Creativity and Innovation Management ? Joy and Sustainability
Creativity can be defined as problem identification and idea generation whilst innovation can be defined as idea selection, development and commercialisation. There are other useful definitions in this field, for example, creativity can be defined as consisting of a number of ideas, a number of diverse ideas and a number of novel ideas. There are distinct processes that enhance problem identification and idea generation and, similarly, distinct processes that enhance idea selection, development and commercialisation. Whilst there is no sure fire route to commercial success, these processes improve the probability that good ideas will be generated and selected and that investment in developing and commercialising those ideas will not be wasted. Joy and Sustainability Joy is obviously a major characteristic of motivation. Joy is linked to: * Sustainability. The more enjoyment an individual attains from a task, the longer s/he is likely to engage with it. * Problem solving. The greater the joy, the greater the degree of absorption in the problem. * Incubation. When individuals enjoy particular tasks, they engage with the inherent problems on more cognitive levels, hence the greater likelihood of attaining insight. * Creativity process. The greater the enjoyment of engaging in particular tasks, the greater the conscious thought process of solving the inherent problems. * Information seeking. The greater the enjoyment of engaging in particular tasks, the greater the individual is prone to actively seeking out the required intellectual stimuli. Why Do We Suppress Higher Thought? Throughout History we have imprisoned our brightest stars and thinkers. In modern periods we force them into works of fiction and disallow those Thoughts, which make us question our perceived or created realities by those who rule over us. We attack the innovators, entrepreneurs, personalities and thinkers in our civilizations in every country in the world. Occassionally we allow a few to come forth with ideas in works of fiction; because we as a people would shun their thoughts if they were not brought out in any other way. Let's use Ayn Rand, Bertrand Russell, Arthur C Clark, John Gresham, Ben Bova, Isaac Asimov, Tom Clancy as examples for this point. When brought forth as a fictional work it makes you think and brings out a point of contention. If brought forth as an idea, it would quickly be squashed as not Politically Correct or used to discredit the person for original thought. Putting Your Ideas Into Action Ideas are everywhere.
