Four Decorative Painting Techniques
Tired of plain, boring walls? Faux finishes are a great way to jazz up your space with little cost or effort. Here are a few of the most popular finishes. Sponging: Of all faux finish techniques, sponging is the easiest, even children can do a somewhat messy reproduction of this technique. In order to sponge, you must first paint the entire area one base color. After this coat dries, then you can take a sponge or even a plastic bag, dip it in paint, and apply the paint randomly to the walls. Although this is a random process, you want to be careful not to get any one area of the wall extremely dark or leave it extremely light or your eye will be drawn to that spot immediately. Sponging is very easy, and for all supplies usually costs between $50-$100, which may also include classes if you want to learn from the professionals. Combing: Combing is a little more difficult. When combing, you use a squeegee with teeth to comb through the top layer of paint. As with sponging, you want to have a bottom layer so that when you comb there will be a matching layer beneath it. Using a combing technique is also very inexpensive, and you can use the squeegee to make wavy, zigzags, and other designs on the wall. Glazing: Glazing is actually the product that you put over your first coat of paint. In order to glaze your walls correctly, you should take a class. You may be able to find a home improvement store that offers glazing classes or you may need to talk to a local interior decorator about classes, although these will likely be very expensive. Glazing places a transparent coat over the base coat of paint, making the wall look a bit shiny and transparent. You can use as many coats of glaze as you want to get the desired look. Trompe-L'oeil: Trompe-L'oeil is French for "fool the eye." This finish fools the eye into thinking that the wall has a marble or granite finish. This is probably the most difficult finish to accomplish on your own. For creating the marble finish, you use a technique very much like sponging, but this one takes a bit more talent. Visit local stores to see if they have classes or tips on achieving this style. These are the four primary types of faux finishes. The first two are fairly easy, while the latter two are significantly harder. Before attempting any of these, plan well so that you can estimate the cost, and visit your local hardware or design store for classes or helpful hints. Having a buddy to take classes with you or practice with you will make the experience more fun. You can even do one room in your house and then decorate a room in your buddy's house; the fun never ends! © 2005, Kathy Burns-Millyard. How to Choose the Right Air Conditioner Filter The air filter in an air conditioning system keeps the cooling coils and air inside the room clean and free from all pollutants, pet dander, ozone emissions and airborne particles. A Look at Wine Glass Racks Any wine collection is not complete without a collection of wine glasses with which to drink the wine. Wine glass racks can store your stemware easily and elegantly. Not only will a wine glass rack save cabinet space, but it will also help keep the wine glasses dust-free. The Benefits of Magnetic Water Softeners With the array of choices we have for softening hard water, it can be difficult to decide which method will work best. Therefore, cost is one factor to consider as well as how the unit is set up, its size and its softening capacity. Nursery Room Decor The nursery is your newborn's first room, his own little world: the environment, which in part will influence and shape his personality. As a parent your goal is to provide a surrounding that is comfortable, secure, inviting and cozy. Putting Passion Back Into Home Decorating For most people, they can count the times they redecorate their homes in a lifetime on one hand. It's a shame because this is not because they don't have great ideas about how they want their homes to be, but that the thought of redecorating brings the following obstacles to mind: Plantation Shutters Bring Antebellum Elegance To Modern Homes Choosing plantation shutters for form or function? Plantation shutters offer both to today's homeowner. These unique window treatments trace their roots to ancient Greece. The Greeks used them for both privacy and security. Interior shutters were used to close windows. Along with imposing columns, shutters are hallmarks of Classical Greek Architecture. This ancient order and form in building design later influenced buildings and architecture throughout the Western world. The Arts & Crafts Movement for Beginners If you like clean, simple, oak furnishings, you're likely an Arts & Crafts aficionado. In this month's column, we'll talk about the history, the early champions and the variety of disciplines within the Arts & Crafts movement. The Advantages of Wall Wine Racks Wall wine racks make it easy to store wine in tight spaces. Many wall wine racks are hanging wine racks. These can only hold a few wine bottles, but cost under $50 and have slots to