Debt Elimination Is The Key to Financial Freedom
If you want financial freedom, the first thing that you will need to do is to get rid of your debts. After all, as long as you owe money, you can't consider yourself to be financially free. This is due to the fact that the money you will earn in the future won't actually belong to you, as you'll have to put it toward paying off debts in the past. While there are plenty of other issues involved in becoming financially free, you're going to need to work hard to get out of debt first if you want to be successful at achieving financial freedom. There are a few things that you need to do in order to eliminate your debts. The first, of course, is just to make sure that you have a budget set up. Even if you are still a student, you should start now to make sure that you are not spending beyond your means - once debt starts to really pile up, it can be a daunting task to eliminate it entirely. Debt elimination avalanches are a good way to get rid of any existing debts that you might already have. Once you have a budget, you should have a certain amount of money each month going toward one debt or another. If you end up with any extra money one month, you should make sure that you either put it away and save it, or that you put it toward your existing debts. The avalanche comes in once you are finally successful at paying off one or more of your debts. Instead of using the extra income you get each month on other purchases, you should apply that money to one of your existing debts. The result is that you'll be paying off your remaining debts even faster than you were before. The more debts you pay off, the faster your remaining debts are paid - and the sooner you will get out of debt. Another thing that you should think about when you're looking toward getting out of debt is debt consolidation. This may be more effective than a debt elimination avalanche, but you should be careful. While you are the only person in charge of how much you pay while you're working on the debt avalanche, debt consolidation requires putting somebody else in charge of your debt, which may not be the best idea if you get involved with the wrong company. However, if you have several student loans, then you might find it easiest to consolidate your different student loans in order to lower your interest payments. You can even start budgeting and paying off your debt while you're a student. Just remember, the sooner you start paying your debts, the sooner you'll be completely financially free. It might be harder at first, but it is possible to eliminate debt for students. Bankruptcy: What the New Law Means to You On April 20 of this year, President Bush signed a bankruptcy reform law. When this law goes into effect in October of this year, it will be much more difficult for Americans to use Chapter 7 bankruptcy to get a fresh start on their financial lives. Personal Bankruptcy ? If Its Unavoidable, File Now The Bankruptcy Abuse and Consumer Protection Act, signed into law by President Bush last April, promises changes to Federal bankruptcy law that have been long sought by the lending industry. The bill promises sweeping changes to Federal law, and will make it much harder for the average consumer in financial trouble to have their debts wiped out by filing for bankruptcy. Recent trends suggest that those considering a bankruptcy filing should do so now, as the line to do so is already getting rather long. New Bankruptcy Law ? Targeting the Wrong People? Last April, President Bush enthusiastically signed into law the oddly-named Bankruptcy Abuse and Consumer Protection Act. This bill, representing the biggest overhaul of bankruptcy law in twenty-five years, was written in order to discourage "bankruptcy of convenience." Proponents of the bill, which included the credit card industry, say that the bill is necessary in order to stop an avalanche of bankruptcy filings by drug users and compulsive shoppers and gamblers. The law makes it harder to have debts wiped away, requires credit counseling for those considering bankruptcy, and holds attorneys responsible for paperwork errors by their clients in bankruptcy cases. The net result will probably be chaos, as fewer attorneys will handle bankruptcy cases, credit counselors will raise their fees, and more consumers with problem debt will be clueless as to what they should do next. Adding to the confusion are some new statistics that suggest that a large number of bankruptcies that are thought to be personal are actually business bankruptcies. As a result, the new law may be unfairly targeting consumers for punishment when they are not actually the biggest part of the problem. Worse, it could be harming small businesses. Bankruptcy is on the rise in this country as consumer debt piles higher and higher. Some people blame the creditors, making it too easy for most consumers to obtain credit. In reality, there are many different reasons that people file for bankruptcy. 5 Ways to Get Out of Debt It has been said that everyday more and more people in the world are getting into unsecured debt. Once reason for this is the relative ease in which credit card companies and banks are extending credit to their customers. In fact, it was reported in the newspapers that in a test, a person was able to amass 15 credit cards in one afternoon quite easily. Credit Card Debt & the Unfairness of the Universal Default Clause Let's look at a real world example: A woman purchased a new $4,000 large screen TV a few months ago based on the knowledge her monthly payment was going to be $175, and based on the 9% interest rate charged by her credit card company. For five months straight she made all her payments on time, but in the fifth month she was late paying her mortgage bill, for reasons unknown. She found out a month or two later that her credit card company doubled her interest rate to 18%, thus increasing the payment for the TV to about $190 per month. Even though she was never late on any other payments, she found most of her other credit cards raised their interest rates as well. Even her car insurance company raised their rates. The net effect was she ended up paying nearly $200 per month more because she was late on a single mortgage payment. Once it takes effect in October, 2005, the law will make it harder for those with problem debt to have their debt wiped away by the courts. Most will have to agree to a five-year repayment plan. In passing this new law, members of Congress suggested that our bankruptcy courts are filled with cases involving not ordinary citizens, but with reckless gamblers, shoppers, and drug abusers. Is that really the case? Debt Consolidation and Personal Finances: Learn the Truth! An inability to manage credit, growing debt and bankruptcy are all major problems today.
