My Children
I have been a single mom for almost 20 years. My kids were 3, 7, 12 and 14 when my ex left. As a single mom, it's often hard because you are the only one to deal with the children. Although, this can often be a blessing as well. There is no one for them to play against you. Often you second guess yourself and wonder if what you are doing is right. There are times when you are and there are times when you aren't. Overall, you have to do the best you can do. This poem was written when I was second guessing myself. Children learn what they live, that's what they say, what are my childrenlearning by their living? Are they learning that people are lovingor unconcerned?that they are loved by meor that I don't care? What are they learning by my behaviour? Will they learn to be moral, responsible, loving, caring, human beings,or cynical, hurt, confused children, never growing to their full capacitybecause of my limits? How do I limit themwhen I scream and yellwhen I dismiss thembecause of their behaviouror because I am "too busy to be bothered"instead of listeningand quietly loving? Help me, Lord, to stretch my limitsso that I, in turn, can stretch theirs.Let me hold them loosely but lovingly in my handsas You hold me in Yoursso that they can try and I can let them, but still be close if they need me for comfort. They were having a blast playing in the freezing cold water as I tiptoed around the waves, trying to keep my feet from becoming frost bitten. Next to us in the water was a mother with her daughter who was no more than 18 months old. This woman was holding her frightened little girl hostage in the ocean as the bitter cold waves crashed into her and rushed back with a fierce undertow. The poor child was screaming and crying, begging to be rescued from the torture. Her mother thought this was amusing. She laughed at her baby's fear and grinned at everyone around her. I was disgusted and horrified. I finally told the mother that I didn't find the situation at all funny. I have no idea if my words had any impact. By then, my own kids had finally remembered they had nerve endings and were shivering uncontrollably, begging for the warmth of their dry towels and warm sweatshirts. We left the water's edge and the sickening site of mother traumatizing baby. Nights by a Pinocchio Lamp Sitting by her Pinocchio lamp, she smiled at me as her tiny shadow puppet danced on the bedroom wall. "A bunny!" she giggled with all the jubilance of a four-year old. Her blue eyes sparkled with pride as she showed me the animated image she had created. Road Trip with Kids Boredom, limited space and overflowing energy are a source of nuisance for a child when in a restaurant - how much more in the narrow cage of a car on a hour-long ride. You have barely left your home when the notorious "Are-we-there-already" starts, sometimes replaced by the equally infamous "How-long-is-it-still-going-to-take" and "I-have-to-pee" (the latter preferrably on highways with no possibility to stop).
