Just Another Day
During a Messenger chat session the other day, I asked a fellow how his day was going. "S.S.D.D.", was his response. 'What do you mean', I asked. "Well, you know", he replied, "It's just another day. Same Stuff; Different Day!". So many people live that way; each day just being just another day on the treadmill. How can that be? Life is such a miracle. There is so much to enjoy, so much to do, so much to be in awe of; all of it an almost indescribable adventure. What is it, then, that enables one person to frolic gleefully along the path from birth to death filled with wonder and anticipation while others stumble along in a daze of ennui? Attitude! I have written before on the importance of attitude. I will, no doubt, return again to the theme. It is a critical understanding. Your attitude determines the quality of your life. Just as the attitude of the slats and flaps on an aircraft wing control the altitude of the plane, so too does your attitude control the altitude to which your spirit soars. The great thing is that your attitude is completely a matter of choice. Events and circumstances need have no more bearing on your attitude/altitude than passing clouds have on the path of a plane. We live close to a very challenging hike that is only taken by the most adventurous of visitors. It takes between 6 to 8 hours to hike up and over 3 mountain ridges to reach and return from the famed volcanic Boiling Lake of Dominica. It is often raining. It is a very tough, challenging hike. Everyone returns bone tired, muddy and wet. Some are thrilled with the adventure. Some are just weary of the ordeal. What is the difference? The experience for all is the same. Attitude is the only difference between ordeal and adventure. So it is with each and every day of your life. Ordeal or adventure? Your choice. Each moment, each day, you choose to adopt an attitude about your life and its components. It is this chosen attitude that determines the quality of your life, NOT the events and circumstances of each day. These experiences pass away like clouds. Like clouds do for airplanes, the various events and circumstances of your life may create some turbulence, but they are, after all, only as ethereal as water vapor. It is your attitude that prevails. It is your attitude that makes all the difference. It is your attitude that determines whether your life is an ordeal or an adventure. "The how of life may seem complex, but the why is simple. It is to revere, relish and contribute." Adopt that attitude and you will discover that life is a great gift and even more miraculously, so you are capable of being a great gift to yourself and to those around you. It may be just another day. What you make of it is entirely up to you. Get an attitude. © Leslie Fieger. All rights reserved worldwide. The Art of Thankfulness With Thanksgiving approaching, I thought it would be especially appropriate to discuss a defining characteristic of successful people that I've met worldwide. Never Quitting is an Attitude Never Quitting Equals SuccessMost people who achieve fortunes in the world are not born rich but everyone on earth has the opportunity to be successful and prosperous. Success basically comes to those people who will not quit and who strive until they achieve their goals. Dealing with Criticism and Rejection Whether it's the other kids making fun of you at school, you just received a really harsh performance evaluation from your boss, you got turned down by the girl you asked out, or you didn't get the job you interviewed for, rejection and criticism hurts. I won't tell you not to take it personally, because it is personal. You are the one who was criticized. You are the one who was rejected. No matter how much self-confidence you have a part of you cringes every time someone rejects you or criticizes you. You are the one who has to get rid of that awful feeling in the pit of your stomach. What do you do to make yourself feel better? P. M. A. P.M.A - so what is it? Some people will automatically recognise this acronym - Positive Mental Attitude. White Sun: How to Cultivate Ones Body Drinking damages the soul; being lustful damages the vitality; greed damages the virtues; anger damages the liver; smoking damages the spirit. Self Confidence and the Way You Use Your Words The way we use language can have a huge impact on how we feel about ourselves. Positive Changes Achieved by Exercising Mind, Body & Spirit My story explains the struggles I had as a 23-year-old single, divorced mom with three children, ages six, four, and one and then shows some practical ways I used to change my life and claim my personal power. Self-pity, anger, guilt, and self-hatred were my constant emotional companions. I was suffering physically, mentally and spiritually. In 1980, I made $80 a week, received sporadic child support