Imagine How Different The World Would Look Just By Knowing What Type of Learner You Are
Are you a listener or a writer type of learner? President John Kennedy was a reader and writer. PresidentLyndon Johnson was a listener. President Johnson didn't dowell as he could in the White House because he thought hehad to follow Kennedy's way of learning and absorbeverything through writing. As well written as thosereports were, he couldn't comprehend them as well asKennedy. It wasn't until many years after the White Housethat Johnson learned what type of learner he was. Now, allwe can do is think of the possibilities of how different theUnited States would be right now if he learned sooner. Eisenhower was a reader and writer. During the war,Eisenhower insisted that all questions be presented inwriting prior to each press event. His press events, outstanding and memorable because of his ability to processin writing, opened his path to Washington. In Washington,Eisenhower, now required to be a listener and respond on thespot, found it very difficult to learn and think. Thislimitation did affect his decision making, thus the world'sprogress, and especially America's success. His country nolonger had the full benefit of his evolutionary learning ?his brilliance. Our school system teaches by listening and reading and notwriting. This is why many writers' in high school andcollege do poorly in lecture-type classes. When required totest based on lecture they usually receive an inadequategrade for their level. When allowed to read and submit areport, they flourish. When allowed to process theinformation in writing they add to classroom conversationsin outstanding ways. Many times moving the information inevolutionary new ways or depths. Writers need to designtheir study through the writing process. Writer's learn andperform by writing not listening. What type of learner are you? Your child? Significantother? Customers you attract? How does this affect howthey learn from you, how they process, and how they succeed? The way they learn affects them in everything they do intheir life and yours. For instance, are you an entrepreneur? Today, it is popularfor entrepreneurs to deliver their information throughteleclasses and teleseminars. I know, I'm a certifiedteleclass leader, and offer these regularly. Most individuals who attend these events learn best throughlistening. The majority of the attendees are listeners.Does this mean that readers/writers aren't able to learnthrough this manner? Not, necessarily. Their success doesdepend on the leader and the event's structure. If you are a reader/writer and you are registering for ateleseminar ? 98% listening design ? then you will need pre-session prep notes, a recording of the session, and to setaside additional time to process the information in writingafterwards in order to maximize your learning. The leaderneeds to all writing time, exercises, during the session. The event needs to provide preparation and follow upmaterials, such as notes. And encourage continuedprocessing through writing afterwards. An important skillrequired for leaders of both learners is learning thedelicate balance between giving space for writing and notletting listeners fall zone out. Are the type of customers you attract listeners orreader/writers? Because of the law of attraction, likeattracts like, and quantum physics, it is natural forlisteners to attract listeners. And readers/writers attractthe same. This does not necessarily mean listener learnerscan't attract readers/writers. It does mean that to attractthe oppose you will need to learn and practice theopposite's way of learning. If you are listener, learn toprocess through writing. If you are a writer, learn andpractice listening and language skills. An acting class isan excellent place to start. Attracting the opposite is a choice. It will require bothextended patience and practice. The payoff can be enormousin making revenue. There isn't a right or wrong in this, just awareness, observation, and choice. If you are acompany that wants to attract the opposite for a wider setof prospects, hire the right learner, and have the patienceto work with them knowing their benefit for the company. If someone is standing before you, you can easily tell ifthey are a listener just by watching their brain process asyou verbalize. If they need to write it down, let them, youalso have the answer on how they learn. Listeners who want to write something, love to talk theirway through what they want to write first verbally beforewriting. Or they want someone to listen as they process aspot they make be stuck on in their writing. Ask them totape record their part of the conversation. They willprobably not need to hear it again but the safety net willprovide calm in their writing process. This is why writers prefer to tape record interviews. Theyaren't natural listeners and need that additional support toprocess. After years of conducting interviews, the writer'slistening skills have increased to higher levels and theyrely less on the tape recorder as support. Knowing your learning style does determine life, career andrelationship performance. It can affect your jobevaluations, who you attract in life, success and results. If your boss is a listener and you a writer, it can be a bigdifference in how you get along, frequency of pay increases, and even whether you are let go. If you have every let someone go, think back to whether theywere just a different type of learner than yourself, andthis tried your patience. I know I can find a few when Iwas an early employer. I bet you can too. If you are in a high position, it could affect America oreven the world. Who knows, someone reading this today maybe President years from now and a single decision like goingto war may be made outside the scope of their learning stylethat can cost America much. Be brilliant at who you are by knowing how you learn. Andthen doing it your way! Catherine Franz, Millionaire Coach, thinks outside the boxnaturally when it comes to attracting money. It's not that I wouldn't like to help them. It's not that I am not appalled at what is happening over there. I have been wrestling with my guilty feelings lately. What have I done to make the world a better