Todays Employees and Their New Needs: What You Need to Know
Today's employees are not only interested in security or in pay and fringe benefits. They are often placing increased value on being recognized and involved in reaching personal growth goals. As a supervisor you must be aware of these new values. Keeping your employees' interests and priorities will help you better motivate them to work well. Employees' interests and values are changing. More than ever they expect to participate. They also believe that their skills should be used and that they should be provided with on-the-job training. Employees want a challenging job which will provide them with satisfaction and a sense of worth. They respond to broader responsibility and don't enjoy fragmented or highly specialized jobs. They want to have some sense of independence. Whenever possible, ask employees for their ideas and opinions. If some of the task includes their ideas they are more likely to go along with it. If there are no choices, don't kid employees by asking their opinion about what should be done. Also, show your employees that what they say is worthwhile. Keep eye contact. Avoid thinking about what you want to say next or judging what you hear until your employee has finished talking. These methods will increase your employees' sense of worth and involvedment in the work place. Copyright AE Schwartz & Associates All rights reserved. Identifying Candidates for Leadership A critical task in the succession planning process of any organization is identifying candidates. Traditionally, candidates have been identified based on past performance. While this seems logical, it is problematic in practice. Performance Appraisals: Questions for Smarties and Dummies In numerous programs I've conducted on performance appraisals, with Human Resource people (who are responsible for developing and implementing programs) and with line managers (who actually conduct the reviews) are often foggy about performance appraisal procedures. Here are some frequently asked questions. The Power of the Contract in Performance Management An essential step in managing the performance of salespeople is that of establishing a sound and agreed contract between manager and the salesperson. A contract in this context is simply an agreement between the manager and the salesperson as to how best they are going to work together. It is a chance for each party to outline expectations, hopes and fears and is a superb opportunity for both the manager and salesperson to fully understand each other in terms of personality style, motivators and de-motivators. It is also an opportunity for the manager to ensure that the salesperson fully understands their role and their responsibilities as well as their sales and activity targets. Turbo Charge Your Career With The Most Powerful Leadership Tool Of All: The Leadership Talk Part 3 To develop and deliver a great Leadership Talk, you must understand that every Talk has three important parts. (1) Audience Needs. (2) Strong Belief. (3) Action. Creativity and Innovation Management: The Value Of Due Diligence Creativity can be defined as problem identification and idea generation whilst innovation can be defined as idea selection, development and commercialisation. There are other useful definitions, for example, creativity can be measured according to the number of ideas produced, the diversity of those ideas and the novelty of those ideas. Five Reasons Why Leaders Fail to Create Successful Change A bold title, don't you think? I mean, change is a complex thing, so to define five reasons seems to oversimplify the issue. Business Relationship Germs In management seminars I often compare debt to an infection. A reasonable amount of debt will not kill a business, but too much debt will. While most businesses carry a substantial amount of debt from time to time, it must be maintained in an acceptable relationship to stockholder's equity. Muggers in Our Midst - When Rumour and Gossip Pay You a Visit 'I heard it on the grapevine' the old song goes. But the grapevine has the potential to cause your business strife, misunderstanding and ruin! In effect the rumour mill and gossip are dangers you cannot ford to ignore. People who indulge in these behaviours are like muggers ? they leave you feeling you have been robbed! Rapid Culture Change is Possible Purpose: Show how immersion leadership training makes strategic initiative success possible. Accountability Equals Meeting Success Leslie was the new manager of the group. She was replacing Tom, a well respected manager who was retiring. Once she arrived, she made it one of her first priorities to sit down with everyone on the team and get to know them. Organizational Structure, Creativity, Innovation Organizational structure can inhibit or foster creativity and innovation. The problem with organizational structure though, is that it is resultant of many factors, including history, organic growth, strategy, operational design, product diversity, logistics, marketing, client base, supplier base and so forth. Therefore, what managers need, are not recipes for complete structural change, but insights into the properties of fostering structures that can be adapted into the existing structure. Recruitment - Pick People Who Think Old style management doesn't encourage personal mindcontrol, employees aren't encouraged to think. That wascertainly the case when I started work back in the bad olddays however it's still prevalent in many businesses today. IT Expenditure - Why Businesses Spend Huge Amounts on Ineffective IT Investments Another IT White Elephant! Dividing The Loot It is when the going gets better, that the going gets tough. This enigmatic sentence bears explanation: when a firm is in dire straits, in the throes of a crisis, or is a loss maker ? conflicts between the shareholders (partners) are rare. When a company is in the start-up phase, conducting research and development and fighting for its continued, profitable survival in the midst of a massive investment cycle ? rarely will internal strife arise and threaten its existence. It is when the company turns a profit, when there is cash in the till ? that, typically, all manner of grievances, complaints and demands arise. The internecine conflicts are especially acute where the ownership is divided equally. It is more accentuated when one of the partners feels that he is contributing more to the business, either because of his unique talents or because of his professional experience, contacts or due to the size of his initial investments (and the other partner does not share his views). Delegation Obstructions OBSTRUCTIONS: 1. Staff deficiencies. Lack of confidence in employees quite understandably leads to a reluctance to delegate. When deficiencies exist, action must be taken to restructure jobs and/or retrain, reassign, or as a last resort terminate employees. 2. Management deficiencies. Intimidation or lack of organization on the manager's part makes effective delegation impossible. In such a case, it is the manager's responsibility to seek training in the delegation process via seminars, self-help courses, and the like. Focus On the Prize People talk to me about making personal and professional changes in their life. I hear comments about how hard they think it will be, concerns about their ability to be successful, pressure on themselves to produce results, etc. The anticipation (what you imagine or assume will happen) of the experience can be daunting enough to deter a person from taking the first step! How often does the anticipation match the reality of what happens? If your thoughts and emotions are getting in the way of what you want, read on for 10 tips to get going and stay moving. Which ITIL Process Should We Implement First? The following question is usually debated a lot amongst IT managers. "With which process should we start when implementing ITIL?" Everybody has their own views, but here are my takes on it. Quick Tip - Effective Meetings Have SMART Goals The first step in planning an agenda is to identify the goals for the meeting. Properly done, goals have five S M A R T characteristics. They are: |