payments of $300 a month and lived in fear that we would not survive. I was afraid of life and worried incessantly. I smoked, ate unhealthy foods, did not work out and spent endless hours watching television. My mind was constantly focusing on what everyone else in my life should be changing so I could be happy. Because I could not change anyone else, I thought I was a hopeless failure and could not do anything right. Scented, Spiritual Waters Water is an important tool for magic rituals in many religions and spiritual beliefs. Although it sounds redundant, most cults, sects or spiritual beliefs use it to represent the cosmic element of water for purifying, scrying, and even starting wars. Considering that most of the time H20 is not the only element a spirit seeker needs, the water may go through a bit of a special transformation that requires flowers, herbs, sticks, and other natural resources to become colognes/perfumes or spiritual waters. Embrace Change We all have a unique way of communicating our story, a way that reflects our life experience. The photographer uses a camera, the artist a brush, and the musician a melody or rhythm. But as the years go by our story changes. We look through a different filter, paint with a different color, sing a different song or feel a different rhythm. This past June family members came from all over the country to celebrate my son's graduation from high school. While sitting on the baseball field with picturesque mountains in the background, memories of parenting flooded my mind. I thought about how rapidly my children had changed and how I had to let go of some of my expectations in order to stay connected with them. As I eagerly awaited the moment of my son's graduation, the valedictorian read an inspiring poem and a few students performed original inspirational songs for the occasion. And then the principal addressed the students and their families. She made reference to Spencer Johnson's classic parable about change, "Who Moved My Cheese." It is a paradox of life that while our children change rapidly, we as adults try to put the brakes on the speed of change. We like to think to some degree we are in control of our life by holding on to what we're used too. "No," Hem quickly responded. "I like it here. It's comfortable. It's what I know. Besides it's dangerous out there." Johnson, Spencer "Who Moved My Cheese?" The Rat Race and Smiling Over Spilt Coffee As if choreographed and rehearsed the night before, one lays witness to the rumble of heels, a sea of italian-crafted, waxed, buffed and protected from any Act of God footwear, tap-tap-tapping down the staircase: the mesmerizing beat of the damned. My Attitudes "If you don't enjoy getting up and working and finishing your work and sitting down to a meal with family or friends, then the chances are you're not going to be happy. If someone bases his or her happiness or unhappiness on major events like a great new job, huge amounts of money, a flawlessly happy marriage or a trip to Paris, that person isn't going to be happy much of the time. If, on the other hand, happiness depends on a good breakfast, flowers in the yard, a drink or a nap, then we are more likely to live with quite a bit of happiness." ~~Andy Rooney How to Plan a Vacations of the Mind Part 1 Acceptance as a Path to Inner Peace Inevitably in life we will face disappointment from time to time. Sometimes they may be little disappointments, and other times they may be great, big, heart-wrenching disappointments. When this happens to us, we have a choice in how we react. Some of us may give up on our dreams, others may keep fighting stubbornly against the tide, and still others may choose another path to travel. Use Affirmations to Build Self-Esteem Most of us carry on a running internal dialogue at all times. It is as if our lives are a sporting event on television and there is a panel of psychic sports commentators hunched overtheir microphones doing a play-by-play of the action. What?!? No Bananas? "Where are your bananas?" It seemed like a logical question to ask. For all of my forty trips around the sun, bananas were a key item to place in the grocery cart. For the first time I could recall, the banana bin was empty. So I asked a store worker where the bananas were. I Know I Can, I Know I Can I'm sure most of you remember the children's book about The Little Train That Could. I have to admit that at my age, I don't remember the exact title or exactly how the story goes, but I don't recall the idea in the story. Changing Negatives to Positives Occasionally people will ask me how I keep a positive attitude, or remain optimistic. I used to find it funny that I would get asked such things. It was as though they assumed that somehow I'd figured a way to avoid allowing any negatives into my life at all. I can assure you I have not :-) |
