefit to sales organizations, especially sales managers, who continue to cling to very old, and, in their minds, very right, ideas. Unfortunately, our brave new world has made these old ideas very wrong. Value-added Selling? "Value-added." That word is used so much it has become a cliché in business circles. There may not be a business in the world that doesn't claim to be a "value-added" seller. Your Proposal Was Rejected... But Why? When a request for proposal (RFP) comes in, you get excited! It's a chance to earn income, develop more business contacts, and expand your client base. You work your little heart out in order to be thorough, compelling, and professional. Everything is in place. Your RFP is geared to show why your product or service will meet or exceed the client's goals. With fingers crossed, you submit.
