If you are fishing primarily in lakes I recommend the Bottom Line Fishing Buddy 2255 highly - it's a reasonably priced, good quality fish finder. It's very compact - ideal if you don't have a lot of space in a canoe or float tube, or in my case, a 15-foot fiberglass boat. It weighs just five pounds so its portable if you need to carry it, and its separate bracket clamp means it can be attached to the side of your boat, or to the dock if you are not using a boat. It doesn't matter to the Bottom Line Fishing Buddy - it just keeps finding fish. I've had mine for a over a year now and I've used it on my boat, canoes and float tubes. The Fishing Buddy hangs down at the side of your boat and gives you a reading of the fish below you, along with information about the contour of the bottom, and the depth too. Its got a "Sidefinder" feature as well, which shows up fish up to 60 feet from the boat. One of my favorite features is the alarm that goes off when it finds a fish - perfect if you want to close your eyes for a short sleep. Of course, the alarm can be turned off - it can get annoying if its constantly beeping as it finds fish below you. This isn't a fish finder for deep-sea fishing - you'll need something more powerful for that - but for lake fishing I don't think you could do better. Although mainly a warm-water species, the swordfish has the widest temperature tolerance of any billfish, and can be found in waters from 41-80°F (5-27°C). The swordfish is commonly observed in surface waters, although it is believed to swim to depths of 2,100 feet (650 m) or greater, where the water temperature may be just above freezing. One adaptation that allows for swimming in such cold water is the presence of a "brain heater," a large bundle of tissue associated with one of the eye muscles, which insulates and warms the brain. Blood is supplied to the tissue through a specialized vascular heat exchanger, similar to the counter current exchange found in some tunas. This helps prevent rapid cooling and damage to the brain as a result of extreme vertical movements. A New World Record Bass Many people go to Florida to fish for that trophy bass but did you know that 4 other states have a bigger state record than Florida? Not only that but one of the states is said to have produced a new world record. Florida's record bass is 17.27 pounds, but others often cite an uncertified fish of 20.125 pounds (a fisheries biologist did not physically see the fish to certify it). Leaha Trew supposely caught a new world record largemouth in California. It weighed 22 pounds, 8 ounces, beating George Perry's 1932 record catch by 4 ounces. You want to get a bite, not get bit.Let me share one of my bass fishing experiences with you. This is bayou country. When I go to the lakes south of Houston, I have to watch for gators. So I'm always keeping an eyeball peeled for 'em. But sometimes ...So last night I look and everything is clear so I walk down to the water and start bass fishing. And it's only 10 feet away (just a quick couple of steps for a gator). Ooookay!I slowly and calmly reel in my line (on the outside - on the inside, I'm in total panic) pick up my gear and move on.So I go over to this other part of the lake, and now it's dark so I get up on a pier. I'm sitting in the woods in the dark and I hear something walking down the pier towards me. Not heavy enough to be human footsteps. With what little bit of starlight there is, I can see something about the size of a medium dog coming at me. What do I do now?Well, I can't see what it is, but I can tell it's not a dog. So I get aggressive towards it to see if I can scare it away. Fortunately, it worked. I pointed the tip of my fishing pole towards it and it scampered away.As it left I thought it looked like a large raccoon. Probably nothing to worry much about after all, but they can be aggressive and rabid. But it's creepy in the woods in the complete dark not being sure what's around you.Then, in the water, I see the outline of this huge catfish swim right up underneath me below the pier I'm on. Wow! That's a big one! I've got to move bait up and fish under the pier and catch him!So, I decide to put a light on it and see if I can get a better look at this monster. I aim the spotlight straight down into the water and...Hey, look at that weed ... there were no weeds along this pier earlier. Hmmm. So I lean further over the pier to get a better look at this mystery weed .... YIKES!THAT'S NO WEED - IT'S A CLAW - A BIG CLAW!There is a gator right underneath me!!Apparently (and I was able to confirm this on follow up visits) the gator is savvy to the fact that people catch fish and put them on stringers around the dock; making a great free and easy meal for the gator.That's enough. Fishing For Bass In Deep Water When fishing for bass in deep water try a spinnerbait that you have confidence in and have used to catch fish before. If the fish are inactive try a slow study retrieve. Spinnerbaits as you know, produce a vibration that attracts bass. Use a spinnerbait that has tandem blades and fish from shallow to deep. You can also use smaller blades that will allow the spinnerbait to run deeper. Try a 3/4 to 1 ounce spinnerbait.
