Why Do We Feel Happiness?
Although many for us strive for happiness in our daily lives to think of it as only a goal is I feel missing the true power of this very important emotion. In order to understand what I mean by this let me suggest a short exercise. For a moment think of a place that you would like to visit that you have never experienced before. Now imagine yourself in this place. As you do this notice how you begin to feel inside. If this is truly a desirable destination for you then you are most likely feeling more happy as you see yourself there. Although one may take the feelings of happiness that emerge as one does such an exercise for granted they do in fact have a purpose in being there. Can you think of what that purpose might be? Well after some reflection I think you will appreciate that the feelings of happiness, that you experienced as a result of this exercise, were trying to "communicate" to you that this was "good for you" or "right for you". In other words there is an intelligence inside you that is commenting, at every moment, about the choices you are making for yourself. Now most of us are in the habit of consulting our minds about the usefulness of our choices. In other words we expend a great deal of energy trying to "figure out" what is good for us and what is not. Often such an analysis excludes a consideration of feelings of happiness altogether as such feelings are ironically considered unreliable and therefore not to be trusted. Such an intellectual exercise not only takes effort but one is also often left with a lingering sense of uncertainty about the final choice. The feeling of happiness on the other hand emerges clearly and spontaneously without one having to do any work other than just imagining what one wants for one's self. You might have also noticed that the feeling itself was most intensely felt somewhere other than in the mind or brain. Most feel it most powerfully in the region of the heart. So what I am suggesting here is that we have an inner intelligence that we can listen to to guide us on our journey to a more happy life. That inner intelligence communicates to you in the language of happy feelings. When we are feeling "down", our bodies show this by hunching the shoulders, we stare at the floor, our heads hang forward. When we are seated we tend to be slumped rather than relaxed. Our walk is more of a shuffle, speech is slow and quiet. Find Shortcuts To Happiness If someone said you could feel inner peace and joy by just deciding to do it, would you believe them? Well, we're telling you just that! Anyone can choose inner comfort, ease or a feeling of well-being by learning simple tools that will teach you how to make these decisions. Here's a taste of one of the 6 Shortcuts To Happiness we teach at The Option Institute and how you can begin to use it now: The Capacity for Happiness and Respectability Humans are liable to experience a variety of afflictions, but they are commonly endowed with a capacity for happiness and respectability. There is no guarantee, however, that they will exercise this capacity at all times and to the maximum, whatever happens. Depression and shame remain a possibility, which increases with the severity of their afflictions and the difficulty of living up to the values that are necessary for their happiness and respectability: courage, efficiency, wisdom, and nobility. Love, Uncles, and Etymology Thwack! . . . Thwack! . . . Thwack! Steven Arthur Mills slapped the marble desk in front of Roseville High School's science class with a yardstick. Happiness Without getting into the core basics of philosophy, I will make a few statements about happiness. Happiness is probably the most sought after emotion, and the hardest to retain on an ongoing basis. We all can experience moments of joy that make us happy. How to Find True Happiness! To maintain an unchangeable sweetness of disposition, to think only thoughts that are pure and gentle, and to be happy under all circumstances, such blessed conditions and such beauty of character and life should be the aim of all, and particularly so of those who wish to lessen the misery of the world. If anyone has failed to lift himself above ungentleness, impurity, and unhappiness, he is greatly deluded if he imagines he can make the world happier by the propagation of any theory or theology. He who is daily living in harshness, impurity, or unhappiness is day by day adding to the sum of the world's misery; whereas he who continually lives in goodwill, and does not depart from happiness, is day by day increasing the sum of the world's happiness, and this independently of any religious beliefs which these may or may not hold. 7 Gifts that Multiply Happiness Did you know that there are gifts that will multiply your happiness when you give them away? Here are seven of those gifts. Giving these gifts will allow you to share with others your most unique treasure: your authentic self. Each gift will return to you many times. |
