3 Secrets to Developing Superior People Skills
1. If What You Are Doing Is Not Working Change Your Approach When I was in school I always had a small group of close friends but I never found it easy meeting new people. By the time I reluctantly entered the work force it was clear that my communication skills were limiting my progress. The fact that I was as capable or even more capable than my peers meant little when I was unable to create a favorable impression. I needed to become a lot more confident, dynamic and charming. And I did. I changed my approach once I learned how to by studying advanced communication skills. What would have happened if I did not change my approach? Year after year I would have become more and more frustrated and bitter. I could easily have adopted the world view that nothing ever works out for me and before long I would have spent most of my time with other negative people. Things do not change until you change. Doing nothing is not an option in case you actually think it is. The trend will continue and reach its natural conclusion until you change the trend. Decide to change and look for answers. The clock is ticking. And the time to begin is now. 2. Learn From People Who Get Results It is easy to get advice when you have a problem. Everyone has an opinion! However unless that person has proven expertise in that area be careful about following his advice. On the other hand when you want to become better at something all you really need to do is to open your eyes. Who do you know who excels at that activity? Who has already solved that problem in their own life? Recently I was walking around town with a friend who invests in property. Now a lot of people own their own home and even a second home. This man is different. He owns several million dollars worth of residential property and a hotel. Maybe he would be a good person to talk to if you want to learn how to make money in property! As we walked around I asked him lots and lots of questions. He is very patient with me! I was amazed how much I could learn in minutes just by asking the right questions of someone with the right answers. 3. Invest In Your Future I have always been fascinated at how quickly my life can change once I learn and use new distinctions. Think about it. The only thing stopping you from succeeding in any area of life is a lack of knowledge. And if you commit to learning you can bridge that gap. Let us say your goal is to be the CEO of the largest company in your town or city. What is stopping you? Knowledge and skills. And these can be learned. You can acquire the knowledge and mental skills, the people skills and the ability to handle pressure. Obviously you will choose a goal that will make you happy and avoid occupations that you are not suited to. You will naturally favor goals that build on your interests and aptitudes. How are you going to quickly acquire the skills you need to move ahead in your life? The fastest way is to invest money in courses and books that reveal the strategies you need. Consider how much money you spend each year to service your car. The cost of oil changes, new tires and other repairs. Not to mention insurance. Do you spend this much on servicing and upgrading your skills? And No this is not the responsibility of your employer. Your company only spends on you to achieve the corporate goals not your goals. The first time I attended a huge three day personal development seminar it was with several thousand people. And I learned a lot in the car park! I noticed at 3 A.M. when the first day ended that the car park was full of very expensive luxury cars. Porsche, Rolls Royce, Jaguar, Bentley and Ferrari. It was then that I understood what separates the most successful people from everyone else. A lifetime commitment to learning and a willingness to invest in their own development. Do you want to step up and join those at the top of your field? It is easier than you think because most people prefer to do nothing and hope that things will somehow get better. Take action and invest today in a bright new future. About The Author Peter Murphy is a peak performance expert. Surviving the Workday in Your Organization Most people suffer from stress at some time during the day. When you recognise your own peak and low energy levels, you can work with your body clock to maintain high productivity and alertness. It makes sense to tackle the hardest tasks at high-energy times, and when you're feeling low, do simpler tasks like sorting the mail or filing. If you force yourself to do difficult tasks when your energy is low, you'll take much longer to finish them. Life - Is It Just An Illusion? It's a well-known fact that electrons and atoms move at the speed of light, technically flickering in and out of existence. In other words, half of the time we are actually not here. Loving Every Phenomenal Part of You Have you ever wished yourself away? I am not referring to leaving your precious life on this Earth; but rather, just wished you weren't a certain way or did not have some particular qualities and mannerisms that were so apparent to you. I know I have. Successful Implementation of Company Wide Coaching Programmes Ten years ago I was fortunate enough to be heavily involved in the implementation of a company wide coaching programme, both as an employee who was to receive coaching but also as a manager and coach who was expected to regular coach my reports and my peers to enable them to achieve their objectives. I say, fortunate enough, because I found that when I was coached effectively I became really motivated and focused, and when I finally became a proficient coach, I again found it motivational in that I was able to support and enable my direct reports to achieve more. Coaching: YOU Can Improve Your Organizations Performance GOOD BUSINESS COACHING: Clearly, the right kind of coaching can alter a team's or an organization's performance. The implication for business is that if you create a climate of coaching in any organization, you can produce performance that exceeds your expectations - and you won't have to change the people to do so. Coaching can produce star performers in organizations, even when the players are people of ordinary talent and ability. 