hang stemware. Some, for about $20, can be attached under kitchen cabinets. One precaution: the kitchen is not the best place to store wines. Wines should be kept in cool, dark areas without strong odors. Contemporary Rugs - Home Decorating With Contemporary Area Rugs Got a room that's crying out for a bright accent or a face lift? One of the quickest, cheapest ways to perk up your living space is with a new area rug. Not just any area rug, though. Today's contemporary designs and styles in area rugs can add a bright splash of color to the décor of any room, from a traditional living room to the most contemporary of Danish Modern living rooms. Decorating Your Kitchen With Antique Plates Antique plates can add whimsy and interest to your décor. Many people hang them right on the walls for a unique look. You can hang them up on special holders made just for this or use ribbons to hold them and hang from fancy hooks. Learning how to arrange your plates so that they look best is key to making them a successful part of your wall décor. The Benefits of Hookless Shower Curtains Anyone who has ever hung traditional shower curtains will agree on one thing: hooks are a pain to use. You get one side hung and the other side comes unhooked. While you're reattaching that side, three hooks fall off. You fumble, you drop things. Before you get the whole thing hung, you are quite tempted to throw the curtain -- and the hooks -- out of the nearest window. There is an easier way. Discount Rugs - Buying a Discount Area Rug A quality area rug for your home can be an expensive proposition. A fine Oriental rug, for instance, can easily set you back several thousand dollars. Rather than settling for a cheap alternative, you can find top quality rugs at discount prices if you shop carefully, both online and off. If you do, though, be sure to educate yourself as to the characteristics of the rug that you're buying to avoid paying far too much for a cheap imitation rather than getting a genuine bargain on the real thing. How To Measure For Window Treatments Like a Pro When measuring for custom window treatments be sure to always use a steel tape measure, never use rulers, yardsticks or cloth tapes. Baby Quilts ? Traditional Or With A Twist I am not a quilter in the typical sense, but I love making small coverlets and quilts for babies when I am not making wall hangings. All you need is some cute and colorful fabric. I use a method of fabric manipulation that is just a free form method of quilting on the sewing machine. Just take a plain piece of muslin and piece a collage of sorts on top of it from your cute fabric stash. You can also just take a plain piece of adorable fabric and lay it on top of the muslin without piecing if that is easier for you. Put it in the sewing machine and start stitching with some matching and contrasting thread and just free form the stitches. It's up to you how you want it to look. Stitch it a little or a lot and don't be afraid to change your stitches either. Even if you have a very basic sewing machine like I do, you can do a lot with just a zig zag stitch. I can imagine how you quilting pros would be able to make it look unique and different. When you have the stitches the way you want them; throw it in the washing machine. This will shrink and pucker because of all the stitching. Because of the shrinking, make sure you increase the size of piece to allow about two inches of shrinking per side. Put batting underneath and complete the quilt as usual. I have also done wall hangings for people completed in different methods or just left unfinished and raw looking as well. If you have a cute collage for babies or have done some photo transfer work, you can make something customized for the nursery. It would look great on the wall too. A Look at Edible Fruit Baskets By their very nature, all fruit baskets, especially the original ones, qualify as edible fruit baskets. After all, when a fruit basket was filled with nothing but fruit, by definition everything in them was edible and therefore qualified as an edible fruit basket. But with today's more competitive marketplace, fruit baskets have grown to include much more than food items. In an attempt to differentiate them from fruit baskets that contain non-food items, the term edible fruit baskets was born ? again nobody knows exactly where, or when, or who first used it ? to signify a fruit basket containing only items that could only be eaten. Nothing drinkable; no wines, no organic juices were included, nor were any jams or jellies or spreads. Essentially, edible fruit baskets don't contain anything that should be left over after a short-lived, sumptuous feast of its contents. Animal Print Rugs - Adding an Animal Print Area Rug Can Complete The Look of Your Room If you love animal prints or have an exotic theme to your room, an animal print rug can be the finishing touch that really brings the feel of that theme to the room. Make sure when you choose the rug, that the animal print you choose goes with the colors and patterns that are already present in the room. |
