Unexpected Wisdom
If you have ever traveled across country by train, you know that meals are served with community seating. That means you can meet new people with every meal. In late March I took the train home (to Southern California) from an engagement in Massachusetts. One evening my meal companions consisted of a very nice couple and a teenager. At first, the teenager had little to say. (Parents, does this sound familiar?) But through my questions he told us that he was 16, wanted to be an attorney, and could bench press 325 pounds. Then I asked him, "What three recommendations would you give to someone in 8th grade about high school?" Without hesitation he gave an answer that all of us can use. Here are his recommendations, with my comments on how they apply to leaders: 1) Watch who you hang out with. Certainly, your friends define who you are. Leaders know this and thus build organizations that consist of people who reinforce productive work, discourage destructive behavior, and provide a variety of complementary skills. A wise leader will direct a person's development by placing the person with colleagues who have beneficial characteristics. Similarly, this explains why some leaders work with a coach who provides a contrast to their preferred style. You can also manage your personal growth by associating with people who have achieved what you aspire to have. For example, one entrepreneur left a mastermind group of millionaires to join a group of multimillionaires. 2) The next four years are very important. Actually, every "next four years" will have a significant impact on you. Your actions and decisions during that time will determine everything that follows. And the key to making the most of time is having a vision, setting goals, and making plans. Most leaders work with a business plan. And some have a business plan for their career and other important aspects of their life. 3) It can be a lot of fun. Yes, the next four years and the rest of your life can be a lot of fun. If you choose to make it so. My train ride serves as an excellent example of this. When I bought my train ticket I decided that I was going to enjoy the ride. And I can report that I had a ball. In fact, I told everyone that I met on the train that I was the happiest guy on the train. Now, let's be realistic about this. A train offers some challenges. For example, the train rocks from side to side as it rattles along over old track, switches, and rail crossings. The train blows a whistle, which you can hear all day (and night) long. The train provides limited space. I spent the first night in coach, curled up on my seat and the suitcases that I stacked on the floor between my seat and the one in front. My sleeper (for the next two nights) consisted of a 3.25 feet wide, 7 ft. long, 6.5 ft high space. And yet I was the happiest guy on the train. Because I decided to enjoy the ride. Similarly, we can enjoy our ride through life if we decide to enjoy it. IAF Certified Professional Facilitator and author Steve Kaye works with leaders who want to hold effective meeting. Self Improvement and Self Growth Nowadays the terms self-improvement, self-growth and self-help have become popular. We find many books about these subjects and many websites too. It seems that people are turning inside to find the solution to their problems. They seek knowledge, techniques, workshops, lectures and teachers who can show them the way. People begin to understand that self improvement and self growth improve the quality of life. Wayne Dyer - 20 Abundance & Prosperity Quotes Dr. Wayne Dyer has been an inspiration for me for at least two decades now and below I wanted to share with you my favorite 20 quotes of his that relate to creating abundance and prosperity: "There is no scarcity of opportunity to make a living at what you love; there's only scarcity of resolve to make it happen." "Abundance is not something we acquire. It is something we tune into." "There is no way to prosperity, prosperity is the way." "Within you is the divine capacity to manifest and attract all that you need or desire." "We are Divine enough to ask and we are important enough to receive." "You are always a valuable, worthwhile human being, not because anybody says so, not because you're successful, not because you make a lot of money, but because you decide to believe it and for no other reason." "When I chased after money, I never had enough. When I got my life on purpose and focused on giving of myself and everything that arrived into my life, then I was prosperous." "The measure of your life will not be in what you accumulate, but in what you give away." "Successful people make money. It's not that people who make money become successful, but that successful people attract money. They bring success to what they do." "Self-worth comes from one thing -- thinking that you are worthy." "Prosperity in the form of wealth works exactly the same as everything else. You will see it coming into your life when you are unattached to needing it. " "Our intention creates our reality." "Love what you do." "Doing what you love is the cornerstone of having abundance in your life." "It's never crowded along the extra mile." "I will grow. I will become something new and grand, but no grander than I now am. Just as the sky will be different in a few hours, its present perfection and completeness is not deficient, so am I presently perfect and not deficient because I will be different tomorrow. I will grow and I am not deficient." "Heaven on Earth is a choice you must make, not a place we must find." "A non-doer is very often a critic-that is, someone