Trading Tips No 3: Online Trading and Investing: Buy, Hold, and Hope
So you have learned how to trade the markets by mastering a few trading tools like Moving Averages, Channels, Stochastics, MACD, or RSI - that is a great accomplishment achieved by only a few. However, having the tools and rules to trade markets successfully, year in and year out, is only half of the challenge. The other half is far more daunting and achieved by even fewer investors - I am talking about good old-fashioned discipline. That is, discipline to follow your indicators and rules without fail - every trade entry and every trade exit. This is why it is critical that you learn how to trade. This is the ‘moment of truth’ in the life of every trader or investor. Here is a test. Are you able to consistently pull the trigger on your sell signal when all the ‘experts’ are screaming, ‘buy’? Do you ever give your stop loss a little more room because you can’t stand to lose, not even one trade, only to have the market gap open the next day against you? Are you always available during the trading day to follow your trades? Do you let your emotions cloud your thinking and cause you to violate your own trading rules in the ‘heat of battle’? If you answered yes to any or all of these questions, you are absolutely normal and that’s the reason why it’s so difficult to trade successfully even with a good methodology. If you fail to learn how to trade, you are your own worst enemy, when it comes to disciplined trading or investing. Is there a remedy for this problem? Yes! The solution, when you are learning how to trade, is to find a good mechanical trading system that provides superior returns consistently over time and a broker to trade it, verbatim, on your behalf. You will have instantly solved the discipline problem and dramatically increase your potential for success. -=-=-==-=-=-=-==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

There has been much talk lately about Coca-Cola and its potential as a value stock ? as it now spots a dividend yield of 2.6% (which is the highest dividend yield since the late 1980s) and a P/E or less than 21 ? right at the bottom of its five-year low. Moreover, the current price of approximately $43 a share is also near the bottom of its nine-year range ? (nine years ago, the last former great CEO of Coke, Roberto Goizueta, was still at the helm of the company). Sure, Coke has had its own set of problems, but it is a great company, they would argue ? and heck, Warren Buffett is also an owner of Coke shares. Making Your Investment Dollars Work for You Investments are scary for some people, especially those who have never invested before. We grow up hearing horror stories about how this person or that person lost everything they had on some bad investment some odd years ago and it builds in us a fear of investing so profound that it is sometimes easier to get a confirmed agoraphobic to march in the Macy's Day Parade than it is to get someone to put a few dollars into stocks or mutual funds. Economic Survival in the 21st Century - the Three Key Questions to Ask In this "special report", I want to pose a few important "philosophical questions" to my readers. Firstly -- our Federal Reserve Chairman, Alan Greenspan, addressed the effects and implications of our aging population on things such as Social Security again in a speech that he made last Friday. Readers may remember that I also briefly mentioned this issue in my June 24th commentary. I urge you to keep this worldwide phenomenon of the aging population firmly on the back of your minds. If you are like most people, then you earn you living by producing a certain thing ? such as a consumer good, or a service that the masses want. Let's face it ? how many people really "struck it rich" by being pure traders or investment managers? The stock market and other financial markets are definitely very important to us investors/traders but this "super secular trend" of the aging of the worldwide population will impact every aspect of our lives, whether it is losing our relative competitiveness on the world arena, increasing pension and healthcare costs, or even a potential fundamental change of our political system. Real Estate Clubs Hot Among Investors Six or seven years ago, the stock market was booming, Internet companies that no one had ever heard of were valued at billions of dollars, and anyone and everyone was investing their money in tech stocks. Then, in 2000, the stock market crashed, the Internet companies closed their doors, investors lost trillions of dollars, and life went back to normal, more or less. Five years later, tech stocks are nowhere near their 2000 peaks, but investors are salivating again. This time, they're putting their money in real estate, and they're forming real estate clubs to help them achieve greater success. |