place? I started by taking inventory of the areas that I'd love to 'fix'. My to-do list looks like this: Lifetime of Discoveries: Moments of Peace and Renewal There are discoveries all around ussmall gifts of joy that bring moments of peace and renewal. Fear, Faith, and Believing vs. Knowing Fear is deeply rooted in uncertainty. Think about it; the only you've ever feared was the unknown. All fear and fears humans have experienced and continue to experience is rooted in uncertainty. A drive in an unfamiliar place can prompt fear, an unknown result, a stranger behind you, or a dark alley. Even the Smallest Sound You are probably in front of your computer screen at this very moment, reading every word I have written. Victory is an Accomplishment Did you ever watch a bird in flight? Especially ducks or geese as they take off from the water? The take off is not the soaring grace of flight; it is a struggle, an accomplishment to get the bird out of the water and into the air. The REAL victory of flight is not the feat of soaring on air currents to a final destination, once in flight the bird has relative ease from his struggles. The real victory is in getting past the struggles of starting, just getting out of the muck. How Healing The Past Empowers Your Future Everyday I meet people who have a chronic upset that runs their lives, and I notice that they are not even aware of it. Often the pain has become buried in their unconscious; or if they are aware of it, they choose to deny any power to combat it. Giving Can Overcome Language Differences I recently had to take a trip to Germany. It has been more than ten years since making my last international trip. I now have a renewed sympathy for non-English speaking visitors and residents in the United States. The Seasons of Life, Part 2 of 5 Last week we started a five part series on The Seasons of Life. At that time I stated that I believe there are overriding principles that we should follow and be led by. That life is about constant, predictable patterns of change. And that as we approach the future; for all of us, the only constant factor will be our feelings and attitudes toward life. Your Turn On The Holodeck Good morning Roy, good morning Joseth. Sharing Your Experiences and Your Potential! Who dares to teach must never cease to learn. - John Cotton Dana A Perspective on Life! All of our lives we always seem to direct our concern toward attempting to conclude our life path or destiny in this lifetime without really knowing or understanding what this means to us. In reality the importance lies not in trying to determine our life path or destiny, but, in effect of how much growth we accomplish within one lifetime. So you are not condemned if you make one or two mistakes from time to time! The importance in reality in the acceptance of the situation, then the understanding of what you've come to learn and move on in your life. At the end of that particular lifetime, it is measured if we succeeded to meet our intended life path and the relevance is in what amount of growth that we were capable of achieving in that lifetime. Change Your Landscape by Seeing with New Eyes A Story (Source Unknown) ? One day a very wealthy father took his son on a trip to the country for the sole purpose of showing his son how it was to be poor. They spent a few days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family. Upon return from their trip, the father asked his son how he liked the trip. "It was great, Dad," the son replied. "Did you see how poor people can be?" the father asked. "Oh, yeah," said the son. "So what did you learn from the trip?" continued the father. The son answered, "I saw that we have one dog and they had four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night. Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon. We have a small piece of land to leave on and they have fields that go beyond our sight. We have servants who serve us, but they serve others. We buy our food, but they grow theirs. We have walls around our property to protect us, they have friends to protect them." The boy's father was speechless. Then the son added this last remark: "It showed me how poor we truly are." If you stop to think of it, they are both filled with billions of tiny bits of information, stored in the memory cells just waiting to be accessed. They both use electrical energy to find those bits and put them together to recreate something that we have placed there. They work on demand, and we expect them to instantly give us what we want. Nurture Your Heart Pregnant with her first child, Jill could barely contain her excitement over the dreams and hopes she cherished for her unborn baby, whom she had already named Mara (she was so sure it was a girl). She practiced the lullabies she would sing as she nursed Mara close to her breast. She imagined how Mara's eyes would light up on Christmas mornings. She dreamt of Mara's first day at school, her first date, and her college graduation. She even imagined how Mara might look in her wedding gown. Experiences in My Life Prompted Me to Never Give Up Many people think that their life is a disaster that for some reason they cannot go on, they allow depression to creep in and continually give themselves negative bio-feedback. But you can over come and adapt and achieve anything you want in life. I did, let me tell you a real story from top of the world to the bottom and back on top again. It is a true story, one I will never forget. I hope to give you some inspiration today if you will allow me too. The Power of A.S.K.ing Have you ever had the opportunity to follow-up on a sales lead? Recently, I had such an opportunity to reconnect with an organization that I had been trying to secure as a client. Due to some new events and after multiple unreturned phone calls, I decided to ask for the decision maker within the department. After receiving the executive's name and finally making contact, I explained who I was, where I was from and how I could add value to their training request. A planned 5 minute telephone call turned into a 30 minute engaging dialogue where I learned even more about their needs and was asked in return if I had the experience to facilitate a second, separate engagement. |
