Marketing-Minded Financial Planners, Its Not Who You Know But What You Know
Almost every day, I hear the same question, over and over, from motivated, well-meaning financial planners who want to use publicity in their marketing mix. It goes something like this: "Who do you know in the media? (Or, sometimes they frame it as, "Who do I need to know in the media?") Can you get me publicity?" My answer is always the same. Who you know in the media is only half the game. And it's the easier half. I'm a former newspaper reporter, and am on a first name basis with plenty of newspaper reporters. And here's what you get from knowing someone in the media: It gets them to take your phone call, or your e-mail. Period. That's it. But it's what you know ? your unique expertise and experience - and how you serve it up to those hungry media folks that determines whether you'll become a media star. When they know you (or your publicist), they'll gladly give you 30 seconds on the phone to make your pitch. But ? and this is the harsh truth ? for you to get into print or on the air, they must make the cold, calculated judgment that what you've got is newsworthy. Not even the strongest relationships or friendships can bend this iron rule. Ned Steele works with people in professional services who want to build their practice and accelerate their growth. Media Relations: What To Do When Youre Misquoted When ABC News anchor Peter Jennings announced he had lung cancer last month, reporters who cover the media went into breaking news mode. Three Publicity Tips for Marketing-Minded Financial Planners Financial planners, the first thing to know about reporters is this: they are busy. TV Reporter Shares the Secrets to Getting Covered on the News Do you have a great idea for a story, but no clue how to get it in the news? Are you tired of pitching press releases the news media simply ignores? Why Not Juice-Up Your PR? Say, from tactics like special events, brochures and press releases to a public relations effort more in keeping with the challenges you face as a business, non-profit or association manager? Publicity - How to Write a Headline That Will Garner Free Publicity Taking your ad and turning it into paragraph-style prose is not a press release ? chances are it will only lead the publisher to call and invite you to run it as a paid ad. A press release is for news or for information about a topic the audience needs to know. PR Planning: Mapping Out Your Strategies, Tactics With all due respect to all those stereotypical males out there who hate to ask for directions, the fact is that even if the territory is somewhat familiar, if you don't have a roadmap and follow its directions, you're going to get hopelessly lost. Making Your Own News Getting a press release published in a newspaper or magazines can be one of the best ways to publicize your business. First, though, you need a good story ? and that can be the hard part. Financial Planners, Want Free Marketing and Publicity? The Key is Understanding the Media The media need you. Need the information and expertise you offer, that is. But they are not encyclopedias. They don't serve up information. They serve up stories. Is There a Plumber in the House? I don't know about you but I get really frustrated when I have to deal with anyone in the plumbing, heating, or electrical field. For the most part, the service is horrible, the contractors are unreliable, and the lack of professionalism is rampant. Public Relations Mixup? When you pay good money for public relations services, you have a right to expect its primary focus to be on your most important outside audiences, those people whose behaviors have the greatest impact on your operation. PR: Your 500 Pound Gorilla What else, for goodness sake, could you as a business, non-profit or association manager, call a heavy-duty helper who does something REALLY positive about the behaviors of those outside audiences of yours that most affect your organization? Managers: Can We Agree on This? Your public relations effort really should involve more than press releases, brochures and special events if you are to get your PR money's worth. 5 Critical Tests Every Press Release Must Pass You've heard "them" say it, haven't you? Be Patient? Nah, Lets Kill Something There's the old joke about the two buzzards sitting in atree overlooking a highway. One responds to the other, "Bepatient? I'm hungry. Let's kill something." Just like thatbuzzard, it is not in the nature of most marketers to bepatient for business to grow. They want to go out and "killsomething," too. Some Cool P.R. Tips for These Dog Days of Summer Yup -- it's hot and sticky and you don't feel like doing much of anything -- let alone working on publicity for your business. Celebrities Cant Have It Both Ways Corporations are willing to pay substantial amounts of money to prominent personalities so that consumers will relate the brand with their favorite star, and thus will be more likely to buy the product. The buying public imparts credibility to the celebrity because of his or her charisma as well as the credibility that comes with prominence in the media. The power of someone's personality also entails risks for the brand with which they are associated, because any controversial behavior may reflect badly on the product. This has become an especially frequent problem in recent times. How To Use PR To Build Your Business Everyone knows the value of free publicity. And given the opportunity, most businesses would jump at the chance to have a news article written about them, or to be covered by TV and radio stations. Mind Your Own Business! And the best way to mind your own business is to insure that those audiences whose behaviors have the greatest effect on your enterprise keep thinking about you in the most positive way. Reason is, bad behaviors often follow bad perceptions, so what your external audiences think about you can mean success or failure. Driving Near School Buses in Company Vehicles School Buses |
