Flight Delay
Direct Answers - Column for the week of October 6, 2003 It took me eight years after my husband died to try a relationship, and now I am thinking maybe I should never have tried. Over a year ago I met Jay. I always felt we had the perfect relationship. We like the same things, have the same type personality, and talked things through when there was a misunderstanding. A few days ago Jay came over, and after dinner he said he doesn't want to see me anymore. The next day he left a phone message saying he knows we have a relationship most people spend a lifetime searching for. He said he loves me and still wants me in his life, but to think of this as a break from each other and not a breakup. I spent the last week crying and upset. Do I sit around and wait for him to call, and if he does, start the relationship over? Does this mean every time there is a difficult situation in his life he will push me out of it? Is there a chance there is more to this than he is saying? Caitlin Caitlin, a relationship people spend a lifetime searching for is not a relationship one walks away from without giving a reason. Jay broke up with you in a way which makes it easy on himself and hard on you. Then he put you in a holding pattern while leaving all his options open. As I waited for Tamara outside a shop today, I thought I saw a few falling leaves. Then I realized they were not leaves, but Monarch butterflies. The Monarchs' flight is a bit erratic anyway, and the wind blew them around like leaves. These butterflies are on their long migration from Canada to central Mexico. The Monarchs know when it is time for their journey to begin, and that is why you started dating again. It was time. Like the Monarchs, your flight may be a little erratic before you reach your true destination. Jay was just a little turbulence along the way. Wayne This Or That I truly felt I found Mr. Right. He's one of the few men I know who are considerate, open, and willing to make a difference in the world. He says he has chosen a lifestyle which is not the typical American one of over-consumption, designer brands, and expensive things. I've moved to the city where he lives, staying with him until I find a room and a job. He says he wants for us to be in the same city, for me to be working and living my own life so he knows what we are like as a couple. Recently I saw an e-mail he sent a friend. I know I broke the trust tenet by reading it, and I don't know why I chose to read this particular e-mail, but it sounds like he wants to keep an open channel with her for possible future opportunities. I felt love for him before I found out. Now I don't know if I love him or not. I feel lucky to have found someone, but I don't know if love will ever grow in his heart for me. Beryl Beryl, you don't sound like someone who normally snoops. Something in his demeanor caused you to look, and in looking you have exchanged one old saying for another. You have lost "ignorance is bliss" and gained "knowledge is power." But knowledge is power only if you act on it. You attempted to verify one of two statements: he loves me, or he loves me not. Now you have the answer. If you allow him to determine the course of your relationship, he has all the power. He will do what he will do. That will not lead him to treat you with respect because you are not treating yourself with respect. What we call common wisdom is what made you expect me to say oranges instead of watermelons. Common wisdom flows off the tongue like water over the falls but doesn't always require that the brain be fully engaged. Some people call this, the common wisdom of the day. This particular kind of wisdom is rarely examined for truth or any other useful quality. It is commonly accepted because it is so commonly heard. It is much like an unpaid commercial that we set into motion not knowing where it came from and with little regard to whether it is true or not. It is like an old pal who always steps in to keep a conversation going when we run low on original ideas. It is almost never questioned and in most conversation, it is only a matter of who is going to say it first. Some of these sayings so glibly passed around among us are innocuous, while others are outright misleading and sometimes dangerous. Here are five of them that should be challenged, examined, analyzed and if reason prevails, will finally be put out to pasture. 7 Strategies to Overcoming Anxiety and Panic Attacks You Can Overcome panic attacks and anxiety! Future Prediction Direct Answers - Column for the week of December 13, 2004 Silence Inside Silence means no voice input of any sort. What happens when there is silence? We cannot hear anything from the outside, but the voices inside are what we hear pretty clearly. We can hear ourselves. We can loudly hear to what we think and how we think, if we do. Computers and Internet: Inspiring Us to Create The Internet is sometimes criticized (usually by parents who think their kids need to be outdoors more often) as leading people to be sitting in front of their computers all day growing bulbous, lethargic and (depending on who you talk to) stupid. I think that the opposite can often be true. My friends and I have recently been inspired to new creative ventures through the time spent online. Take Action and Make a Better World Albert Einstein is quoted as having said, "the world is a dangerous place to live, not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it". Innovation Management ? Being Receptive to Inspiration Creativity can be defined as problem identification and idea generation whilst innovation can be defined as idea selection, development and commercialisation. Improvisational Why are we trying so hard? It is like we are in a race to get somewhere and we don't even know where that is anymore. We have lost contact with spirit and the purpose we have given our lives and we are going around in circles chasing our tails. Facing the Enemies Within We are not born with courage, but neither are we born with fear. Maybe some of our fears are brought on by your own experiences, by what someone has told you, by what you've read in the papers. Some fears are valid, like walking alone in a bad part of town at two o'clock in the morning. But once you learn to avoid that situation, you won't need to live in fear of it. A Prison Cell? Do you have a goal? A focus in life? Have you invested a great deal of time, effort, money to achieve and yet feel you haven't made it yet? For all your effort do you still feel that there is something missing in your life? It is obviously very important to set goals in your life. It gives you a focus a way forward a mechanism for making decisions when faced with a number of options. However, it can also be a prison cell. Stand Up! One of the most undervalued blessings is God's will to make every individual a unique creation. It takes all kinds of people to do the great work of the Lord's kingdom, and it's a good thing that each of us has special talents, callings, and gifts to serve this purpose. Working together, we can accomplish great things. Unfortunately, the world doesn't value unique character. In fact, being different often translates to being misunderstood. What is Your Recovery Rate? What is your recovery rate? How long does it take you to recover from actions and behaviours that upset you? Minutes? Hours? Days? Weeks? How long? The longer it takes you to recover the more influence that incident has on your actions, the less able you are to perform to your personal best. In a nutshell the longer it takes you to recover the weaker you are and the poorer your performance. A Rush Home to Rapture Riding a rush, being juiced, flying high-this is the feeling we strive for every day. Aim High Change is difficult for many people. Often times our whole identity is wrapped up in what we've learned as children will work for us when dealing with people, allowing us to survive, thrive and fit in. While some people have had to learn to thrive in the midst of change and learned to be adaptable by being open to new ideas and embracing change, many others have had to fight for survival and every table-scrap that came their way. Behavior is learned and it takes work to unlearn and dismantle these old beliefs. |
