Keeping It Interesting
Some lines from a movie never leave your mind; I don't remember the context always, but I do recall the dialog. "The Big Chill" is one of the few movies I own (VHS). At dinner, William Hurt, Jeff Goldbloom, and Tom Berenger argue about their past like dogs growling for a turkey leg at Thanksgiving. JoBeth Williams brings calm by chastising the men, and to that Hurt replies with a smirk, "Just trying to keep the conversation lively." It's one of those "had to be there" moments. Bond traders "keep the conversation lively" . Have you noticed that long-term rates have fallen while short-term rates have risen? Low long-term rates keep the housing market active (a positive, maybe), with the implicit suggestion of a slowing economy (a drop in long-term borrowing by corporations suggests a slow down in the economy). All of this is happening as the Federal Reserve torques rates higher! An interest rate anomaly occurs when short-term rates get close to exceeding long-term rates. This is known as an "inverted yield curve". Inverted yield curves preceded the past five recessions. "Something strange has been going on in the bond market", writes E.S. Browning (Wall Street Journal, May 31, 2005). Markets get long-term trends right, usually. Low interest rates recommend positive stock returns; however, market volatility seems to defy such optimism. One day stocks are up, and the next down. Someone said, "When interest rates are low equities grow." Many stock analysts get slap-happy moments with low interest rates. Optimism does not move markets; pessimism does. Browning wisely observes "...the prevailing view in the stock market is one of celebration..." when it ought to be fear. (WSJ, May 31, 2005) Some economists do expect worsening economic conditions. "Over the past 35 years, the skeptics say, Fed rate increases have tended to end with trouble." (WSJ, May 31, 2005) Most recently, the bubble gum stock market popped during 2000 left stocks looking like pink bubble gum on a child's cheeks. No simple resolution keeps investors from the dangers of an inverted yield curve. Every analyst, economist, and pundit has an opinion. What matters is the reaction of the bond market, and the current short and long-term yields are "keeping it interesting". My point? There is no way to predict every asset class move (up or down). Broad diversification within the bond universe provides aggregate benefit to your portfolio. This does not mean owning every conceivable bond; it does mean integrating bond management consistent to reach your goals within the context of your risk tolerance. * These are the major bond (fixed income)asset classes U.S. Government * International Fixed Income * Municipals (tax efficient accounts) * High Yield * Emerging Market Debt "When a thing ceases to be a subject of controversy, it ceases to be a subject of interest." - William Hazlitt, English essayist (1778 - 1830) Ray Randall serves clients as a registered investment advisor with his firm, Ethos Advisory Services, Essex, Massachusetts http://www.ethosadvisory.com. Investing: Do You Want To Make Money, Or Would You Rather Fool Around? It always amazes me how much stock market investors resemble horse track bettors. Some are very conservative, willing to trade low returns for relative safety. Others bet with both hands, looking for the big score. In this article, I'd like to introduce you to a few characters I've met at racetracks. Then we'll see what they can teach us about investing. Real Estate Clubs Hot Among Investors Six or seven years ago, the stock market was booming, Internet companies that no one had ever heard of were valued at billions of dollars, and anyone and everyone was investing their money in tech stocks. Then, in 2000, the stock market crashed, the Internet companies closed their doors, investors lost trillions of dollars, and life went back to normal, more or less. Five years later, tech stocks are nowhere near their 2000 peaks, but investors are salivating again. This time, they're putting their money in real estate, and they're forming real estate clubs to help them achieve greater success. Day Trading Strategy or Stock Trading Software? Franchise Investing, Franchise Opportunities and Franchising Renewals Have you considered buying a franchise instead of trying to start a business from scratch. Many franchise agreements are renewed every five or ten years, automatically. If you do not want to renew your franchise you need to let the franchisor know a little bit in advance as it generally states in the Uniform Franchise Offering Circular (UFOC) The franchise Disclosure Document used in franchising. Most require that you out it writing so there is no question about your intent, some require this 180 days before expiration. Others state that if you do not specifically say you do not wish to renew the agreement you are automatically renewed. If you do not want to renew your franchise at the end of the five year period, that is ok, but there are generally stipulations after termination. You cannot simply change the "Burger King Hamburger" sign out front to Joe's Burgers and keep operating (example only). The very best way is to buy and sell your stock through Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs). IRAs can help you legally avoid taxes and add a fantastic boost to your retirement plans. The IRA was originally developed in 1974 for people not covered by a company pension plan. "The individual retirement account legislation allowed the average person a chance to put money into a tax-advantaged account," according to Bruce Grace, a Chartered Financial Analyst and Assistant Professor of Finance at Morehead State University. Using Divergences to Keep Out of Bad Trades The American Football season just came to an end with my team getting close to the championship but falling short again. I am a big fan of the Indianapolis Colts and we keep having a groundhog day season year after year but it is still fun to watch. We have one of the better quarterbacks in the league named Peyton Manning who is renowned for his hard work ethic as well as his mental and physical ability on the field. Short Term Savings Products When you invest, it simply means that you are putting your funds in products, in this case short-term savings vehicles, which will allow you to reap high financial rewards. Straddle Strategies in Option Trading The straddle strategy is an option strategy that's based on buying both a call and put of a stock. Note that there are various forms of straddles, but we will only be covering the basic straddle strategy. To initiate a Straddle, we would buy a Call and Put of a stock with the same expiration date and strike price. For example, we would initiate a Straddle for company ABC by buying a June $20 Call as well as a June $20 Put. Options Education: Financing the Calendar! As a trader, one of the key things that I try to consciously do is to cultivate my instincts by talking with other traders and investors as often as possible. It still amazes me how large the divergence of opinion that exists regarding what people believe will unfold as we enter the new millennium. Many very respected names are literally predicting an economic earthquake that will measure a 10 on the Richter scale while others having looked at the exact same research claim that the consequences will be very mild. As a trader I have to evaluate the data and develop a strategy that I feel not only gives me an edge but allows for a great deal of error while still being low risk! Why have Investment Plans for the Stock Market If you do not have an investment plan in the stock market you are subject to impulses, urges, hunches, premonitions, strong feelings, greed, panic, fear, indecision, and just plain foolishness. In my opinion, without a plan, without that clear conception of a total stock market investment strategy, the chances of successful investing in the stock market are pretty slim. Credit Scores = ROI Profits for Real Estate Investors Strong credit saves real estate investors money on mortgage finance costs. A good credit score, along with the other credit and mortgage qualifications, means that investors can pay lower fees for financing, such as points and interest charges. Also, good credit scores help you avoid garbage fees associated with nonprime loans. Margin Benefits are Marginal at Best Margin is one of those things that novices find puzzling about the stock market, but the concept is really quite simple. Still, with understanding the basics of using margin accounts, determining the wisdom of using margin can be quite a conundrum. |