who sits back and watches doers, and then waxes philosophically about how the doers are doing. It's easy to be a critic, but being a doer requires effort, risk, and change." "Anything that has been accomplished by any other human being in the physical realm is within the field of possibility." "Anything you really want, you can attain, if you really go after it." Universal Law Series - the Law of Cause & Effect This is the third of seven articles in our continuing series on Universal Law. The focus of this article is the Law of Cause & Effect. Based on the Socratic law of causality, this Law is so profound and powerful that it has been referred to as the "Iron Law of Human Destiny". Be Grateful for Gratitude In Twelve Step meetings, it's traditional to groan when someone says, "Let's have a gratitude meeting." People don't like to talk or think about what they're grateful for. It's not in our nature. We're more tuned to what's going wrong than what's going right. We can't help it. The cave men who sat around and admired how white the teeth on the saber toothed tiger were, didn't last long enough to reproduce. The ones who realized those teeth were a bad thing are our ancestors, so to speak. How Do You Treat Others? When others are angry with you, loving to you, critical of you, and so on, do you treat them the same? We tend to treat others, except those in a position of authority or power over us, the same way they treat us. Aspirations Worth Their Weight in Platinum "To succeed, planning alone is insufficient. One must improve as well." - Isaac Asimov What Do You Do? When I go out and talk to business people, I hear them talking about all the things they do from day to day. They talk about the problems they have and their frustrations with a whole variety of things they do. Invariably I find myself thinking: why do they do these things in the first place. As an extreme example, if you had your hand in a flame and it was burning, you would move it wouldn't you? So why not do something about the things that cause you stress and frustrate you? Creating Relationship Synergy through Rapport Building One of the great things about rapport is that it doesn't matter whether you have agreement or not with the other party. Remember some of the conversations you've had in the past with your best friend, partner or even children. Do you always agree with them? What happens when you disagree? Is it the end of the world or is there friendly banter? Sometimes we simply agree to disagree. I heard someone say once "You can either be right, or you can be happy". I know I'd rather be happy. You can also build relationships with others although you personally don't get along. I've had jobs in the past where I personally didn't get along with my bosses for whatever reason, however I still respected their position ? they were still my boss, they were running the show and for all intents and purposes knew what they were doing. With that, my professional integrity remained intact. Are You Irresistibly Attractive? If you've done any reading on the subject of marketing, you've certainly heard the term "Unique Selling Proposition" or "USP." The Modern Geek - Changing the Stereotype The day of duck-taped glasses, suspenders and pocket-protectors are quickly fading away. It's getting harder to pick the geeks out of the crowd. Other Peoples Opinions In a society where interaction is part of everyday life, and other people form a vital part of life, other people's opinions are actually important in where we fit into society. However, we often think we know what other people are thinking and base our actions around those 'apparent' opinions. 6 Great Ways To Improve Your Social Skills If you are looking for a way to improve your social skills, there are many resources available that will assist you in refining your social skills and improving the way you communicate with others. Mirror, Mirror The Concept of Beauty How To Bypass Your Conscious Mind and Program Yourself For Success Emile Coué, the French psychotherapist once said: "When theimagination and will power are in conflict, are antagonistic, itis always the imagination which wins, without any exception."Then you can program yourself for success by understanding thepower of imagination. To Be A Cut Above The Rest! Mannerisms and personality traits go a long way in making impressions on other people. Some people unknowingly have mannerisms, which humor others. Some people have mannerisms, which obviously show that they are tense - wiping their face with a handkerchief or nervously twiddling their thumbs or even a lot of stammering when they talk. The ?Stand-Out? Principle Think for a moment about all the people you know that Stand Out from their peers. Looking to Where the Grass is Greener? I've written this article specifically for individuals contemplating change with the idea of making things better, brighter and different. This change could be anything from relationship/s, career, to relocating somewhere else (having a sea change is an example). It could also be in the form of personal development through attending courses, reading and networking. The Path of Appreciation Without appreciation, any success you have will be in vain and worthless. Yes, you would have accomplished your goals but it would be an empty win. Turn Whats Bothering You Into A Blessing That which you desire to remove from your life is a blessing that you haven't yet learned to appreciate. For life does not send misfortune upon you it sends you only love. Just because you cannot see the gift doesn't mean the gift is not there. Whats in a Name ? What's In a Name? |