7 Destructive Habits of Incompetent People WARNING! If you want to have a fantastic life, never engage yourself in these 7 deadly habits that incompetent people do. Avoid the Tendency to Underestimate Your Greatness As a whole I think there is a sad tendency in most of us to underestimate just how powerful we are. Just how much greatness lies inside each and every one of us - just waiting to get out. The reality is if you knew just how special you were - and how much greatness went into making you the unique you that you are I'm convinced you'd immediately know that nothing can truly keep you from achieving that which you want in your life. What is the Success Lesson in this Story? One of my clients gave me permission to tell you his story. Grow Through It It's past bedtime for most working men. It's not unbearably late and I have no appointments tomorrow morning so I sit here and contemplate. Contemplate what? Well, what do I always contemplate? Life, the concept of God, the meaning of life, what's happening in society, and my next step in my own journey; there really is a lot to consider or, more aptly put, more that one can consider. I speak of being in the moment, staying present and not worrying. You are more effective in that place. Yet, there are times for reflection. How to Kill Fear When Dealing with Aggressive People The book Feel The Fear And Do It Anyway by Susan Jeffers is regarded as a self help classic. Have you read it? Business Coaching Legacy: Reflections on What You Want to Leave Behind? Updating my will has been on my mind for quite some time now. Life circumstances change, kids grow-up, financial situations changes. I procrastinated for a very long time about this will. Now that it is, I feel very satisfied and pleased. There is peace in that corner of my mind that nagged and nagged about it for so long. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to realize that people, myself included, avoid making out wills because they don't want to confront their own mortality or have to face up to making difficult decisions. Mid Life Crisis, Life Transitions, & Ontological Coaching Recently I have been watching a TV show called Blowout. It is a reality show about a hair designer, Jonathan Antin who struggles to get his Beverly Hills salon up and running. Not only do the Hollywood stars visit his shop but also many other women come in for makeovers with the hope that they too will look like the rich and famous. In fact, when their makeovers are finished they really do look more glamorous than when they walked in. Actually, the TV is filled with shows like these including the famous Extreme Makeover and Dr. 90214, which depicts Beverly Hill's plastic surgeons reshaping and changing the appearances of women of all ages. In these shows the women, in particular, discuss how they feel stuck in a midlife crisis or are anxious about a life transition. Executive Coaching ? Finding a Coach and Understanding the Process Nobody in business can fail to have noticed the recent rise in the number of coaches and consultants offering their services. But how do you go about finding a coach who will give you a return on your investment? Executive coaching might be an option for you if you are running your own business or are in an employed management role, and have aspirations to achieve more. The Magic of Hearing I'm working on a coach training certification, and one of the "proficiencies" I'm expected to have mastered is "engages in provocative conversations." Now, that really got me thinking. What's a provocative conversation? Is Coaching Everything That It Is Cracked Up To Be? Personal or business coaching has helped thousands change their lives and achieve their goals. Yet, for the sceptics it still is a fuzzy concept with little recognition for its benefits. Think of Celine Dion, who with a voice coach claimed world fame. Her coach unleashed what is known today as one of the most mesmerizing voices in the world. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly: How Do You Change the World? Recently, I saw an exhibition of paintings by a very talented artist. He clearly has a social conscience and his depictions of the pain and misery of disenfranchised and minority people are so vivid and real you can't help but feel the pain in viewing the paintings. Is Coaching For You? More and more people have less and less time, but have greater demands both personally and professionally. This situation has resulted in the emergence of personal coaching within four basic areas: Financial, Physical or Fitness, Life or Career and Executive Performance. What The Buddha Says About Coaches There is a Buddhist saying that goes like this: Success Coaching - What Bill Gates and You Should Have In Common He was just a teenager, but he was already displaying the powerful habits that would one day make him a billionaire. |
